This piece of news of today here in Nintendo Life https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/01/ocarina_of_time_3d_r... is making me think about the future of Nintendo games. Some people are commenting how 3DS physical games are becoming scarce. Nintendo 4DS (that name is not official, of course, but that's my bet) most probably will be released in 2017 (again, that's my bet). Do you think it will be digital-only? Won't it play 3DS games to save the cartridge slot and a lot of precious space within the machine? I know all Nintendo handhelds have been backwards compatible but do you think that might change? Remember, there's the Virtual Console out there and Nintendo 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld to include it. When I think of Nintendo 3DS games' low physical availability, it's almost impossible to me not to think that physical copies will become like today's special editions, they come in a limited number and only when a game launches.
What do you think?
I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

I don't see a reason for Nintendo to refresh the generation anytime soon. They just released a new version, bolstering the 3DS' graphical & technical capabilities. Since each consecutive handheld sells less and less due to smart phones I imagine they'll try to keep making games for the current 3DS' as long as possible. 2017 seems too early, at least to me.

I don't think so at all. Just look at the dsi and the 3ds came 2 years later. This is a last gasp effort for Nintendo to make some money and hold off till the New system arrives. I fully expect before 2018 hits for something new to come out whether it be a new handheld or combination of console and handheld. Nintendo can't afford to wait longer then that. Just look at the lack of software coming to the 3ds. When they start giving us second games in franchises on one console it means the end is near (Fire Emblem).
As for any new system, I think Nintendo will be the last to go all digital as they know how well at least in NA their games value holds up. I can see both Microsoft and Sony doing this next gen easily but Nintendo still won't for at least the next gen. After that it's anybody's guess.
Whatever it's called it wont be the HDS,at least I hope not.As fitting as that sounds by the time the successor comes along HD will be expected to be included as standard, not as it's main selling point.I think it's safe to say they will drop the DS/Wii name,it'll have had its time by then. After the problems they have had in the current gen they might even go with something as simple as Nintendo Home and Nintendo Portable. It would certainly avoid any confusion and help keep the Nintendo name out there. If they are going to be a lot more connected with each other as expected it would also make sense for them to have a connected name So that's what I think and the more I think about the more I think I like it
I don't see why people are freaking out over OoT 3D no longer being in production when it's nearly four years old at this point. Perfectly normal, and the game itself is still being sold in stores.
Besides, they'll most likely rerelease it like the Nintendo Selects line with the Wii.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)

How is 2017 too early? The 3DS came out in 2011, which means there would be 6 years between the two.
