I don't see a reason for Nintendo to refresh the generation anytime soon. They just released a new version, bolstering the 3DS' graphical & technical capabilities. Since each consecutive handheld sells less and less due to smart phones I imagine they'll try to keep making games for the current 3DS' as long as possible. 2017 seems too early, at least to me.
Considering how both the 3DS and Wii U have been underselling (especially the Wii U), they don't want this generation to last longer than it has to. They should take as much time as they need to design the console and work out the bugs, but no longer. They have to make a move soon if they want to become relevant again.
And I know that it seems like the generation has barely begun, but generations only last about 5 or 6 years on average. We're 4 years into this generation. It's time to start thinking about next gen. And look at the game lineup. The 3DS has already exhausted most of its IPs, and the Wii U isn't too far behind. How do you think Nintendo is going to fill 3+ years of games? I can't imagine they have much left up their sleeves for this gen, they probably have one more batch of games left for 8th gen that they're working on for 2016/2017 and then they're moving on to 9th gen.
Interesting comments, everybody. I'm just a bit surprised that some people are paying so much attention to the name instead of to the whole text.
@Spoony_Tech, I also suspect Nintendo might be developing a home console + handheld pack, something similar to the Wii U + GamePad or the PS4 + Vita ideas, but in a much more convenient way, I'm talking about real portable systems and not wireless screens and speakers. As a matter of fact, Nintendo said they are trying to bring together home and handheld hardware and software, somehow.
@OorWullie That is very interesting and makes a lot of sense. Nintendo Portable + Nintendo Home. It is simple, easy and effective. I believe some people here are much better than Nintendo's Marketing team although that is quite easy to achieve. I love your idea.
Here's my wishlist for what the 3DS's successor would be like:
Nintendo Fusion Go
1GB RAM
720p Screen
4.5 inch screen
One, big screen (backwards compatibility with 3DS/DS games would work by having both screens on one large screen)
Colours: Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Yellow, Pink, White and Black
Nintendo Fusion Go XL
2GB RAM
1080p/1440p Screen
5.5 inch screen
One big screen
Colours same as Go
This'll never happen though ;-;
While I don't know about the RAM and resolution I think that if Nintendo decide to go with a fusion portable/home console device they probably will leave the DS branding behind and work with one large touchscreen. The prototype is the 2DS. Teardowns show that it actually only has one screen which is covered by plastic to look like two and the bottom half has the touch sensors applied. Nintendo has already developed the software to split one screen into two and are most likely creating more prototypes based around this concept. I imagine something around the size of the iphone6+ since it along with the Galaxy note have proven consumers are willing to carry a device that size daily. This is all speculation obviously but that's the direction that seems most natural if they want fusion and backwards compatibility. Even 3d could be kept as it seems tech companies like Apple and Samsung have consistently looked into mobile glasses free 3d.
For those who say that iphone6+ or Samsung note size is too small for DS simulation don't forget that it only need be this size when folded in its clamshell state. As seen in Samsung prototypes from2013 foldable screen tech is actively being worked on and a folded single screen could be what allows the fusion to be possible if they can produce it to be sold for under $300.
well according to Rusty I should be able to jump into it. LOL. I hope they lead with an XL size whatever it looks like.

2017 seems likely, but no chance it will be digital only. It will also probably stick with ARM architecture, so backwards compatibility with DS/3DS is a good possibility. Nintendo is already keenly aware that most people don't want to carry around multiple devices on their person, let alone multiple gaming devices. Smartphones can easily run the last decade's worth of software. Nintendo will want their device to at least be able to do the same.

What's wrong with two screens? The more, the better, I say! Heck, make it three screens!
What would be the point? Two screen serves a practical purpose, it allows for menus and touch controls. Three screens though? I can't imagine the benefit. Not to mention that more than two screens would likely lead to some awkward hardware design.

It was more of a joke, really. But I stand by the opinion that two screens are pretty awesome. You can do whatever you need to without blocking the display at all, but you still get that visual input for menus and such.
I would like a better name than 4DS for starters, eew.
I would also want mainline Pokemon games to get back on track and have actual innovation, not one over the other. GameFreak is resistant, so I'll stick a pin in that.

Given Nintendo's current stance on naming stuff, I wouldn't put it past them for the next system to be called 4DS.
Personally, either end the DS name/brand, or come up with a 100% new device.

I'm all for launching it in two sizes like the N3DS, but giving them different specs would be a very, VERY stupid move. It'd mean that they essentially have two separate handhelds to develop for, causing software droughts on both. Also, splitting a 4.5 inch screen in two to play 3DS games? No matter how you cut it, that would be ridiculously small. Imagine having both the top and bottom display of your game having to fit on just the 3DS XL's top screen. Seems tiny, eh? Well that screen is 4.88 if I remember correctly, so it'd be even smaller on the screen you imagine.
A gig of RAM and 720p res seem pretty reasonable, though, plus an SoC that's about on PS360 level but with lower clocks.

They are innovative, XY added quite a bit of game changing features. The problem is the game structure doesn't change, the 8 gyms + evil team + Pokemon League system gets boring after 20 games.

If it has two screens... it's probably gonna be the 4DS.

I'm done trying to explain this
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
I wouldn't be surprised if there's an announcement of a new portable next year and it'll released early 2017, late 2016. The 3DS can't keep going on forever, the New 3DS is basically Nintendo's last dip into consumers pockets before they release a completely new console (a lot like the DSi was). As for the name, I have a feeling they'll drop the DS name, it caused way too much confusion at the beginning of the 3DS' life and it was the same with keeping the Wii name.
It will most likely be dual screen and 3D to keep the backwards compatibility, but probably lose support for the DS. I am kind of expecting the new console to go single screen only and possibly have a pull out touch screen to keep backwards compatibility in place, honestly I think that would be quite nice.
