This has the appearance of Capcom striking out at Inafune by killing all of his pet projects. First Universe, and now Legends 3--two games I was really looking forward to.
"This is initial reactions to this news obviously but wow...
Well congratulations Nintendo. You are not the video game company that I am the most disappointed at this year. Not by a LONG shot if you ignore localization but that's besides the point.
Honestly, it just hit me now. Capcom has been truly awful lately. I mean, I've always considered an amusing, greedy company. I mean the amount of Street Fight re-releases and lazy sequels is probably what they're best known for. But I still liked a lot of their games.
This gen I haven't been playing much from them though. Only really enjoyed Megaman ZX, Okami and Okamiden.
But they have lost me as a customer. They refuse to release Edgeworth 2, first of all. This was a disappointment but not a huge one, last game was a step down for Ace Attorney. I wanted it, but I could live without it. But what frustrated me was the idea that apparently (see: blatant lies) Okamiden in a month in America (blatant lies) sold more (blatant lies!) than Ace Attorney Investigations ever did(BLATANT LIES YOU LIARS!). I consider the popularity of something on the internet as a joke and irrelevent to real life popularity most times. But, are you honestly telling me that the sequel to Okami, that was competing with 3DS and POKEMON sales, did better than the Edgeworth game with little to no competition? Are you serious? Really? Wow, that's a lot to buy Capcom.
And then they do the RE:Mercenaries anti-used game nonsense. I'm not even touching that, I'm honestly more annoyed at a sidegame from RE4 suddenly being a full priced game, but I still think it's terrible and stupid.
But this...wow. This sucks. A lot. I loved Megaman 64 (for the 2 people who don't know, the port of Megaman Legends for N64). Like, I think it's only very slightly worse than Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess (2 games I always put as 2 of my top 10 or 20 favorite games EVER). I never played the sequel or side games. But I loved Megaman 64. Ahead of its time dubbed voice acting, a cool twist on 3D Zelda (before there was 3D Zelda). Creepy atmosphere in dungeons, villians that would make Team Rocket jealous in terms of how fun they are, incredible bosses and love it or hate it gameplay.
I would hate this no matter what. But what pushes this into making me hate Capcom for this is just how petty this is. Keiji Inafume was involved with 2 Megaman games before he left. This is one, the other is Megaman Universe. Which was cancelled. Let's be honest, because Inafune left and spoke his mind, these executives, producers, whatever, at Capcom got mad at what one person said and decided to cancel the games. They were already threatening to cancel it if Prototype failed but I guess they got worried fan support would surprise everyone and they wouldn't be able to do what they want so THEY CANCELLED IT ANYWAY! Because millionaires got mad at what one person said, Megaman fans have basically nothing to look forward to right now. It is completely pathetic, disgusting and even disturbing.
I'm not 100% certain, but I'm likely done with Capcom. I had a positive opinion of Capcom LAST YEAR."
I don't think a corporation with a board of directors cancels projects because a disgruntled staff member left the company, if that project was going to make it money.
And by "think" I mean, if Capcom really did do that, then Capcom is an incompetent business and won't be around in another year. Since Capcom will still be around a year from now, it's safe to say Capcom is not an incompetent business, and it has legitimate reasons for cancelling a project.

it was a factor.
I'm not going to say either would have been a huge success but it was a factor. People can be petty.
Failed to meet unspecified internal criteria... Yeah, sounds like without Inafune to defend it, the project didn't stand a chance. Though they deny this. Well, deny the cancellation had to do with his departure, but I'd say it's more his absence that did MML3 in.

Just watch how they will announce Monster Hunter for 3DS in a few weeks just to make this up. All the fans who are claiming to be pulling the plug on Capcom because of this will all be waiting in front of Gamestop on day 1.

Unspecified internal criteria simply means that it didn't meet what Capcom expected of it. The company has no obligation to reveal what those standards are.
Do you guys ever consider that cancelling or putting projects on hold actually does you all a favour? Duke Nukem Forever, for instance. Look what happened when some bright spark decided to give the fans the game after all.
I'm not saying it's a good thing for Megaman fans - it sucks. But news like this always has people crying out for blood and making accusations without any evidence whatsoever. That's not fair on yourselves (you might be getting upset over nothing), nor Capcom.
I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for cancelling it, until I hear/read that explanation, I'm going to think Capcom are a buncha (beeeeeeeeeeps) that don't care about its fanbase or consumers that wanted MegaMan...
I really thought Capcom was the business last year! MegaMan 11, Monster Hunter Tri and then in with Resident Evil Mercs, Resident Evil Revelations, MegaMan Legends 3 and MegaMan Universe... what the hell happened Capcom?
@WaltzElf I'm with him on this one, sometimes games need to be cancelled until they can get some better ideas of how to approach it and when THEY'RE ready to bring it out for the public then they'll reannounce it. I wish they did that with Duke Nukem Forever, that game was atrocious on every single level and I'm not talking about just the graphics - if you look at the Xbox version compared to the PCs, the PC has a much better framerate and it looks a lot crisper and nicer.
Anyways, if they cancelled it, I'm sure they had good intentions for doing so... but one has to wonder, why it would it take over a decade to build up MegaMan Legends 3? Kinda weird.

this. if they don't want to explain themselves, that's fine — they're just opening themselves up to speculation is all.
