Depends on the content. My dad plays games and keeps track of what content is in them, so I can play some (Halo, Half-Life, Bioshock, Gears of War) and not play others (GTA, No More Heroes, Madworld.)

Ya, i've been able to play m-games since I played a video game at age 5(even though the first one I had was RE4 which i got when I was 12). But now I'm 18 so it doesn't matter.
I've been old enough to play M-rated games since 2008, but I'm not really interested in M-rated games. The one M-rated game I do own, which I've had since Christmas of '04, is Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for the GameCube. I didn't play the two Mortal Kombat games and Primal Rage in the compilation until years later; the latter was bad, and the former two, while better than the latter, I admit I don't like much. I do love the arcade game Timber. @FaxanaduGuy - really? I've been allowed to play T-rated games a few years before I became a teen in early '04. Unless you're joking.
I've been playing M Rated games since I was 7 or 8. I don't see what the big deal is. They're not nearly as bad as R-Rated movies, and I've been watching those since I was 6.
My first M game that I ever played was Perfect Dark when I was 5, and since then I've played a lot more. My parents don't really care about it that much, except for my mom did't want me to play GTA when I was younger. She eventually stopped, though, because when I was around 10 I could play pretty much any game I wanted. They didn't really care about R rated movies either, my parents have been letting me see whatever movies they do for most of my life.
When I was younger, there was no such thing as ratings for games, so it's never really mattered. If my parents knew anything about video games, they certainly wouldn't have let me play some of the games I did. As it was, they never wanted me to play Mortal Kombat, Doom, or Kiler Instinct, so they at least knew that much. Now, I play games ten times more "mature" than those (Madworld and No More Heroes, for instance) and my parents are oblivious, though they certainly wouldn't approve if they knew about it.
And you've never had nightmares at that age, Mickey?
Of course I did. Jurassic Park made me think I had Dinosaurs under my bed, Chuckie had me terrified of my own toys for weeks, and to this day I still feel like zombies are gonna burst through my window, Aliens are gonna abduct me, Count Dracula's gonna suck out all my blood, and Frankenstien's gonna come in to finish the job...but that's more due to my overactive imagination than anything else. Although I don't think I ever got legitimate nightmares from a game before. The closest thing I can think of is when I finished Halo 2 and I kept seeing the freakin' Gorilla things charging at me every time I closed my eyes, but that's more like flashbacks than nightmares.

Sounds great. I wish that would happen to me... actually one time I went to bed and I dremt that I was in RE5, and other such games like Dead Space, and they're not scary, but when I get hurt in the dream, I feel it so they're not so pleasant. When I wake up I'm fine.e
I think it's the possibility that it could affect your moral and social development that might worry them. You're still learning the things that you need to to become a well adjusted, (and hopefully) responsible and caring person once you're out of the house. You may not see what all the fuss is, but what you're exposed to can have an influence on you (Good or bad). So I think it's wise that they're watching what they allow you to be exposed to. I think more parents should pay more attention to what their kids are doing and think about how the things they're exposed to may possibly affect them. Though I don't think they need to go overboard like the preacher in that movie footloose.
