The max volume of my 3DS XL is 50% of that of the original 3DS. If this is true for your 3DS XL, please call Nintendo at 1-800-255-3700 to document this. If enough people call in, they may do something about this.

I haven't noticed from playing the demo system in EB.
It's very quiet, but I thought it was about the same as the original 3DS which has terrible volume.
I haven't actually sat done and done comparisons though, so I'll take your word for it.

If it's true then I'm kind of reluctant to do a system transfer.

If I load up the same software on my 3DS and my 3DS XL, like Streetpass Mii Plaza or Mario and Sonic Virtual Card Collections, the 3DS's volume overpowers the 3DS XL at max volume that's for sure.

I don't always use headphones either so this is annoying.

Nintendo... you did it wrong. D:
We needed INCREASED volume on the 3DS, not DECREASED!

I complained to my branch of nintendo about the regular 3DS's sound a while back, I wanted to listen to my music using my headphones, but there's no point because it's less than half the volume than if you don't use headphones. So I asked them if I was able to suggest they do an update for this and they said no, citing that "the volume is the most safest for people to be listening at". Man, Nintendo customer service is terrible, they didn't even let me talk to their supervisor or someone I could suggest they pass on the complaint to and they said no without even giving a reason why.
I also hate how if you find some info on the internet on a website and you try to confirm it with nintendo, they simply state they don't comment on rumour and speculation. A year ago there was an australasian software ratings board rating for Game & Watch Collection 2, which by the way was only added a year ago to our club nintendo and I rang up nintendo because i wanted to confirm it, as I had enough points to get it (and they have barely anything good to get by the way) and they pretty much shot it out of the sky, only until about 3 weeks later it arrived on the website. Coincidence? I think not.

If the original 3DS has the highest level of volume to listen to while still being safe, I think we're all going to be deaf by the time we're old because nearly every other device around is a lot louder than it.
...Although, the 3D Classics theme is rather deafening.

Your Nintendo branch must be awful. Mine have sent me replacement covers and repaired systems for free among other things. But then again they know I'm a frequent customer...
But I agree that Club Nintendo AU is terrible compared to all the other ones. The only thing I want from them is the Giant AR Card.

Haven't noticed any difference myself. I usually use headphones anyway though.

When trying to play Kid Icarus in EB on the demo model I could barely hear a thing, but that's just how it normally is if I try to play my 3DS in EB without headphones.
The volume on the 3DS is fine for at home, but if you go out in public it's atrocious.

I plug my 3DS into the Logitech 5.1 surround system and crank the subwoofer problem solved

If you want to take it to the streets just plug it into the car stereo aux... yes sometimes I drive with game music pounding the bass

At GameStop two days Ago I play T-FF on it and thought it was kind of weak personally. Wasn't sure if it was me or the store was a bit loud. So I asked a friend of mine and he said its a bit weaker then the 3ds. You would think bigger system bigger volume. I guess that not the case. Wow they screwed that up! He said its still worth the trade off. I do mostly use headphones anyways but still would like to have at the very least the same as the original.

I noticed this yesterday when I bought mine too. I looked on a forum and saw that the system comes out of the box with the sound setting configured to surround sound. If you go into system settings and switch the sound from surround to stereo, the volume returns to around the same level as the original 3DS.

Well that's good to know!

So what?
3DS XL on stereo = original 3DS on surround?

I'm not sure that 3DS XL on stereo = 3DS on surround. I just switched my 3DS XL to stereo, and it seems to be the same volume. Anyone else want to test this?

Hmmm probably not. They probably have the volume that way so people don't blow their ears out and sue them. My suggestion if you want great sound with a handheld just buy some headphones. Honestly I cant even play a handheld without headphones anymore to me headphones just add to the experience.
