@Banjo- This is opinion that I'm not in the mood to debate online. But sure, it would be nice if this were free, and people should vote with their wallet if they object.
The objective fact, though, is that Nintendo is far from the only company that charges extra for making the game look a bit better.
I paid the $5, because I'm a sucker. I've left some other games un-upgraded, at least so far.
The way I see it, AdHoc is at least somewhat to blame for not disclosing this ahead of time. The rest isn't known. Meanwhile, there are many other games I can play instead, since I was only being pulled in by the hype anyway.
Nintendo does get some blame here, but AdHoc Studio does look rather suspicious in this mess. Why stay silent about this until the last possible minute?
@Friendly 's (later) point that this might just be AdHoc only shipping one worldwide version to meet one region's rules does seem plausible in that context. (Though I then wonder what's up with PlayStation.)
For anyone who doesn't know, Tetris 99 and Tetris Effect (at least) have settings to make accidental diagonals harder with a D-pad. I forget what they are offhand, but they were kind of deep in the settings.
The settings helped for me playing on the Switch pro controller in both games. An 8BitDo (Pro+) was better still, though.
A reason for physical game collectors to care might be if these are up to date with newer patches. I haven't dug in much, but FF7 might have a newer version out (1.0.3) than what is on the old cartridge (1.0.2_5).
If I get to use one of the US$50 Switch Game Vouchers for it, then I think I'll get the set. Otherwise I'll go through some of my backlog first (so maybe never).
It'd be nice if the Switch 2 supported "installing" content off of the card onto internal storage to cover situations like this for people who want the game on the card they buy.
When a company doesn't offer an option to upgrade, I think the logical response is to avoid buying their games until you're going to get around to playing them, ideally at a deep discount. You get the best version of a game when you play it, and they don't profit extra off of overly greedy behavior.

@Banjo- Sega and Atlus wave from the corner where you have to pay full price for the resolution upgrade.

Re: Rumour: Switch Online GameCube Releases Might Have Been Leaked
Pikmin 2 doesn't make much sense to me (since it's still for sale), but a little incongruency makes the rumor more plausible.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 Bundle Confirmed For Switch, Launching October
So, this being a first-party Switch 1 game, that means we should be able to use one of those (still available) Switch Game Vouchers on it, right?
