Super Mario Sunshine. The Hub-world was actually fun to explore, the stages were fantastic, and FLUDD was a wonderful addition to the series, and removed all the cheap deaths that were plentiful in SM64(it baffles me that someone could tolerate SM64, yet they can't seem to get the FLUDD controls down, which I've honestly never had any problems with at all). In fact, it honestly felt like an improvement over Super Mario 64 in pretty much every way! Especially the story, which was a real nice change of pace over the usual Mario fare.

Super Mario Galaxy was pretty fun, too, but a bit too linear for my tastes.

And in case you haven't noticed already, I really, really didn't like Super Mario 64. The levels were poorly designed, the controls were awful, and the camera lead to cheap deaths galore. I had to force myself to finish it, and I cussed at it the whole way through.

I have to say I think it's good that super mario galaxy is linear, because it's like the old mario games implemented in 3d! In a way. But that'll change in SMG2 which is always good!

Agree with everything said.

...except even the 2D Mario games included way more exploration than Super Mario Galaxy did. Hidden passages, hidden power ups, and even ways to skip whole levels entirely! Honestly, I think I time out looking for everything more often than I actually die.

Super Mario Galaxy was a fun game for sure, but once I get all the stars, I'll probably never bother going back to it again(if I can get myself to go back to it enough to get all the stars, anyways )

Galaxy was the BEST! Then Sunshine comes in second, then 64/64DS. Galaxy 2 is going to be better than all of them combined though.

So far it's tie between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy (I enjoyed Sunshine to but these two game just takes the cake), but for what I've seen Super Mario Galaxy 2 might take this spot as the best 3D Mario Game.

I'll admit the controls were okay, but the spin jump rarely worked. You'd often go in the wrong direction and not make it to where you wanted to go. The spin jump made one level, containing a yoshi and a lot of evil platforms, just plain stupid.

I could do it just fine. That level didn't require the spin jump, and that level was stupid anyway. It took me months to beat it!

I think that level is called Yoshi's Fruit Adventure, one of the harder and more awkward stars on Sunshine. It doesn't take months to beat it though, hours would be closer to the spot.

I actually stopped playing Sunshine for a bit after I got that star, and played Wind Waker for a while...

On the 3D Mario games, I'd say 64, Galaxy, Sunshine.

He never said 3d mario platformers... But I'll assume that is what you meant, and my pick is Galaxy. Then Sunshine, and finally 64.

I didn't like FLUDD, it just doesn't fit well into the Mario universe (unlike the cool new Penguin Suit!) & felt very gimmicky to me. The best bits of Sunshine for me were the non FLUDD sections, which gave a style of level that sometimes appeared in Galaxy. Yoshi vomiting as if he was terminally ill didn't do it for me either. Shame as there were some well designed levels, in particular I liked Noki Bay.

Bowser Junior makes the Koopa Kids look like f***ing Shaft.

I preferred 64 to Galaxy. Galaxy is great, but too many times there was just one way of completing the level.

That's the least true thing any human has ever said. Well done!

Maybe the camera is a bit off, maybe the controls are not the best (although I find it tends to be people confusing their inability to play the game, with the game having poor controls), but bad level design? No. Just no.

If Super Mario 64 has poor level design, then by default, all 3D platform games have poor level design.

If Super Mario 64 has poor level design, then what word shall we use to describe the level design in Sonic Unleashed? We will, my friends, have to invent a new word.

1) Galaxy
2) Mario 64
Haven't played Sunshine or 64DS, so they don't get ranked. Galaxy just expanded on Mario 64 and was awesome. I would say 64 is a better game for it's time though.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I thought each game had something going for it... and a lot wrong. I'll do something different for once and just say what I thought they did right rather than being negative.

SM64: Easily the most fun to run and jump around in like it's a playground. The hub world is fun and colorful. Wing cap Mario's flyest flying item. The Bowser levels are awesome and exactly how I imagined Mario in 3D.

Sunshine: The hub may not be as cool as the castle, but once you have Yoshi it's a lot of fun, and the blue coins are fun to find. The abstract, FLUDDless levels seem like to progress from the vision seen in the SM64's Bowser levels represent the best 3D platforming I've yet to experience.

Galaxy: You can run around planets. I could probably name one or two more things, but I'll have to think about it.

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

Super Mario 64 is the best.

I have all the stars for both Mario and Luigi in Galaxy. I've seen it all, and yet I don't see what makes it special. I found SM64 and Sunshine to both be more interesting, I lost interest with Galaxy and pretty much just played through it to see if it got better. None of the worlds seemed particularly memorable, the camera annoyed me a bit, the new power-ups may as well have not even been there, and nothing with Luigi was any harder, despite claims that some of Luigi's challenges were "impossible", and actually seemed easier having played through the entire game as Mario. :/

Super Mario 64 still wows me, it's hub is unforgettable and just plain awesome, every world is astounding and varied, it's the freakin' king. I'll say right here, Sunshine is hardly a close second by any means, to me they're completely in a different league.

1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario Galaxy

Am I the only one who had no problems with the controls on Super Mario 64 DS or the camera in Sunshine? I was actually surprised at people bashing the camera when I first heard the complaints.

Actually, Kid_A, you're not alone. I thought the controls in Super Mario 64 DS, even without analog, was quite exceptional.

While I don't think the level designs in SM64 are bad by any means, they do seem weak in comparison to the outstanding level design in Sunshine and especially Galaxy.

I actually thought it was an improvement over the original in every way, tbh. The new levels they added were fantastic, and having different Characters with different abilities made for some pretty cool puzzles and head-scratchers. Visually the game still tops anything on the DS and the N64.
