Well, it won't be too big a problem for me, since I plan on keeping my VC stuff on my Wii for the most part. However, this reinforces my decision to not transfer much of anything at all.
@datamonkey They're timing their releases instead of re-releasing everything at once. You see if they just plop the entire VC library at once, then Nintendo and, more importantly 3rd parties, have to compete with Nintendo's legacy. If there's a bunch of classic games all at once put onto the service, it'll be really hard for the new guy to get any attention. Meanwhile, Nintendo likes money, so of course they'll put stuff on there. It's a very delicate balance, to be honest.
@hiptanaka Yeah, if anyone doesn't take advantage of that I'll be very confused.
As for me, I'll get F-Zero and Punch-Out!! since I haven't gotten those yet, and I'll get Super Metroid and Kirby's Adventure again because 30 cents is absolutely nothing.
Good review. Maybe I'll try it out when I don't have much to play.
@daznsaz Last time I checked, 6 out of 10 isn't a bad score. It's an OK gaming experience. It's a game that can be quite enjoyable, but has some hefty faults.
For what it's worth, I do see the perspective. Some find hunting as a sport to be morally wrong. There's no activities considered sport in the real world that condone the acts seen in Madworld, so it's not really supporting anything that actually exists. Meanwhile, hunting games do.
@Bankai There's Madworld, a game about murdering people. There's also Manhunt. Same premise, but less humorous in its approach. I don't see you getting up in arms about those.
@Pikachupwnage The way the story works means your way of exploring the story is by getting the different endings. Basically, there's only one real ending in the game, but you've got to play through other storylines to get to it. It's not like other games with multiple endings like Chrono Trigger. If you want to know more about it, I suggest you read the Gameasutra article.
It's basically narrative as gameplay. There's nothing like it except its predecessor.
@Slapshot For what it's worth, NintendoLand seems to be the only game that really gives any confusion. The average consumer won't be put off by the controller options with NSMBU, and for a lot of Nintendo's franchises I doubt that will be the case either, at least with their two biggest ones in Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Pretty much every game that seems to incorporate multiplayer on the Wii U itself uses the Pro controller or the standard Wii remote, except for NintendoLand. The options will go away and be streamlined in a few years when you can't buy the older stuff anymore.
Nintendo's biggest problem lies in its lack of a killer app. This is the first time I can think of besides the 3DS that didn't have one. It could have been ZombiU, but that game was just too polarizing and full of issues to be it. Mario isn't a killer app for most people unless if it's something along the calibur of Mario Galaxy or 64. NintendoLand is a minigame collection (albeit and amazing minigame collection). Frankly, the 3rd party games are definitely better and more engrossing than what Nintendo put out. Thing is, people already have those games on other consoles for the most part, so the value of being able to play game of the year contenders like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Batman and COD day 1 is lost.
Also, it's not like I've seen a ton of Wii U advertising, so I wouldn't say it's doing badly. Under expectations, yes, but not badly. I think it's a good idea too, because even with Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 and Game and Wario on the horizon, there isn't much for Nintendo to advertise yet. Besides, those aren't exactly games that entice people who don't own the system; they entice people who already own the system.
Additionally, I really question why Nintendo even bothered to put out a basic set. People will always go for the one that comes with a free game, more memory, more accessories and a digital promotion, especially when the difference is only $50.
On another note, I'm not seeing how the Wii U is complex in terms of its interface. In regards to its controller options then yes, it makes sense, but when it comes to the gamepad and the UI it's pretty simple. I've had half a dozen friends over for NintendoLand and none of them, my family members nor myself have had complications in understanding it.
I do wish there were more rewards, but that's about it. In terms of who won, I generally agree (especially Ubisoft, wow did they have an incredible year. Especially if you look away from Nintendo) or at the very least can easily understand why such perspective was taken.
@GreenDream 0_o You took my list right out of my mouth! Except for NightSky (I'm voting for Cave Story, but dang, that's really close, especially considering same publisher and everything).
@justinj42 Really? Maybe you're not turning fast enough. What you're supposed to do is pick the direction you're supposed to turn in before you turn. You know, like in Pac-Man. I've found the sense of control to be perfect.
@X-Factor I love when I see someone from Nintendolife right above me. It makes me want to play the level again and kick their butt! Even though they won't know I kicked their butt. It's pretty great.
@CanisWolfred I understand, but it just seems like an odd thing to omit, especially since there's only 5 games listed and one of them is also on 3DS. Actually, it was more just so people actually remembered that the game came out this year. I know it will lose pretty heavily to Pokemon, but hey, nothing wrong with trying.
Yep, it's a pretty wonderful game. I've been loving it. I especially love the high score implementation. It reminds me of Pac Man Championship Edition DX.
How in the world is there no Devil Survivor 2 on DS retail?! I understand this site is European based, but there's Xenoblade there, and that came out last year for you guys, so I'm having a hard time understanding why it's not listed. I get that it's all about suggestions, but still.
A sale on a Nintendo console?! It really is the end of the world!
Anyway, this looks like an awesome week. The option to get all 6 Bit Trip games for $15 is absolutely crazy, too. That's an incredible price. I know I'll be getting EscapeVector.
You guys do realize that bankruptcy doesn't equal going out of business, right? This just means that the debtholders have access to THQ's assets for the use of reimbursment.
In other words, this isn't liquidation. We won't be seeing THQ selling their properties to other companies, at least not yet.
So Capcom's strategy was to make us hate them all year and then to throw this at us right at the end? Well, it looks great and it's free, so I'll give it a go.
This is beyond stupid. Why in the world would they do this? Kids could just, oh I don't know, stay up late. It wouldn't be uncommon. All this is doing is making the convenience bad for consumers that just want to get a game.
What @csad said. This is easily my favorite game this year, and I doubt that'd be the case had I not played 999. I understand the approach, seeing as how this is a European site, but the game is drastically better when played after its predecessor to a point of the story from being "really great" to "the best story to grace the gaming medium".
I see no problem with this. Or with any other future platforms that get rid of features over time. It's not like Nintendo is going to stop making regular Wii's. They'll just have more options around.
@DarkKnight to make it affordable and to make Nintendo as much money as possible. The audience wanting this thing will not care about stuff like online features. Heck, they may not even be able to afford it. They probably won't have stuff like Netflix. This acts as an affordable thing to have, since Wii games are so cheap now. I can't tell you how many homes I've went to that own Wii's but don't use them for anything but Just Dance and Wii Sports.
If people want to play Wii games online or utilize features like VC, then they will buy a normal Wii. That stuff will be on their minds. Or heck, they'll buy a Wii U.
Guys, this isn't made with you in mind. This is made for the ultimate casual consumer who doesn't care about online or any of that other stuff. If they buy a Wii, they'll only use it to play Just Dance or Wii Sports. Either that, or it's made in mind for kids.
Either way, it seems like it will be able to do its job of playing Wii games. Nothing more, nothing less. Although missing out on Virtual Console is unfortunate, most people that would think about getting this anyway wouldn't care in the first place.
So a game, that's been running on an engine that has been improved over time that has been utilized on 2 consoles for the past 5 years, wouldn't run as well on its first go at a new one? That doesn't surprise me much, to be honest. And heck, from the videos I have seen of the Wii U version, I honestly can't tell the difference.
Part of why the Wii was able to succeed was because it wasn't directly competing with Microsoft and Sony. The experiences on the system were just so different than the others. If gamers wanted to get the best range of gaming in their lives, they had to own a Wii and a 360 or PS3, which is a big part of why it outsold those system by about 20 million units.
I have no qualms with the header statement. As for what the guy says in full, eeeehhhhhh. He doesn't totally get it, but I agree that by not directly competing, it'll allow it to find it's own stride.
I can see why Nintendo did this, and there's definitely pros and cons to the situation. It's worth noting that the memory the WiiU uses is flash memory, which is substantially faster than other forms out there, so that's a plus. I'd probably just use it for smaller games anyway, since I buy pretty much all of my games in physical form. Plus, hardrives are pretty cheap now, so this allows for people to choose how much storage they want.
From a business perspective, I don't think this is a good idea. When people are deciding whether to buy a game on a system, one of the factors that comes into play is whether it will boost their gamerscore/trophy list up or not. There were lots of people that bought Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward on Vita rather than 3DS because it offered trophy support. For something so easy to integrate, this doesn't seem very smart of Nintendo.
Somebody's a bit late to the party. I've known about this for over a week. Anyways, this one happened to me a day after I got it. 12 hours down the drain. Still, I beat it all the way through and it is an absolute masterpiece. Don't miss out on it because of this. @ouroborous Considering that this is a direct sequel to the DS version (999) then you should play it because it's awesome rather than becuase it is an alternative. The only other version of this game is on the Vita (which doesn't seem to have these glitches.)
Based on the demo it seemed quality. It's not my cup of tea, but it's quality, and there are few quality games for the demographic this game reaches out to. I'm fine with more of these.
So I'll take that this doesn't have rumble then? @HarmoKnight I'm pretty sure it was better on 360 because it wasn't full of glitches and framerate issues. Granted, I am a much bigger fan of the 360 controller anyway, so whatevs.
