Nintendo will just have to figure out how to make a profit in a more contracted market. 50 million handhelds still isn't a bad figure, and as long as selling dedicated handheld gaming consoles is profitable, they'll stick to it.

Unless they do something to dramatically increase sales, its looking like its going to be Nintendo's worst selling handheld ever. I think with the rise in smartphone gaming, a lot of people who used to casually play on Nintendo's handhelds aren't coming back. They'll still most likely end in the60-80 million install base mark, and if they ever created a game franchise that could reach mass market appeal like Pokemon, Nintendogs or Brain Age then we might see things improve.
They are also releasing yearly updates and special designs for the 3ds to try to entice current 3ds owners to upgrade to a new model. And its worked. I started off with a regular 3ds, upgraded to an XL, and I'm planning on buying a "new" 3ds when it comes out.

So sad, I'm the same way, 3DS - 3DS XL - New 3DS XL, Nintendo is playing us like a fiddle.
I'd bet money it'll do better than the GBA, especially because of time difference. They've had a lack of MAJOR titles so far this year, and its still outselling everything every week except PS4 for gaming systems.

Smash in October and Pokemon in November should give a significant boost, but yeah, a pretty slow year in comparison to 2013, although I would argue 2012 was worse off than 2014. Sticker Star being the AAA holiday title, ugh.......New 3DS will prob launch in Feb-April 2015 timeframe.
Because when you're a Nintendo fan, you have to be 100% invested in their business practice as well.

Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
It's North America that's bringing the 3DS down. In Japan the GBA and 3DS both sold about 16 million units, in NA, the GBA sold 40 million, and the 3DS sold 13 million.
If Super Mario 3D Land was never made, it would've met the same fate as the Virtual Boy. Just guessing.
That I disagree with though if you replace Super Mario 3D Land with Mario Kart 7 then my opinion is different. Mario Kart has almost always been more important than the Mario platformers with increasing hardware sales. To be honest, I think if Mario Kart 8 was a (near) Wii U launch title and looked exactly how it did in its 2014 release then the Wii U situation wouldn't have been negative at all.
worst nintendo handheld in terms of sales (and other things lol) was the virtual boy. i dont think they will ever "beat" that.
they made a lot of money with the 3DS. it is by far the best seeling handheld this gen. vita is dead but it didnt look like that from the start. when sony announced that vita will cost the same on launch as the 3DS it could have gone in a very different direction too.
nintendo already said they want to make apps for smartphones that will pull people to buy their systems to get the full nintendo gaming experience. i think that will work. but they will probably never reach the sales of gameboy and DS again
