This. Why anyone of you care is beyond me.

Simple as that, at least that's why I'm interested in the happenings around Ninty.

Currently on the plate:
Mount and Blade: Warband – Napoleonic Wars
Chivalry
Super Mario 3D World – Finishing the last few levels.
Mario Kart 8

Western companies don't care about handhelds and Japan already supports it well, making your points moot

Worst selling is relative, but it'll be good flame bait by jerks wanting to slam Nintendo. Worst selling is nothing, worst profiting is everything. The DS didn't have to tolerate the Apple/Android tablet/phone crowd, and before that with GBA and before you didn't even have that as a question, just oveprriced color battery eating handhelds and LCD games.

40-50 million is not bad, it will go on to get to at least 80 million by the end of its lifespan. You should be asking this for Wii U, there's more cause for worry there than on Nintendo handhelds. They'll follow it with another product like they (and everyone else) usually do.

I don't think it's going to stop at 40 million......................the 3DS will probably eclipse 50 million this Christmas with the new Smash and Pokémon titles, add on to that, the "new 3DS", and as a whole, the lineage will probably end up selling around 60~80 million, depending on it's lifespan.

50 million as a worse case scenario isn't exactly cause for concern. Things probably could be better but they can certainly be much worse. The 3DS still has some legs with the new revision coming out, more limited editions, and more big titles (at least one more mainline Pokemon game) so it can still touch that respectable range of typical Nintendo handhelds before it's all said and done.

I'm honestly not sure what Ninty could possibly do to reach DS numbers again. The 3DS is cheap, has a top notch library and comes in all these appealing variations. The Vita is a superb multimedia device, has some AAA titles, and great Japanese developer support but sells even worse. What exactly is that magic formula to get those DS/PSP era numbers again? Is it even possible when the market has changed so much?

Virtual Boy is really in its own category considering it had less than a year on the shelf and was not released worldwide. So not really a "generational" handheld like the 3DS most certainly is, as well as all other Nintendo handhelds were. So as a "generational" Nintendo device, it will be interesting to see where it lands and if it falls behind GBA numbers, what might come next for the handheld line.

Not concerned about Wii U as much, as outside of a few Wii-era years, handhelds have mostly been more significant to Nintendo's revenues in software and hardware.

Then no one will care, because it'll still be successful, especially for today's gaming market (where far worse numbers are often the norm).

It won't really mean anything. Not like the Wii U's failures.
