Definitely the first one 100%. The enemy designs were simply amazing. Did we all forget the creepy graveyard boss (and Mario Galaxy boss later on)? Not to mention the ghosts in the original all had identities, such as the baby, or the body builder, or all the others. The only ones in Dark Moon that had any sort of identity were the three sisters. And the whole "mission" gameplay really took a hit on the immersion on the 3DS game.

That being said, I love the second one's online co-op/multiplayer. And the game itself is really well made. I just prefer the original.

I feel that they're both quality experiences. There are things I like better about the original and things I thought worked better in Dark Moon. I can't really pick one or the other as being the better game.

When I close my eyes, I see pixilated blood.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
It simply has the better controls, more humor, and 5 mansions.
The only flaws I see in it are
-The paintings seem lazy seeing how the paintings in the first game had full color
-This could have very well been a remake because I felt it didn't continue on much with plot points of the 1st game (How did King Boo escape his painting without the Ghost Portrificationizer, or how come he had to use the Ghost Portrificationizer to make a painting last time when this time he can just use his crown?)
-No Daisy. Seriously, instead of Mario getting kidnapped a second time... they could've cast Daisy in there.
-The 4th Mansion's Boss -_-
-Too many puzzles, not enough ghost-busting
-I like the 1st games graphics better
Other than that, I love the sequel's charm and bosses.
Seriously though, E. Gadd's calls can get annoying in DM.

Love the Mario RPGs!

Dark Moon in my opinion was a letdown. It was good, and I loved the references it made to the first game, but that being said, sequels should be as good, or even better than the original game, and Dark Moon was far worse. The ghosts were too easy to capture, they were cartoonish and not scary, the Boos were more annoying than they were creepy, the music was good, but it wasn't creepy. The Dual Scream was cool, and I loved the remix of the song the Gameboy Horror played in the first game, but the cool 1st person mode where you could scan objects was removed. I liked being able to free roam in the first game, if I wanted to, I could walk from one side of the mansion to the other, and just stare at paintings and check furniture for money, without a stupid clock reminding me I'm being timed for this, and ontop of that, you comeplete one objective in Dark Moon, then you are instantly teleported back to E. Gadd's lab. The stage and level concept is good for some games, but it felt really out of place for this one. I know I already talked about ghosts a little, but now I want to describe them and their behavior. The ghosts in the first game were threatening, and they could surprise the player by randomly popping up at you in the first game, but in dark moon, they kinda just randomly appeared in the room when you entered. on top of that, the ghosts in the original Luigi's mansion could kill you if you weren't careful enough. They were actually challenging. In Dark Moon, the Greenies would punch you, and you would be more frustrated than worried about dying, and the fact that they would drop money if you charged up the Poltergust and drained all their health, made it seem more like you wanted to get money instead of actually capturing the ghost. The strobebulb was kinda a good idea, but it would get stressful if the ghost was a little to the right and out of range of the flash. I also hated that Luigi would always keep his flashlgiht out, even in lit rooms. (This one is not a huge thing, it just looks awkward holding a flashlight in a room that you don't need it in) Upgrades for the Poltergust were a pain in the butt to get, and if you knew there was a hard mission coming up, you would have to go back and grind old mission to get a few extra bucks. The Ranking system made it feel more like a race, making it almost impossible to be able to explore the mansions, and for boss fights (Gloomy Manor Boss) It was hard to get gold rank because you almost always ended up getting hurt, and one of the things that determined your rank was how much health you lost. The premise of the whole Dark Moon thing was also kind of stupid. A purple moon in the sky made out of crystals made all the ghosts behave themselves...So the ghosts are basically brainwashed into being nice. If that's the case, where was the Dark Moon in the first game? Or does it only work around Evershade Valley? But then, does that mean all the ghosts outside of Evershade Valley are evil? I don't know, but ghosts are supposed to be evil, that was the whole point of the first game, take out all of the evil spirits, defeat the boos and their king, and save your brother! Speaking of the Boos, the "One Boo per level" Thing was idiotic, how does it make sense that you go back to an old mission to capture the Boo? Does E Gadd have a time machine? And King Boo... "Hey guys, how do we make King Boo look creepier?" Oh! I know! Make him 4 times bigger and made the area around his eyes black! GOOD IDEA! Not to mention he was one of the easiest bosses in the entire game to take down. Well...I'm done ranting...But yeah...The first game is better..
