Tasuki, that's not a bad idea, but I'm losing my hearing, so I can't use headphones anymore.

I am sorry to hear that. Well than have you tried maybe getting some small speakers that will plug into the headphone jack? I know they sell those for like portable cd players and such the only problem is they are not that portable you would have to stay stationary while playing your 3DS if you don't already do that now.

When I changed it, I saw a significant increase in the volume, but that's just me. There were some other people on that particular forum who said the same thing.

Yes, I have a Monster portable blue-tooth speaker with a line-in cable that I use. It makes the sound a little louder, but not by much. I'm wondering if Nintendo may have removed a pre-amp from the 3DS XL to cut costs.

My new 3DS XL has good sound. I've never had a 3DS original for comparison. I find hand held systems don't have near enough juice in the audio department anyway. My Vita also lacks volume output. Quality headphones make a big difference with all handhelds.

Mine isn't that loud,I guess it's the small speakers.

It can't be that some units have better sound than others, I just compared my regular 3DS' sound to that of my brand new XL and there was a huge difference, the XL was a little more quite than my previous model. But I'm not too worried about it, I'm just thankful I got a unit that doesn't seem to have any issues whatsoever, i'm sure the sound is meant to be like that.
The DSi XL had far better sound than it's previous models, I don't know why Nintendo didn't follow suit after the regular 3DS with this idea. Oh well I love my new 3DS XL just the way it is, but for some reason I think nintendo does this kind of thing on purpose, so that you end up buying the next model, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

Mine is OK. The volume drop sounds like less than all of you are experiencing and I can hear more detail in sound effects now but the overall quality has decreased a bit. I notice it most on 3DS software downloads from what I've tested. I'm indifferent to the change.

I agree I am happy my 3DS XL is defect free! Sound quality is fine for a handheld system. I was disappointed when my Vita had to be cranked all the way up for decent sound output from the minuscule speakers. 3DS XL confirms for me, that they just put bare minimum weak speakers on handhelds. I have tried headphones in my 3DS XL the past couple days for comparison.... and it's like night and day. Through headphones, the sound is so good you won't want to play without. Without headphones... you may as well flip the volume switch to max, and you'll still miss all the wonderful details and nuances you get with the headphones.

it is impossible to get good sound without a proper sized loudspeaker (and enclosure!). There's no space inside a 3DS (XL or not) for decent speakers

When I took my 3DS Xl into my local Game the other week to question them about the Power Save.
The Guy in there said, that my screen isn't as bright as the one they had in store.
I put my brightness up to 5,and it still weren't as bright as there's,and that was on brightness 3.

Weird ain't it?

I think we should stop trying to find things wrong with our great 3DS XL systems and just enjoy 'em. Get some headphones if you want it louder, if not, then enjoy all the same!

@Waveboy: Yeah I refuse to play my 3DS if I dont have a pair of headphones. Personally I can't wait to dive in to Resident Evil Revelations with the headphones for me their is no other way to play that kind of game. I think I just might wait till Halloween to crack that bad boy open.

No need to. It's not really scary. Play it NOW!

But that would mean taking time from NSMB2 if I were to play it now. But in all honestly with NSMB2 taking up my gaming time and than the new expansion for World of Warcraft coming out next month it probably wont be till Halloween that I do get a chance to play that game.

Yes I agree people seem to be looking for a problem with 3DS XL! The only problem I have is getting it away from my daughters. Otherwise I am satisfied with it in every way. Oh yeah resident evil has great sound via headphones. Very atmospheric and creepy.

I haven't really noticed any major issues with the XL's volume so far.
I will say though, some sounds don't come out quite right when the volume's set to max.
