I just got a 3DS, So, how close to you havr to walk by someone with another 3DS to hit off a StreetPass? Also from what I heard you have to walk by someone you can't just sit down next to them. Does StreetPass work thought houses and car too?

I'm not entirely sure. I know when pictochat was on the old DS systems the range was around 60 ft, so I would think streetpass would be something close to that. And me and my brother had problems getting our 3DS's streetpass to work for a while. This was made for Japan, so don't expect too many hits.

What about getting hits from passing cars well walking down the street?

I'm pretty sure those cars go too fast by you to connect. If they stop, then maybe.

I'm gonna make a conservative guess of about 50 feet for StreetPass connection. I imagine it would be fairly easy to StreetPass from car to car if both people are stopped at a red light. The one thing I have no clue about is the speed of the transfer. I imagine its fairly quick if two people walking by each other can have a successful transfer.

Yes. Yes you do.

But if anyone asks, particularly if that person is a police officer, you didn't hear it from me.

No idea, but I know this: It's not entirely reliable. Here's why:
Was out in Leeds city centre today with my wife and son. All 3 had our systems with us, but I was actually carrying my own and my son's in my jeans pockets as his pockets are too small. Between us, we encountered 7 different hits, but none of us actually got all of them, despite our systems being in the immediate vicinity of each other for pretty much the whole time.
Hit 1 - Me only.
Hit 2 - My son only.
Hit 3 - All 3 of us.
Hit 4 - My son and myself.
Hit 5 - My son only.
Hit 6 - My wife and son.
Hit 7 - Me only.

To be honest, it's pretty annoying that 2 systems within a foot of each other don't get the same hits out and about, but I guess it's possible that a 3rd system comes into range for the briefest of times and only one of the systems gets chance to do the exchange, but we know where 2 of the systems were, they were demonstration machines in a Game store and all 5 systems were within 10 feet of each other for a good amount of time yet there was only one hit that all three of us shared, so something didn't work.

could it be possible that streetpass hits go one at a time? like perhaps your system was contacting the one guy throughout the duration of your time within range of their system, thus only you got the hit, then your son's got the next hit first, then you were in range of the third 3DS for long enough for all three of you to get a hit, etc. and so forth? surely you weren't the only ones there with 3DSes, maybe other people came into play as well... and perhaps interference from other electronics to be considered?

Interference is the most likely one, I'd suspect. Once the interaction is done between systems, I'd expect they go back into "search" mode and possibly the same ones connect and dismiss each other.

yeah. im sure the 3ds scans one system at a time. i doubt it can multiple scan at the same time. better have official infos on this feature.

and i hope nintendo didnt plan for a massive hump strategy for earth over-population. this could be crazy...

Yeah it's really not accurate if you ask me. Today my sis and I were walking across a market. She got 4 hits. I got NONE, except for my sister herself. She has 5 people total in her Plaza now due to that (1 from an earlier encounter), while I have none whatsoever except for her. What gives? I did have my 3DS with me at all times as did she, and we were close together at pretty much all times.

I'm not sure if it's important to mention, but I have mine in a grey carry case while hers is in a black one. And early in the walk through the market, I 'covered' the 3DS carry case with about 3 or 4 CD's and a Gamecube game I bought. Could my signal have been disturbed by the CD's and/or their cases or what? I'm kinda doubting this since the first time my sister got a hit while I didn't, we both simply carried our 3DS in our pockets (still in the carry cases) at the convenient store. I have absolutely no idea what causes it and this is honestly ruining the entire StreetPass function for me.

Edit: Maybe it's important to mention that when I opened my 3DS when arriving back home, it seemed to just shut down (even though I'm 100% sure it was still on, the green light even showed which signed I StreetPassed my sister), but the battery was still full. I'm at a riddle here honestly.

@Yosher - The whole shutdown thing is an entirely different problem which has also been discussed on these forums somewhere. Sometimes when it should be in sleep mode, it powers off. Highly annoying and I suspect the main reason for you missing out on the hits.

I know what you mean about empty plaza syndrome, my son now has a plaza population of 10 but my wife's is 5.

It didn't shut down the first time though, it only did today. What's weird though is that I did get my sister as a hit, but nobody else.

And your wife's got more than me at least, since I've only got 1! Guess it's better than 0 but still, kinda depressing to see someone you traveled with get lots of hits and you getting none at all whatsoever. I'll be going to another market tomorrow and see if I have more luck there but I'm not putting my hopes up again.

You can get streetpass hits in Leeds? I know which city I'm spending more time in if I get a 3DS. I had Pokémon Black on me for a full day in Bradford and got squat LOL.

I tend to walk with my crotch out thrusting my hips/pockets at any passers by in a sort of never-ending club-dance move. Even if they don't own a 3DS, they know they just got street-passed.

yeah man, thats how you do it !
This should be the official 3Ds owner move. Swing that crotch around. This is easy to see in public, so anyone who has a 3DS can go swing his crotch at him or her.
Seriously, my plaza had only 5 people in including me...i feel alone buying this thing.
it feels great to be less common, but i wish i could meet more people with the same 3DS crazyyness as me.
let the time flow, more people will get it...i guess

anyway, i love it, i carry it everywhere with me, all the time. there's a mark on my leg where my cargo pants pocket is. Soon, my hair will stop growing at this spot.
