I think the 3DS will be more successful than the DSi, even if people decide not to play it in 3D, just because there's so much in development for it at the moment. As a DSi owner I feel let down that there were barely any big DSiWare releases and no major retail releases that made owning the system worthwhile over just having a DS, although there were a number of great little DSiWare games that were very decent for the price.

i don't see why the clocks get so much hate. yeah, they're not really games, the system comes with a built-in clock, yadda yadda, but i've been using the Mario Clock almost every single night for over a year now. i can have multiple alarms set if i want, change what music i wake up to, and if i want to mess around for a few minutes there's the little running-mario minigame on the top screen. there's nothing wrong with wanting something with a little more functionality than what came pre-installed, and i'd say i've gotten my 200 points' worth out of it for srs.

Right on. I've used it while traveling, and it's wonderful to have the perpetual, sleep-inducing Mario game at the top, then waking to 8-bit music. I've bought sodas for almost $2, and not one of them gave me the same joy.

If Cave Story was the only game on it, then it would still be the best DLC service that focuses on games (and clocks) available
I added the '(and clocks)' part so I win

Just to let you know, I got both the clock and the caculator and I use them both on a DAILY BASIS. If it were not for them my life would be a complete mess.

It seems there hasn't been as much to get excited about, but it doesn't surprise me people would turn attention to developing for the 3DS, and I wouldn't single out DSiWare. WiiWare seems to have had fewer releases than usual in recent weeks, although it's not so noticeable because we've been getting demos.

@slidecage: Give it time, my friend, give it time.... People will adjust to whatever negative points you can think of at the moment.

On topic, I'm all in all quite satisfied with DSiWare, just because there hasn't been anything of interest lately doesn't mean there's nothing you may have missed or that there's nothing good to buy period. There's some quality stuff on the service, you just have to know what it is.

Very true indeed. I hope at some point Nintendo take the shortcomings of their DSiWare service on board and make major improvements for the 3DS store (I know it is going to be better, but there is a lot of work to be done).

For me, the major improvements needed to really push DSi/Wii/3DS Ware are:
Demos. An absolute must.

More developer friendly update system. A developer should be able to add new levels without a huge re-submission process and without having to get the game rated again (new gameplay features (code) with this level of simplicity would also be nice)

Drop ESRB, PEGI, USK, OFLC altogether for downloads. They aren't necessary or legally required, Nintendo have simply signed up for them. They should let their internal QA teams rate the games based on their own sets of rules. This would reduce dev costs and make it easier to put all games in all territories. Apple do this, so Nintendo can.

Don't force support for all languages, let the developer choose. Again, this reduces dev costs, but at the cost of losing sales to certain territories. With a more flexible update system, though, languages could be added using the profits from the initial releases.

Finally, the store needs to be more fluid, more responsive, easier to browse and a lot bloody faster. Why they can't have a setup where it loads the icons for about 20-30 games onto the bottom screen and displays the info for the currently highlighted game on the top screen, I don't know. It also needs to display info and let the user interact with it whilst still caching data for the rest of the page, prioritising which data is needed first based on what the user is doing, like the PS3's online store does.

Oh, and some sort of customer ratings for games too. If you've bought it, you can rate it.

Currently they collect customer ratings through club nintendo, will be interesting to see if 3DS does anything different for ratings.

can the DSI play gameboy games when the 3ds download shop opens or just the 3ds can download those games

slidecage

iphys

Just the 3DS as far as we've heard, although way back before the 3DS they were suggesting the DSi was going to get a virtual handheld, so that was kind of misleading for DSi owners if they then only make it available on the 3DS.

Man, I don't know if I'm just getting old or what, but I swear society as a whole is getting more and more impatient to the point that it's a little scary. People complain about the 3DS launch lineup as if they weren't planning on owning the system for more than a month at most, and the way people complain about the games released on DSiWare, it's like they're expecting the most amazing game ever made to be released on a weekly basis. Yes, I understand that there's a lot of crap released on the service... but if there actually was some new amazing game that's totally worth the money released on a weekly basis, what kind of a terrible person would actually have the money to download them and the time to play them week after week??? If I had that kind of money and free time I'd probably find something better to do with my life. Isn't it enough to pick a few games that you really like, and just enjoy the crap out of them until your DSi breaks? Personally I love the Art Style series, and even though I've found other games on DSiWare that I like, I can't imagine ever being "done" with the Art Style games. I'd like to see more quality content released on DSiWare, but I have to be honest with myself and admit that I probably won't spend the time or money to try out new games. That's why I love this site... there are still a ton of games that I haven't downloaded yet but would love to, and hearing that other people out there love them only makes them all the more appealing. But hearing people complain all the time about how there aren't enough new games coming out week after week that THEY personally don't find satisfying gets old really fast.

Okay I'm done now sorry about that go about your business now THE END. Damnit, I think I am getting old.

@kurtasbestos: I agree with you (and I'm old). I like to download games and play cartridge games from time to time but, with the time I have, I will be 60 (I turn 33 this Sunday) before I exhaust the GBA/DS/DSiWare library of quality games to play. I don't plan on upgrading to a 3DS for a long time (probably only for Virtual Handheld and 3DSWare) and don't really understand how people have enough time such that they exhaust all the good games. Maybe the folks who complain about DSiWare just don't like puzzle games, because if you are a puzzle or tower defense gamer then DSiWare is your dream come true. I guess if you only play RPGs then I could see some dissatisfaction but no one should expect downloadable platforms to contain quality, epic RPGs at this point.
