Topic: How about 3D Classics versions of licensed games but with the license removed?

Since they are remaking the game anyway, how about they choose a game that they couldn't release on the Virtual Console because of the license but remove the license for the 3D Classics version and replace it with another character that they do own?

Think back to how Hudson did this to the Wonder Boy game they created for Sega resulting in the Adventure Island series being born.

I'd like some of the NES Disney games by Capcom. Remove everything related to Disney but keep the backgrounds and gameplay the same. As for who should be in the starring role, I was thinking of Roll from the Mega Man games.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

How so? Its no different to how Adventure Island is Wonder Boy with a name change and different characters. Just like I'm proposing here.

That would take way too much effort, and most developers won't bother remaking a classic game and adding their own characters in.

Sorry, it doesn't work like that I'm afraid.

would take way too much effort, and the end result would be nowhere near as good as the original.

I would think Disney would maintain some rights over the entirety of their licensed games, not just the parts related to their license. Even if they didn't, the plots and sometimes the level locations would also need to be changed.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

The best games are first party anyway. Can you imagine how awesome a 3D remake of Super Metroid would be?

Thaaaaaanks for noticin' me.

It's not completely out of the question, I think, but it would probably still need a bigger budget than what these releases are given anyway.

@Bass_X0: Licensing isn't always as simple as that. Disney may own the rights to all the artwork and programming code (including the backgrounds) making it very difficult to just replace characters. Copyright and licensing can be very complex.

Then someone explain how Hudson got away with copying Sega's Wonder Boy when they made Adventure Island. Couldn't Sega sue them for copyright infringement?

No, Sega couldn't sue, since Hudson bought the rights for Wonder Boy from Escape, the company that developed the game.

Escape was the developer, Sega was the publisher. How was Hudson able to secure the game rights if Sega (the publisher) owned the Wonder Boy IP? You'd have to go through the publisher to secure IP rights.

Not seeing this happening as well, but you bring a great point regarding Disney: they used to release some great videogames! Still consider Lion King for the SNES one of the best ever.
