Or, you know, Nintendo could just make a new platforming series or finally make a 2D Mario game with a level editor included - something that should've happened ages ago, quite frankly.
That's never going to happen. Sony owns Media Molecule, the developer of LBP. Even then, they wouldn't loan a franchise or allow a franchise owned by them to be purchased by a rival company.

Buy? I don't think Nintendo is thinking on buying (it wouldn't make much sense anyways) and I don't think Sony has any thoughts on selling the series. It's best not to think about it. Especially because LBP, and Uncharted are the 2 games Sony does right.

Why on earth do so many people want a level editor in a normal mario game? Mario kart or MVDK I can understand, but why a simple game like SMB?

To extend replayability, mostly. It'd be a simple way to keep players interested in the game, and I can't imagine it being too complicated.
I think there's a good reason why we haven't seen it though. The New Super Mario Bros. games have the exact same physics. If a level editor was in there, players could simply copy levels from the previous entries, getting rid of any incentive to buy the DS, Wii and 3DS versions.

I don't think LBP would really fit onto any Nintendo platform, either technically (Wii U would probably work, but who knows) or in ideology.
People take a quick look at LBP and say it's a platform game. It's not. LBP is a tool. An incredibly powerful too. The things talented people can create with that tool are amazing. Sadly, most people aren't that talented in that department (or don't have the patience to put the time in to improve) and the platform game that comes bundled with the creator is pretty average. This means that LBP is a fantastic tech demo, but it just doesn't really have mass market appeal and that is why Nintendo wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Sure. Put that in my suggestions box. I'll be sure not to look at it.
