Better question is will I ever buy DSiWare games, and the answer is no, likely not.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I want to buy more DSiware, but I'm afraid that Nintendo will have the service available on 3DS. I think Nintendo will have it where you have to rebuy games you already own just to tout full backwards compatibility. It will be like the PSP UMD fiasco all over again.

I'm hesitant. I was going to buy some more Nintendo points the other day because I saw a good deal, but then I changed my mind when I thought about my games being tied to my DSi. I probably won't buy any more DSiWare titles than it takes to use up my existing points, and I'll probably just go for 200-point downloads, since those are the ones I'm least likely to care about being able to transfer to my 3DS and they're a good way to earn Club Nintendo coins.

Drexeger - Because then they can make more money. If they launch the 3DS's shop with the entire DSiWare library, not only can they have a great variety of quality titles to lure consumers who never picked up a DSi into wasting more money, they can focus on making better downloadable 3DS titles without having loads of people complaining "there's nothing good on 3DSWare!!!"

Brandonbwii - I don't feel Nintendo's stupid enough not to have seen what happened with the PSPGo UMD thing and would be willing to repeat history.

Exactly.

I don't see the problem.

First off, the two systems are completely different, not a straight upgrade the way some seem to think. If you want to sell your DSi towards the 3DS, then so be it, but it's already clear based on the specs that the 3DS will not be an optimal system on which to play original DS games. The screens are higher res, so you'll have black borders like you do when playing GBA games on a DS, but even worse in the case of the lower screen (which is actually a bit smaller to begin with). The D-pad is also placed somewhat oddly, and it's doubtful that the system will be as portable, given the extra tech shoved in; at least in the case of the E3 prototypes, they were noticeably thicker than a DSi.

But forgetting all that, I don't understand the obsession with keeping your small, downloadable games permanently. These games are limited in scope, and meant to be played, finished, and then moved off the system to make room for something new. That's their appeal, actually; bite-sized, cheaper games ranging from the price of a coffee to a sandwich, that you can consume and then delete without feeling like you wasted any investment. Of all the DSiWare games I've delete after finishing, I know for certain that I will never have the slightest temptation to reinstall any of them.

There are a few DSiWare games that I always keep on the system (Electroplankton, Flipnote, etc), and so long as I still want to play these and still want to have the ideal system for playing my regular DS games, I'll keep the DSi. If that changes, I'll sell it. The 3DS is something completely different.

Apparently, I'm one of the few that doesn't have any interest at all in the 3DS. For me, the 3DS screen is too small (as are the DS lite and DS screens). Which is why I waited until the XL came out before I even replaced my old GameBoy Advance!! Since my eyes aren't the greatest anymore, I really need the larger screen. Therefore, the 3DS will NOT affect my DSWare purchases.

Well actually I will buy only the best games and time to time, so 5000 points per what 2 months? I'm actually going to sell some gameboy and gamecube games I have so to save more money and will buy less DS and Wii games.

I just want to point out that there's no indication that XBLA and PSN games will be transferrable to Sony and MS' next system as it depends on whether they're backwards compatible. If they use different architectures then the games may not be transferrable and emulation doesn't always work(hence why not all Xbox games work on the 360).

Being able to transfer in the same gen should be right, and that's where Nintendo messed up, but transferring between gens shouldn't be expected as it's quite hard to pull off. I suppose it's one area where the PC and Steam have the advantage.

Are we even sure DSiWare will be purchasable on a 3DS? They may render the whole argument moot by saying DSi runs DSiWare, 3DS runs 3DSWare.

I don't plan on adding any more points on my DSi. I used the free 1000 points for getting the DSi online in time, and the only game that has a chance of getting me to charge up more points is Shantae.

I will buy games at the same pace, I don't think I will replace my DSi in a long time (if only it could transfer purchases to a XL...).
3DS seems really good, but we don't have prices, dates, etc... I'm sticking with my handheld for now

Now Playing: TLOZ OoT 3D, 3D Classic: Kirby Adventure, TLOZ: Skyward Sword, Pushmo
Will Buy: Zengage, Mario Kart 7, Marrio Picross, Mighty Switch Force
Waiting For: Resident Evil Revelations, VVVVV, Sakura Samurai, NightSky, Colors! 3D

I believe 3DS is going to be a great machine with great games. No doubt about it. However, the games I like to play doesn't need that machine, my DS or DSi XL are more than perfect for them.
Maybe I'm way too innocent but, maybe, there's going to be a long period of peacefull coexistence between DS and 3DS. My reasons:

  • Public: 3DS core, DS casual (style of games preferred)
  • Price (hardware): 3DS expensive (new release), DSi 1/3 original price (sales)
  • Price (software): 3DS super production games - increase final price, DSi good ideas - smaller productions.

Because of these differences, I foresee other kind of software (courses, appl.....) arriving to the DSi.
Time will tell, but it is a nice possibility.

Unfortunately it's a bit like gba micro living with ds, it didn't last long.

But I say that they could co exist for another while but once they have making 3ds games down and thhey can use previous models, landscapes, etc and change them a bit for a sequel and the price goes down we should all have a funersl for the ds given what great games it gave us. R.I.P in about three years advance

Even after I get a 3DS, I think I will keep my DSi. I just sent it in for repairs today, so when I get that back in a week or two (I had a pixel issue on my top screen), I will probably download a few DSiWare titles. I have my eye on X-Scape and AiRace.

Thats right!

Thats really right. But no. Not AS MUCH DSiWare. I will occasionally get the MUST BUYS, but not as much as I used to buy.
