Re: Soapbox: We Like To Grumble, But Nintendo Switch Online Is Actually A Very Generous Offer

kmpyj

@Syrek24 "Good retort, I guess? Comments like yours more or less confirm my frustrations in regards to interacting with others on the internet. Baseless insults aimed to get under another’s skin. Really petty of you."

I don't condone people insulting others over an opinion, but I have to ask what did you expect people to say when you yourself say stuff like "we have a bunch of grown adults whining and nashing their teeth in protest?" Saying stuff like that only adds more fuel to the fire rather than putting it out. I just find it hypocritical for you to be cool with calling others whiny babies, but when someone else calls you one you claim it is a baseless, petty retort.

Re: Niantic Is Facing a Class-Action Lawsuit Over Pokémon GO Fest

kmpyj

Believe me, I truly understand the upset this guy, and many others had. You travel out far for an event, it turned out to be a disaster, and you felt like you wasted your money.

But I just don't see this lawsuit going anywhere in their favor. With the exception of some circumstances, no company is responsible for your travel costs. If I went to EVO to compete in a tourney and for some reason the tournament was canceled, at most, I should be refunded for the tickets for the event itself. In no way would they be responsible for any other means I took to get there. It's not their fault that I needed to take a plane. For all I know, some of the attendees could be in walking distance. What about them and their experience? Should they sue for pain and suffering because their feet hurt? Ridiculous.

Re: Stardock CEO Says Nintendo Switch Doesn't Need Third Party Support To Succeed

kmpyj

Um, yeah the Switch needs third party support. Clearly this guy wasn't paying attention to the Wii U (one of the many reasons why it sold poorly). If we were to strip away every third party title from the Switch, you'd be left with 1 2 Switch, Zelda and Snipperclips, with Mario Kart 8 dropping in 4 days. Next game release wouldn't be until late Spring with Arms. No Shovel Knight, no Snake Pass, no USF2, no SMT, etc.

That being said, I don't understand why Nintendo fans take the term "X console needs Y" too literal. Of course a console's success isn't going to be based on one thing; there would be many factors as to why it succeeded (or flopped). A "minor" problem by itself can be passable, but if there is a number of "minor" problems, than it can cause a much bigger problem overall.

Re: Project Sonic 2017's Official Title Is Sonic Forces

kmpyj

I like the approach Sega is taking with Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. Both games Imo would appeal to both of their massively divided fanbase (specifically the classic fans vs the modern fans). I would argue Sonic Mania would mostly appeal to classic fans, while Sonic Forces would appeal to modern fans. It's a win-win really. As for me, as long as Sonic Forces plays similarly to Generations or Colors, then I have no complaint. That said, excited to try out both.

Re: Review: 1-2-Switch (Switch)

kmpyj

@Simbabbad
I agree price shouldn't be the main focus, but it IS very relevant in a review. If the reviewer feels as though the game isn't worth it's asking price (due to various reasons), then they have every right to hold that opinion. Reviewers are looking for the value in games, which means they're are going to review a $5 game (which they would expect less of) much differently than they would a $50 game (which they would expect more of). It's all about content. Which is why games like Snipperclips are priced at $20, and games like Breath of the Wild are priced at $60. So whenever consumers buy a game that is priced at $50-$60 and either the quality, quantity, or both are not up to par, it can leave a very bitter taste in many's mouths.

Like last year when Street Fighter V launch. The game came out bare bones; missing single player content, and had a very rocking online server from which the entire game ran on. You'd frequently get disconnected which stopped you in the middle of whatever you where doing, and you couldn't verse CPUs in vs mode. This game launched at $60, and was completely chewed out by it's own community. Today it's better than where it had initially started, but at a price. If you want the complete roster thus far, you would have to spend an addition $60 to have both Season Passes, unless you want to grind months for fight money. That's a whooping $120. It's because of it's lacking content and price point (and other things such as balance patches) that SFV has been receiving such negative feedback. Which is crazy because the game (based on gameplay alone) is fun.

Re: Soapbox: The Switch Presentation Was Good, but Not Perfect

kmpyj

I think my only problem with the presentation was the lack of launch titles shown. I think so far they only confirmed 2 I believe, and only one of them I actually care about (being Zelda). Everything else shown either didn't have a release date, or it wasn't a launch title.

I'd like to believe that 2 launch games isn't all they have to offer, so here's hoping for more launch announces. That being said, the games the Switch has coming to it looks very promising.

Re: Persona 5 Will Not Be Coming to the Switch

kmpyj

I'm not really surprised by this at all. Did anyone really expect this? Persona 5 is only on PS3/PS4, with no plans or mentions of an Xbox One port, nor a PC port. So yeah it wouldn't make sense to expect one on the Switch. And this doesn't really spell out doom and gloom either, considering this is most likely a third party partnership deal on sony's end. I appreciate that fact that he was upfront with it, instead of being misleading. That said, I'm still hyped for Persona 5 later this year.

Re: Feature: Hopes and Dreams for Nintendo's 2017

kmpyj

@capitalism
I think whenever people shout out "doom" for Nintendo, I think they're mostly referring to their home console division. The first 4 things you listed has nothing to do with their home consoles (with a minor exception to amiibos), and this may have people believing Nintendo just simply can't captivate on their home consoles because ever since the SNES, Nintendo has been losing it's fanbase with each new home console installment (with the exception of the Wii). Side note, I pretty much agree with everything else though.

Getting on topic, I'm optimistic for the Switch. It's key selling point (the whole hybrid concept) to me sounds very interesting, and something I can see myself using considering I travel a lot.

My only wishes for Nintendo this year, and throughout the rest of the Switch's run is:

1. Market, Market, MARKET! Let people know this thing exist, and let it be known what it is capable of, which is something that the other consoles can't do without additional means (like playstation now).

2. A Strong Library of First Party Games/Exclusives. Nintendo is usually known to deliver with this one, but during the Wii U's run, the consistent droughts made the console feel a bit dry between releases. If the Switch does receive games that would have been only on the 3DS or Wii U, than I think it will mostly eliminate that problem.

3. Third Party Support. Anyone who seriously believes Nintendo doesn't need this is very delusional.

4. A Solid UI and other features. Things like quickly accessing menus, and features like voice chat/party chat and on screen notifications.

If these 4 things happened in some way, shape, or form, then I can see the Nintendo Switch having a great run. But of course, this is just all of my opinions.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Wii U Production Is Coming To A Close

kmpyj

@BiasedSonyFan
When the statement was brought up "you pay a bit less, but you get way less in return" (in regards to PS4), the comment I said in response was emphasizing the lack of games releasing at a time on Wii U. I bought a Wii U obviously for Nintendo exclusives, but I would've hope for third party support. And to be fair, Nintendo did give a list of third party companies on board with Wii U, and promised third party support. So I was kind of justified in expecting third party.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Wii U Production Is Coming To A Close

@jimi

"Enjoy your day one patches and buggy games and copy+paste fests and dumbed down AAA-budget-only games and last gen ports."

I won't disagree with you on day one patches. As a matter of fact, I said it was cancer. And whenever there is a game that launches buggy or bare bones I speak with my wallet and won't buy it till it's either fixed or theres a price cut. I do this with all platforms.

"And you have to even re-buy your digital purchaes almost all the time including even emulated games. Your old games do not work anymore."

Last I checked, Wii U owners have to buy their old games via virtual console as well... Not to mention there are no cross-buy options for said games (like buy one on Wii U, get it on 3DS). Wii U does have Wii backwards compatibility which is great, but it lacks gamecube controller support. So that's why my Wii still hasn't left my tv stand.

"Oh, you have to pay a monthly fee now. Not for proper dedicated servers, but for the allowance to play peer-to-peer games."

And I don't defend that either. Free online was one of the biggest things I used to convince others to buy a Wii U during 2013 when PS4 and X1 dropped.

"So tell me - would you seriously say that the PS4 is cheaper?"

No, I wouldn't say it is cheaper. To me, a gaming PC is much more cheaper in the long run. There is no next PC platform to buy in order to play current gen games, most problems that occur with PCs can be easily troubleshooted or replaced, online cost only reflects your internet bill, and download speeds and online play fully utilizes your true internet connection. Not to mention the steam sales are an absolute treat, and PC gamers are now getting all of X1 future titles.

"You pay a bit less, but you get way less in return."

That sounds like a Wii U to me. I paid $300 for a console to drop games every 3-5 months with no third party support. That's not to say the Wii U doesn't have great games (Smash 4, TMS#FE, Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, and Pokken to name a few), but the constant droughts between releases, and the lack of third party support killed it for me.

"There could be improvements of course, but for the most part it's actually well designed. It makes sense when you think about it. And everything simply WORKS."

Um...no. If that gamepad breaks it's all over. You can't navigate settings without it, and you can't buy one in the stores separately. Your only options is to fix it yourself, or send it to nintendo for repairing. If neither, than your left with a broken controller, and a perfectly fine console with settings/features you can't access. That is not a good design choice. I'm optimistic for the Switch because it looks like everything the Wii U could've and should've been. The merging of the console and handheld devision will mostly likely decrease the number of droughts even if there is no third party support.

The whole point of my original post is pointing out that being too positive is just as bad as being too negative. I used PS4 as a comparison. Which is funny because PS4 isn't even my favorite platform this gen. That would be the 3DS.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Wii U Production Is Coming To A Close

kmpyj

@Lucina I think being overly positive is just as bad as being negative.

A Nintendo fan criticizing Nintendo doesn't make them a non-Nintendo fan or a "Pretendo," it makes them a critical consumer. Most gamers are looking for a console to supply all of their gaming fixes. This is very apparent throughout this console generation. The only people who bought a Wii U are Nintendo faithfuls, or gamers wanting insert exclusive here. Everyone else opted for a PS4, X1, or PC. Reason? Is it power? Perhaps. Or maybe it's the constant stream of games releasing month after month, whereas Wii U gets a major title once every 3-5 months. On paper, a PS4 would sound like a much better buy than Wii U to most gamers. It doesn't matter if the games they have are not your cup of tea, to the vast majority it is (and the sales of PS4 alone is proof of this). I laugh every time a Nintendo fan says "enjoy your day one patches and FPS!" While I agree that most day one patches are cancer, not every PS4 game is a FPS. At the end of this month FF15 drops. I got to try PSVR and enjoyed it, and I've been playing Blazblue Central Fiction like a religion.

I don't care about power (only when it is absolutely necessary). Otherwise I would be greatly excited for PS4 Pro or Xbox Scorpio (or really I would be PC Master Race Elitist) I want Nintendo to do well, but that doesn't mean imma go "yeah" to everything they do.

Side note I am very optimistic for the Switch.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Wii U Production Is Coming To A Close

kmpyj

Sad to say, but this was only going to happen eventually. 2015 to 2016 made this very apparent.

They were only beating around a dead horse. They failed to convince people to buy the console while it was new, it would only be much harder to convince people with the latest console around the corner. Especially if the Switch has a number of popular Wii U titles as well (Mario Kart, Splatoon, Smash 4 to name a few). Just would be a waste of resources.

Re: Weirdness: Mario Kart 8 Contains Hidden Swearing

kmpyj

Obviously he has this much time on his hands. What else is a Wii U owner to do with such little games this holiday season?

But in all seriousness, I don't think he spent hours upon hours looking for these things. He probably got lucky and found the right file and (as he said) thought those Miis sound like high pitch people with their voices reversed and got curious. Won't lie, I probably would have done the same thing if I found those files and came to the same conclusions (provided I even copied the game to my computer in the first place).
