Re: TurboGrafx-16 Releases - September

whalleywhat

Yeah, it's a shame there's no plans to bring over Gradius II yet. I'll buy Cho Aniki though. Good shooter with interesting music and visuals. And, uh, the first one's nowhere near as "different" as later installments.

Re: Samurai Shodown II

whalleywhat

SamSho II seems to play fairly different from the SFII template. I think that's where a lot of people's complaints come from. It doesn't seem to allow for combos and you need to be fairly reactive and hit big when you get an opening. If you try to button mash and be too aggressive, the AI is gonna pick you apart. I like it that way, makes you learn and understand the mechanics. As I get to know the game better, I can see where poor decisions and lack of patience are making me lose rounds.
Just a couple of complaints: seeing as you can load from your save anyways, they might as well have just let you have infinite credits. It just makes it more of a nuisance than it needs to be, and if you're playing for score, you're only gonna use one credit anyways. Also, it would be nice if they'd mapped the strong attacks to L1 and R1 on the Classic Controller, but I guess that wouldn't be accurate.

Re: Blazing Lazers

whalleywhat

If you want some variety, go for Blazing Lazers. I haven't played it yet, but it's developed by a different company than the other two, Compile, which is best known for the Aleste games. I'm thinking about picking it up myself.

Re: Mega Man

whalleywhat

This game is not as hard as most people seem to think it is. I've had it for less than a week, and I'm already up to Yellow Devil, and it just seems like it's going to take practice to get past him. Even if I never did, it would still be worth my 500 points. The game is just a complete joy. Seriously, it might not be as good as Mega Man 2, but I don't see any reason not to buy both.

Re: Bionic Commando Not Approved For Virtual Console

whalleywhat

It's weird how people seem to always rationalize that Nintendo has some elaborate plan for VC and that's the reason that they put garbage on the service instead of all the good games they could be putting up. Nintendo doesn't care about VC and they clearly have no idea what games are good and what games are bad. The rationale behind being offered one of the greatest NES games that has what looks to be a pretty successful remake coming out for XBLA, PSN and PC for your download service and responding "Nah, lets put out Sonic for the SMS," is inscrutable. It's like peering into the mind of a madman. You shouldn't, you won't understand any more and the experience will scar you.

Re: USA VC Update: Sonic (Master System) and Splatterhouse 2

whalleywhat

Just a reminder to everyone that Nintendo never confirmed anything, this is all the result of third parties thinking they could dictate when the games were gonna be released. The same thing happened with Hudson a couple weeks back, so I don't know why anyone's surprised. Personally, I kept my expectations low and figured if either Mega Man or SamSho II were released I'd be happy, but the releases being what they are is the punchline to the whole thing. Turns out, NoA are comedic geniuses. Drink those tears, Reggie. Drink em up.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in America (23rd July)

whalleywhat

I think Star Soldier R's big problem is the way people view games these days. They think of games as this big movie-like experience that you play through once to beat (and have your hand held the whole way). They can't wrap their heads around how you could get much value out of a 5 minute game. It's a shame. I liked Lost Winds, but I've easily gotten more enjoyment out of Star Soldier R, and I've mostly been playing the 2 minute mode.
But license seems to have a lot more to do with sales here. Lost Winds, Toki Tori and SSR are all lower then they should be. SPOGS racing? Whoever bought that and not one of these games, hang your head in shame.

Re: See Mega Man 9 In Action

whalleywhat

Get off my lawn, darn kids!
It's nice that it looks 8 bit without the actual limitations of the NES, ie no screen-flicker, slowdown, etc... Man, if Capcom releases some more footage of this every week, I'll be too stoked to notice how crappy the VC/WW releases are.

Re: Mega Man 1 & 2 Coming To North America Soon?

whalleywhat

About time. Really, they should have every Mega Man that was released on a VC console out by the time 9 comes out. I know, finally getting what I want and now I'm asking for more, but it just makes sense. 3 is almost as good as 2, and 5 and 6 have their moments.

Re: Gley Lancer

whalleywhat

Came here to check if this was ESRB rated. I will buy this as soon as it comes to NA. Unless Thunder Force 3 or 4 or M.U.S.H.A. show up, this is my most wanted VC shooter. Great music, (no cheese-metal. sorry gates/lords fans) simple but effective controls, nice graphics, plus, unlike SNES shooters, Genesis and TG16 shmups don't suffer from crippling slowdown.

Re: Mega Man 9 Is Coming To WiiWare In Retro Style

whalleywhat

Haha. For all the people saying Nintendo needed to do an old style Metroid or Konami should do an 8 bit Castlevania, I thought you were nuts. It's fun to dream and all, but it'll never happen. And, yet, Capcom's doing it. This is awesome. A lot of people prefer the X games, but I'm one of the ones who thinks MegaMan has never been better than it was on the NES. If they can actually pull this off, with fun levels, good music and no crap characters, dumb stories or weak gameplay, it will RULE.
p.s. Comparing Mega Man to Mario is dumb. Mega Man is far from Capcom's premiere IP anymore, while Mario is still the star at Nintendo, so the likelihood that Capcom would invest the time and resources to do a proper current gen Mega Man title is next to zero, Also, Galaxy already had Mario 64 to build on, which is considered one of the greatest games ever, while there has never been a good 3D Mega Man. Go play Sonic the Hedgehog for the 360 and then tell me you want a 3D Mega Man.

Re: R-Type III: The Third Lightning

whalleywhat

Who said you have to replay the whole level when you die? Each level has a few checkpoints, plus you have unlimited continues and they also start you from the checkpoints. So you can keep re-trying a section as many times as you have to. And you will have to. Personally, for a shooter as tactical as this that requires memorization to get through sections, this is an awesome way to dole out lives. If I had to restart levels and had limited continues, I'd probably get really frustrated. Great graphics, and the slowdown is nowhere near as bad as Gradius III.

Re: Microsoft Befuddled by WiiWare

whalleywhat

I thought he was gonna have some valid criticisms, but it was really just him trying to convince Devs "Hey, I know we massively cut your share of XBLA profits and are going to remove your games if they don't achieve certain sales or review scores, but we da best! Please don't make good games for Nintendo!!"

Re: Xiotex Amazed By Reaction To WiiWare Rebuttal

whalleywhat

Groan. The guy was right to say what he did. Nintendo provides no usable information for prospective developers on what their requirements are. The guy just got muzzled cause lawyers got involved. Also: Deep Throat was a steamy punk loudmouth whiner. Nixon was just trying to get his swerve on.

Re: Nintendo: "Hard Drives Are For Geeks"

whalleywhat

I could get angry about this, but it just reinforces my opinion that anyone who works for Nintendo who isn't Japanese is a COLOSSAL DOUCHEBAG. I guess he's interpreted Iwata's comments about needing a solution for the hardcore Nintendo fans as "LOL gheys." Okay, I guess I am angry.

Re: Luc Bernard Talks Eternity's Child, Rose Princess and Uwe Boll

whalleywhat

Cool. He was clearly in a bad mood in that other interview because he isn't happy with how the game turned out. I'm sure if I got interviewed (hah) on a day I was in a bad mood, people on the internet would be like "WTF?" This may be strange to gamers, because everything is so PR based, but lots of artists are unhappy with their own work, even when other people like it, cause they start out with a vision and aren't able to meet it. I certainly don't agree with all of Bernard's opinions, so it's possible the game will actually suck, but for 500 points I'm willing to just see the art and hear the music.
If Bernard and Boll get together it could be a perfect storm of fanboy hatred. They should make a film starring Jack Thompson.

Re: World of Goo - New info and screenshots

whalleywhat

Do want. If this game is as full featured as a Lemmings game, with tons of levels, I'll gladly pay 1500 for it. 1500 is a good price for a full game when there isn't $35 worth of DLC piled on top (wink wink). But 1000 points would make this a no-brainer.

Re: Square-Enix Changes Its Mind About The Virtual Console?

whalleywhat

My only hope would be that they would look at the amount of effort it would require to do, say, a Chrono Trigger remake that anyone would think was adequate was just too much effort when they can throw a rom on VC and print money. Post-GBA, I don't think they can get away with a straight 2D port, so it would need to be mostly or all new assets and they'd have to be sure they weren't screwing it up. Do the right thing Squeenix! Free money!

Re: North American WiiWare launch games

whalleywhat

Why do people like Dr. Mario so much? I had it on Game Boy and I only remember it as another Tetris knock-off. This looks pretty good for launch, definitely better than Japan's. Just wondering how long I'll have to wait for World of Goo.

Re: New WiiWare Game Allows You To Massacre Undead Animals in Style

whalleywhat

Do 6 year olds know how to use credit cards? If I was a kid and "borrowed" my parents credit card to buy gory games, I'd have my Wii given to charity or something. Children should have limited access to money, and no access when it comes to buying things online unsupervised. Simple as that.
Why do people care so much that there's an M rated game? If it's good, I'll buy it.

Re: Japan To Get Dracula X And Metal Slug Next Tuesday

whalleywhat

"Rondo. Rondo. Rondo. Castlevania III is the best entry in the series. Even Iga admits as much. Of course I want Rondo, but I want Castlevania III more."
That's Iga's opinion. I don't see what it has to do with "admitting." For people who like modern style, SotN type Castlevanias, Rondo is much closer to that type of game, with branching paths and huge levels.

Re: Top 10 RPGs We Want To Come To The Virtual Console

whalleywhat

Even just on a technical level, stuff like not forcing you into random encounters with underpowered enemies, Earthbound stands head and shoulders over a lot of its competition, but it's the personality and writing that makes earthbound so enjoyable for me. If you want to get a band of warriors and mages and save the world from the ultimate evil, there's hundreds of different games that provide that, but Earthbound manages to be unique, genuinely funny and interesting. I would watch Earthbound if it was a show or a movie, and apart from FF III/VI and VII, there's not many of these games, as much as I enjoy them, that I'd say that for. And Advent Children sucked balls.

Re: Will Sega CD Support Ever Come To The Virtual Console?

whalleywhat

The Sega CD Snatcher is also the best Snatcher, IMO, because of its brightly coloured anime gore. I've seen screens from the Playstation version, and they're just nowhere near as good. The game is very short and very simplistic (apart from a few target shooting sequences, it's just choosing options on menus, which the game itself makes fun of.) But it's a short blast of awesome. I'd love to have that game as part of my VC library.

Re: Why April Is A Massive Month For the Virtual Console

whalleywhat

Seeing as SNK majorly boned the Metal Slug collection for Wii by not waiting for Classic Controller support, I'd gladly pay Neo Geo VC prices for individual titles, especially cause I only really want 1-3. I'm not convinced this means any of these games are coming to NA though. Still waiting for Mega Man 2. I don't know, Sin & Punishment is still the shining example of what VC can do. Some people have been saying that the PSP port of Rondo of Blood has some issues, and its emulation of the original isn't so hot either, so bringing this version to European and NA VC would be a massive coup. fingers crossed

Re: LostWinds: One to Watch on WiiWare?

whalleywhat

This is definitely one of my most wanted, probly after World of Goo, whenever that comes out. I just read about Square's pricing scheme for the Final Fantasy game, and I've lost all interest. They want 1500 points for it, but it only comes with one of the 4 races, and you have to pay 500 points for each additional one. Forget that nonsense.
I'll also buy a lot of multiplayer puzzle type games, like this Tetris update, especially if they're 500 points.

Re: Talking Point: The State of Play of the Virtual Console

whalleywhat

The reason I continue to complain about VC's release schedule is that for the longest time I couldn't see any non-crass reason for the release schedule to be drying up the way it is. Stuff like "there's already a lot of games" and "Nintendo can only do so much" just seems like apologies when it seems like they only need to sort out licensing issues and store a rom on a computer. Also, I like RPGs, action games and platformers, and don't really care for shoot em ups, beat em ups and racing games, while VC's selection has been slanted towards those types of titles. With the pricing scale the way it is, obviously 800 points for A Link to the Past or 1000 points for Starfox 64 are a good deal, but this doesn't hold up for MANY of the lesser titles.
Still, I recently found out that it costs money to get an ESRB rating, or from one of the other rating groups, and it might actually cost a lot of money. For the first time, this is an explanation that makes sense to me. While it seemed to me like there was no overhead of printing copies of a game and distributing it to stores, there is a major hidden cost that didn't exist when the games were originally released. If this is the case, I'm still unhappy living in NA with no Mega Man 2, but at least I'm no longer baffled about the reasons. If Nintendo could be less secretive and quit hiding their motives behind BS marketing speak, I'd have way less reason to complain.
But I still wanna play my favourite games.

Re: WiiWare vs Xbox Live Arcade - Fight!

whalleywhat

I think Devs frustrations with XBLA goes way beyond just MS's cut of the profits. Keep in mind that XBL is a closed service, so a lot of the demos are only available to people who pay for XBL Gold. I'm not sure if this is the same for game purchases, or if it's all available to Silver subscribers, but a lot of those games are based on adding online multiplayer to old titles, and only Gold subscribers can play online. Also, XBLA has a really strict certification process, so it's possible that you could a put a ton of time into making a game only to have it rejected by MS. That's gonna lose you a lot more money than only getting 35% of the cut on sales.
