What are your thoughts on these two gems here?

Me? Well first off, I love the original so much because it had everything you'd want in a horror sort of place only not very scary but friendly scary. Luigi's actions are great, the poltergust 3000 is beautiful and the game boy horror......LOVE IT SO MUCH! The game is short but I don't care about that because I loved everything about it. The ghosts, the story, the voice acting......its just there and its my favorite game of all time.

Dark Moon......?

Ok I first want to say that I was psyched when I saw the sequel to a game I love so much. When I saw further, it for some reason didn't feel as much as the original did. Still I decided to get the game after my exam because I LOVE Luigi and this is the sequel to my favorite game so I got it and played it. At first it was ok. I had some problems dealing with the game but it took sometime for that and as I went on, I started enjoying the game.

Then I noticed the game's problems.......

Its not open-ended like the original making searching stuff more like a chore because of it being too linear and I know why they decided to do this because of it being in a handheld and all, but you play games like Super Mario 64 DS and then you'd think "Why like this?". Because of this, searching for Gems and Boos can range from being fun to being a chore because you're not given any hints or a radar as to where they are. There are many times where Luigi will just look at something making me think that there's something there but apparently not which alone is frustrating when you're searching for Boos and Gems.

Then Ranks are another bit problematic in this one because depending on how you finish the level, you're given a score and it does work, it really does but there are times where I did everything right and i STILL get silver. But its not that problematic but when it comes to it, its frustrating.

Then the ghosts are not even spooky. they are poorly done than the original and the only ghost that is actually a ghost is the sneaker because its the only one that scares Luigi. speaking of ghosts, they don't scare you even when you are trapped. Luigi will get scared by the traps but not by the ghosts which is a bummer.

I don't want to complain about the controls because I had no issue with them. At the same time, the vacuum doesn't suck like the original where you can suck atleast four but here, its only two.

With this I got really frustrated and was gonna say something bad about it untill i got the ending and that is when I got soft for the game. So yeah I started being nice about the game and I still like the game and had a fun time with it. Infact I love this game's animation more than the original with the humor, graphics and all that polish.

I could easily give Dark Moon an 8/10 and its the best 3DS game I've played so far. I don't want the next game right now, but I don't want to wait too long for the next one. If Metroid 2, Partners in time, Sonic Advance 2 and other sequels weren't as great as the original, then yeah I guess I can say that this game could be the learning curve for Nintendo to make the next game even better.

What do you guys think about the two games as a whole?

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. More variety, more interesting combat/enemies/bosses (for those complaining, the original game's non portrait ghosts looked generic as hell and barely did anything to attack you), a better/more interesting soundtrack, online multiplayer... yeah, I don't think there's much competition there.

Especially with the music. Damn, love how much more of a 'melody' the tunes in Dark Moon seem to have compared to those in the original:

I liked the first one's "story mode"(or rather the only mode) because I could explore the mansion without having to go through the same text over and over and it was LESS linear(still linear but less) than Dark Moon. though Dark Moon's Scrare Scrapper is the best multiplayer mode I could imagine for a game like Luigi's Mansion so I'll leave it in a draw between the original and Dark Moon both have advantages and flaws but Dark Moon is far less replayable(in main mode)

I lov both games, the original seemed more "dark" and creepy...and quiet...loved the portrait ghosts. While Dark Moon has more mansions, a longer story mode...and I love the bosses, and how they possess whatever and attack you with it. (I love the clock for some reason, maybe its the music. xD)
Also love DM's humor with Luigi, lots of funny scenes. (one of my favorites is when he finds the portals, and starts waving to himself, lol)

I did not play the original LM but I did see my friend play it and I know I would have preferred if we were just dropped in the mansions and we explore in our own way I did not like the game being mission structured (or whatever you wanna call that kinda structure). Maybe I just miss metroid XD

@Artwark To get gold ranks I'm pretty sure you have to complete missions in a certain amount of time/cash and not take to much damage this varies a lot between levels, on topic as much as I love the first game the mansion is tiny so I can't see complaints linearity being used against DM. For me there about tied LM and DM have great replayability the only thing that edges DM slightly more is the extra content, music and bosses.

I still like the original better because of that lovely atmosphere, luigi's comments on everything, the secrets, and of course, the outstanding bosses. Sure, Dark Moon had bosses, but to be honest, they really weren't that special, excluding the treacherous mansion boss, and of course the final boss.

I don't know how someone could say original Luigi's Mansion had outstanding bosses They were one of the weakest links for me about the game. Still original is freaking awesome and I have played it 4 times through. "Mario? Maaaariiooo?!" I loved that stuff. I was kind of disappointed they didnt have that in DM excluding few parts.

Oh how much I smiled when I heard there was a Luigi's Mansion sequel coming for 3DS. I couldn't wait. Now that I have completed the game only 3 days ago, I can honestly say this was truly worthy sequel. There was more variety in enviroments and....the bosses! They were awesome! Every boss so unique (well I didn't like the "ice one" that much) and later ones were actually little challenging. Also DM contains more secrets and multiplayer giving it more gameplay time.

Both games are (imo) equally good. Only thing I could wish is making the casual ghost more of a threat. In both games I died like 3 times and they were only due my own clumsy playing, no game difficulty. I mean, Poltergust is very strong vacuum cleaner but they are freaking ghosts!

I see what you mean with the normal ghosts not being much of a threat. On the other hand, at least we got the ScareScraper, which on higher difficulties, DID make the ghosts a genuine threat.

TOO MUCH TEXT! I mean seriously. I love Dark Moon but you can't beat the original. I was severely disappointed that it was split into levels and not open-ended. Made me feel like I wasn't exploring a mansion, rather I was completing a level, similar to how I would complete a level in the super mario bros games.

They've improved and added a lot but for me, it's all brought down by the fact that there's too much text, and it's mission based.

Got Dark Moon pre-downloaded on my sisters 3DS. I never played the original, but I always tend to watch gameplay of older nintendo games so I know what its mainly like. But since I'm all about humor DM is wonderful and full of variety, and I actually enjoyed collecting the gems so far. Though I have put the game on pause for now as I want to save DM when I am really bored.

Since Luigi is my favorite video game character this game will always be in my all time favorites.

I enjoyed Dark Moon a lot more. The original felt somewhat poorly designed. Dark Moon improved on pretty much everything the first game did while also adding more IMO.

The only thing I really miss from the original game is the vacuum controls.

I never picked up the original Luigi's Mansion because it really didn't look like a game I'd like back in the day. However, I REALLY enjoyed Dark Moon. It was my favorite 3DS game of 2013. I'd go back and play the original, but like most older Nintendo games, the price skyrocketed to a ridiculous amount

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

the original, it had a great setting, good atmosphere and above everything else in Dark Moon and I hate to point this out, better controls! The original was built around the idea of using the GameCube analog and c-stick to control both Luigi and the Poltergeist 3000, in Dark Moon the controls feel a bit tanky, and not the good caugh Resident Evil type of tanky either, it feels more like a step back from the original, despite having more content overall. Dark Moon is a good game yes but not as good as the original was.

of course this is all i.m.o

They both have their own charms. I would actually lean towards the original because, while shorter and having less extra "content", I really felt abandoned in a creepy mansion (come on, E. Gadd doesn't make me feel all that much safer) and for half the game didn't even know what was going on (all we were given at the start was that Mario was missing). I was left to figure things out on my own and fumble through the place trying to solve puzzles. Dark Moon... Well, first of all, King Boo is present right from the start (though the characters didn't see him). I don't have to figure out what happened to the Dark Moon, I SAW it. Luigi agrees to search the mansion simply at E. Gadd's request (what happened to the timid man who only entered the first mansion to save his brother, the scaredy cat that was hypnotized to be Mario in M&L because he was too scared to go alone? It felt out of character here). Not to mention nobody seemed to question where Mario was for most of the game. The ghosts lacked personality (I missed the portrait ghosts though I loved the possessors, especially the second one). The reference to how King Boo returned was so ridiculous but actually, I thought it was so out there that I enjoyed that part. Still, I did love Dark Moon for other reasons. There was much more to explore and such varied environments. The upgrade system was cool (though it could've been used more, I maxed out the upgrades before the third "mansion"). And Luigi... Oh man, he was a riot. I felt like I was playing Mr. Bean: The Videogame. This is why I love Luigi more, he has so much personality and the slapstick humor really suited him. All in all, though I don't like all the changes, Dark Moon is a worthy sequel, even if I prefer the original.

I must say this though: Dark Moon gave me a new hatred for Toads. There are few things more annoying than a Toad (or, heaven help you, two) running around screaming and crying hysterically, constantly getting in the way and distracting you when you're trying to capture some ghosts and avoid their attacks. And then, when the ghosts are gone, calming the toad is another pain in the rear because it won't get near me!! Oh, I'm sorry, you're afraid of clocks? THEN WHY ARE YOU IN A CLOCKWORK FACTORY?!? Oh look, some water to cross, isn't the logical reaction to that to scream and cry in the corner? No? Only for Toads? Sorry, as you can see, Toad escorting was not my favorite part of the game, haha

Luigi's Mansion easily. I replayed it now for almost 7 times, and I liked what little cut scenes there was the most. Everything about the game is just...better. And I own and completed both games. Also, I like the GC tons more than the 3DS.
