Re: Nintendo Comments On How It's Handling Joy-Con Drift

gergelyv

@BeefsoundMagnus It's very annoying.

The Switch is the most premium (expensive) console at the moment if you look at total cost of ownership, simply because the 1st party titles are freaking expensive and their prices never go down (compared to all other platforms where new titles start to have deep sales within months). The Joy-Con is also an expensive controller.

And I also agree that Nintendo's first party titles have a unique appeal, and I did buy in to this premium platform. BUT then the customer care should also be up to par. This issue should be handled with very efficient free repairs all over the world, not just America.

Re: Android 10 Now Supports The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

The whole Switch concept could be generalized to phones and tablets. When Switch was just a rumour, I was kind of hoping that it would not even be an actual device, but Nintendo would team up with Apple and create something that allows you to attach Joy-Con like controllers to iPhones and iPads.

I say Apple because
1. It would probably be a nightmare to try and support all the million Androids. The more limited iPhone + iPad lineup is more realistic.
2. iOS devices have insane raw power, especially their CPUs. They are comparable to average to good laptops. And that power is not really tapped by anything today, really.

But I also have to admit that it would be somewhat clunky to always mess with your iPhone and controllers, and there may be an important incoming call while you play, etc.

@Ralek85 Ray-tracing is great, it is the first really relevant technology in games for a long while. You know, lights and shadows and reflections that start looking realistic and are finally not all "fake."

On the other hand, ray-tracing is currently very power hungry, so I don't see it appearing in a handheld / hybrid (i.e. Switch Pro or Switch successor) for years and years. I'm even skeptical about the kind of ray-tracing we will get in PS5. It currently needs a high-end desktop GPU on PC.

Me, I can't see myself buying probaby any multiplat 3rd party AAA games for Switch (or Pro, or Switch 2). Sure, playing an AAA game on the toilet might sound enticing, but the compromise in graphics is too much for me. And most multiplat AAAs I don't find exciting anyway. Maybe-maybe ray-tracing can change this in the future, Control looks sexy on PC. I mean on a PC that is worth as much as several of my internal organs.

The Switch will stay relevant for me as long as there are games like BOTW 2, and new quality indies like Celeste or Hollow Knight or Stardew Valley or INSIDE, etc.

Honestly, I like the graphics of all of the above titles more than most AAAs. Graphics is as much about artwork and aesthetics and style as "image quality" and tech. 4k is totally stupid for a home console for most, you (most, normal people) just don't have a TV that is big and close enough for 4K to make any sense at all vs full HD. Personally I'd be okay with 720p even, my TV is a little bit far away.

Ray-tracing could make or break PS5 for me: if it is good enough, I might get interested. Otherwise, I'll be a late adopter, just like I was with the PS4, and will only go for a PS5 when there will be lots of great games already, for great prices.

Re: Untitled Goose Game Developer Reveals The Cheeky Name They Almost Used

@Moroboshi876
Both time and money are resources. Somehow "hardcode" gamers pretend that time isn't a resource, and the more time they can spend, the better. I'm actually afraid to buy and/or start any "big" games, as I'm not sure I'll ever have the time to finish them.

I also don't have unlimited money, but money doesn't matter all that much, up to certain limits: new AAA games are kind of expensive for me, so a new AAA game must really be very compelling for me to buy it. (Same with all the Nintendo AAA games that remain expensive forever.)

The last game I finished was another short game, Inside. I loved it, it was beautiful, fun, and surprising, and it was for free. And it didn't eat up too much of my time. Checked all the right boxes.

With Untitled Goose Game, it looked so much fun that I just had to buy it at launch. It has become one of those games that I buy and my kids play, at least so far.

Re: Ori And The Blind Forest "Animates A Bit Smoother" On Nintendo Switch

gergelyv

Just to split hairs: it's worth reading the developers words carefully. He didn't say that the game would be 60 FPS in general on Switch, nor did he say that it was 30 FPS in general on other platforms. He was specifically talking about sprite (character) animations. I'm pretty sure that in the case of Ori, it is somehow separate from overall FPS or something.

Re: Video: Get A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The Puzzles And Gameplay Of Trine 4

@aznable I am put off by the colors, honestly. There are just too many of them, and too many effects, everything is super busy and shiny and glowing and sparking, etc. If done well, this can work for goofy stylized games like Rayman, but with the somewhat more realistic characters and environmental elements in Trine games, I just don't like it. Too little taste, and too much of everything else.

Contrast with another indie game, Hollow Knight, for example: HK is much more restrained, and more consistent, and in my opinion, so much more tasteful.

I suspect that the designers of Trine could do better as well, and the graphics in the Trine games was done this way because of the (perceived) expectations of the audience that often doesn't have too much taste, and think "good graphics" means lots of colors, many effects everywhere, high resolution, and stuff like that. Good graphics is, before all, is good taste.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Gives Its Technical Analysis Of Astral Chain On Switch

gergelyv

@Barbara001 Hardware wise, the Switch is like a mediocre mobile phone from several years ago. It IS a technical marvel to get solid ports of some modern multiplatform games, and there always will be compromises is resolution, effects, etc. to make it happen. Similarly, top of the line Switch games will be inferior in these aspoects. The raw performance is way, way weaker on the Switch than PS4 or Xbox1, let alone "serious" (and expensive) gaming PCs.

I don't think DF are condescending. The fact that they test Switch games all the time means they recognize the relevance of the platform, that they don't think performance is everything, etc.

Re: Random: Not All Joy-Con Are Created Equal

gergelyv

I've just started thinking that I consider the Switch crap now, since all my Joy-Cons malfunction. I prefer consoles over PC gaming partly because of the convenience of controllers on consoles. Getting my controllers working with my PC can be fiddly. With the Switch, my controllers are hopeless. And with no free repairs in EU, my option would be to repair or buy new ones for €€€. With the most expensive (default) controllers maybe ever? On the paltform where even old games are sold at very high prices. The controllers that also have a disconnect issue and also creak. It's a disgrace. I'm very unhappy, free repairs might alleviate this a bit but the damage to the brand (at least in my eye) is already done.

Re: Nintendo Download: 17th January (Europe)

Nintendo eshop discounts are sad. Just take a look at the PS Store, where huge games get very convincing discounts very regularly. I see that the hybrid nature of the Switch is sexy, but I bought a PS4 as well recently, and I can hardly imagine buying any more Switch games. I buy games that are on sale almost exclusively.

Re: Just How Good Is The Nvidia Shield Wii Emulator, And What Does It Mean For Switch Owners?

gergelyv

Honestly, I ran to buy my Switch after being blown away by BOTW on CEMU. Even after experiencing BOTW on the Switch, I sometimes read news about CEMU and find it interesting that I could play it at higer resolution and FPS if I wanted too. Today, I have my WiiU and Switch with many games bought, especially Nintendo games. I introduce my kids to gaming mostly through Nintendo's games. And I enjoy Wii games in HD on Dolphin. If you ask me whether or not I paid for those Wii games, I'll tell you it is none of your business. Even if I hadn't pay for them, I'd refuse to feel guilty. If I hadn't paid for them, would it be in Nintendo's interest to see me in jail? Would I be more useful for them, would I and my family spend more or less on Nintendo products that way?

Am I Nintendo's enemy or friend? Am I evil or a saint? Maybe, just maybe neither? Maybe there are shades different from both black and white?

Re: Learn How To Code Your Own Games With FUZE4 Nintendo Switch Later This Year

I also really wonder how typing will work. I dislike typing anything on the Switch touchscreen, even a password, it's just not what it is designed for. The Joy-Cons are in the way, the whole thing is too large, etc. I'm also skeptical about external keyboards. Would be nice if the devs could share their side of this. Honestly, I don't yet see why they chose the Switch.
