So once New Super Mario Bros. 2 releases, both 3DS and 3DS XL shall provide profit.

@kingofe3 I guess its good there's a huge amount of big games coming out in the next season. We have NSMB2, Oni-Training, Cave Story 3D, Devil Summoner, Lost Heroes, Bravely Default and Luigi's Mansion are both coming out soon too. Of course games like Monster Hunter 4 and Project X Zone and Layton VS. Ace Attorney will all bring a profit when they come out.
The rest of 2012 will be good for the system.

I'll never understand why gamers (and game "journalists") care so much about hardware making money.
It's about investing in a single company really, like back in the day where people either had to go for all Sega Megadrive or all Super Nintendo.
Most people couldn't have it both ways, and the magazines at the time were very competitive and marketed aggressively.
So in that regard, when you get invested in a particular company, you want to see them do well. The better they do, the longer they can keep up their work.
Anyhow I've heard that the 3DS XL is being sold at a profit which is great, and with the 3DS too being sold at a profit, well then.
Looks like the 3DS/XL, with the launch of NSMB2 will definitely be printing money for Nintendo again.

I don't think you got what I was saying.
Whether Nintendo sells its hardware at a loss or not has such a minimal impact on its overall profitability that it's a pointless statistic to follow. Nintendo's money comes from software and licensing - neither of which perform well if a console doesn't sell.
Loss leading on hardware is a marvellous way of making the high-margin parts of the business take off.
But no. People seem to think that making a $10 profit on a piece of hardware, rather than a $5 loss, makes all the difference.
I feel like while the system itself was being sold at a loss, individual games were bringing in a profit, balancing out a portion of it. Monster Hunter 3G, Fire Emblem, Zelda Ocarina 3D, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and various other games have all been fairly big hits.

Whether the 3DS is being sold at a loss or not isn't much of a factor, as long as you're selling top notch games, those alone will keep the system afloat (coughnotvitacough). After all, games systems will eventually stop selling because once everyone who wants one, has one, 3DS sales will slowly dry up, it's the games that keep the system going.
not really. that would probably shoot it right back down to "unprofitable" again. ...but if they did, i'd be tempted to trade for a red 3DS instead of the XL.
