Let me just say this. If you guys had played those games when they first came out, you'd definitely understand. But since you're high-schoolers trying to play classics, then its out of context. And you can't just play half of "Ocarina of Time" or half of "FF7" and then say its overrated, or even half of "Super Mario 64". These games that you guys are listing -- sure maybe it doesn't appeal to you now, but these games are the classics of gaming and they affected generations of gamers just like your Pokemon cards affected you.

Super Smash Brothers : Environments blah blah blah, 'deep' blah, blah blah, multiplayer blahblah. No it isn't. It's a very pretty 2D beat em up with no real reward for actually learning to play the damn thing. I unlocked a shedload of stuff on it through button mashing. At no time time did I feel like I'd actually earnt any reward.

Timesplitters 2 : stylised looking but still bog-standard FPS. This is a genre that just hasn't moved on since Doom 2.

Halo - I feel that the people that think this series is the greatest never played a FPS before Halo, it's just like people that started on Final Fantasy 7, they think it's the greatest RPG ever because it's their 1st.

Resident Evil 4 - This should not have been called Resident Evil. They took out everything that made Resident Evil fun. Zombies, gone. T Virus, Gone. Umbrella, Gone. Not saying this is a bad game, maybe i would have liked it better if it had been named something else.

Viewtiful Joe - I bought this game because of all the critical praise for this game & found it very laking in fun.

Sin & Punishment - I bought this on the VC because of all the hype about it. I wish I had spent that money on something else. I still haven't played stage 2 yet.

Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.

Halo- Single player was terrible although I did like split-screen multiplayer with friends and family. Online just ruined it when you've got at least 50 pre-pubescent boys screaming about how they "pwnd" you.
Final Fantasy- I've played nearly every single one and I have not been able to get into it. Same for most RPG's. I just don't like them.
Gears of War- Same as Halo except it felt like the developers were trying to overcompensate for something with the amount of machismo they tried to put into it.
Goldeneye- Great story but those controls Shudder
Super Smash Brothers Brawl- The original and Melee were great and Brawl had some good points but the new levels and rosters of characters just detracted from the "Attack everyone" feel the others had.

Allways praised as the "spiritual sequel to Ocarina of Time" and "maybe the best Zelda game ever". I thought it was one of the worst Zelda's I ever played.

Not long ago, I could've listed a lot of games, but now I've managed to wittle it down to just Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Kid Icarus, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Valkyrie Profile, Kingdom Hearts 2, Golden Sun, and...I'm trying hard not to list any Tales games, since I hate those games in general.

Whoops, I almost forgot: every game made by Rare, except for Star Fox Adventure and Donkey Kong 64. Those games were awesome. But the others...meh.

Oh, and I guess The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Worst. Zelda game. Ever.

I agree with WaltzElf (#18). Good said, short and concise. Other than that I can only say that every game is overrated and worthless except for the ones I like.

Oh and I forgot about the Sonic series except for Sonic Rush. Also I reckon Sonic Heroes was underrated. Not the topic but it needed to be said.

Uh, Ramandus, I have no idea who you are assuming to be a high schooler, but you shouldn't make assumptions here. I hope I'm not part of that assumption because I've played all the games you've listed on their release dates except FF7, which I at least watched someone play during the PS1 era, and was not impressed at all. I completed Ocarina and Mario multiple times.

@Adam - you basically stopped before the game started....7 starts a LOT slower than the rest of the games in the series--I'd give it a chance until you get out of Midgar--it really takes until about halfway through the first disc for most of the systems to truly hit their stride--some aren't even unveiled til the second disc. It's really quite an awesome game when you invest some time in it. But yeah--it isn't the end-all RPG.

Well, that's FF7's problem if it takes over an hour to get started. Everything is way, way too slow: battles, moving around the world, cut scenes. And the game just isn't interesting enough to overcome this.

I don't know that I'd call that an improvement, but it was different. Feeling lost was key to the mood of the first game. Metroid II was more problematic, and not because of the game design but the system. Without color there was no way to tell one area from the next much of the time. I give that game all the kudos I can for introducing the spider ball and having the scariest mood of any Metroid game with all those Metroid bosses scattered about randomly, but the lack of color just makes it too hard in a not-fun way. My only unfinished 2D Metroid.

Anythng Starfox. Get rid of that series already, they don't know what to do with it.

Halo series- I'm not saying that the games are bad, I just don't get why people think it is so amazing.
Call of Duty series- It doesn't deserve the scores it gets, even though the games are fun.
Ocarina of Time- I just don't see why it is so great, it isn't bad, but the best ever?
3D Sonic's, and they don't even score very well....... 2D Sonic's deserve ever bit of praise they get.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

This from a man who then goes on to say Goldeneye is overrated.

It improved on the earlier metroids by making it much easier to find your way around. I'd much prefer super metroid to any zelda game.

Hmm. The 'earlier Metroids' consist of 1 console game, Metroid, on the NES, which was clunky, bland, and only really a genuine classic if you have rose-tinted glasses on, and a GameBoy game. And anyway, are you saying A Link To The Past didn't improve on the previous Zeldas?

And you may prefer Super Metroid to any Zelda, but, overall, the Zelda series is generally held in higher regard... not by everyone, but generally.

Did you play through the whole game? I think all the exploration, action, and platforming elements come together perfectly. Obviously not everyone likes the same things though.

No I didn't play through the whole game, it wasn't good enough to hold my attention, and I've tried several times, more than a decade apart. I've played all of Prime, several times.

goldeneye - lots of fun but pretty clunky controls and aiming plus single player is just ok. multiplayer is lots of fun despite faults but I actually think the timesplitters games are actually better made. definitely not bad but when people talk about it likes its the best fps ever made thats going a bit far.

This is all wrong, but each to his own. Clunky is my word for having a go at great games, get your own! TimeSplitters 2 on the GameCube was good though.

No idea who you are referring to, but I'm 28, and have formed my opinions over many a year of console gaming. I can remember when this place was all fields.

More or less all Zelda and Mario games. Not the same as they're saying they're bad.

Honestly, you can say ANY game that is hugely popular is overrated because of the hype that follows it.
Let's take the Halo serie for an example. Many of the poeple that say Halo, for example, have never played it. They just say it because of the hype surrounding the series. The Halo games are actually quite good, especially in multiplayer but nothing can live up to what it has been built into.

Its safe to assume that I don't think you're a highschooler. Yeah, thanks for thinking that I wrote that post just for you Mr Adam.

What was slow about FF7 was the battle 3D animation thing. I think at the time, they wanted to milk out the 3D effects since the previous FFs were 2D. I've only played less than half of this game myself, but I don't think its overrated considering its probably the only FF with an edge to it and it has the widest appeal.

Uh, I said "I have no idea who you are assuming to be a high schooler" -- never assumed it was me. Trin and I are the only ones to mention the games you listed, except for one person who listed FF7, before your comment. So either you're addressing one of us or everyone... and we're included in everyone. Or you're addressing someone who didn't respond, I guess? Just sounded a bit condescending to me, no big deal. Maybe you meant to say "if" instead of "since" in the sentence I originally quoted?

Anywho, more importantly, about FF7... Even if the rest of the game is amazing, a good game doesn't drag on tediously for hours before getting started up. By the way, it's weird that you're now admitting to playing less than half of it yourself, after saying that playing only half of a game invalidates one's opinion. I think if a game is so slow that you don't have the urge to play on past the halfway point then your opinion is informed enough.

No way. I played Super Metroid for the first time (and immediately, the second time thereafter) only a couple months ago. And it was easily one of the best games I've ever played.
