I love Odama... it would be great with Wii U's integrated Microphone, too. Too bad Nintendo hasn't thus far shown ANY interest in making technological updates for their classic games. 'Tis a bloomin' shame.
NSMBW had some of the best level design I've seen in any video game ever. Watching those "Super Skills" videos made that plenty clear (my personal favorite being the one where three characters on Yoshis take Luigi and all hit the finish line without ever letting him touch the ground, despite numerous passes back and forth.) So few developers have the skill to make such perfectly tuned games. If this is more of the same, I won't be disappointed in the least.
@James: "One of the last 3DS games." That would hurt. Honestly, my hope is for them to drop 3DS development and cut the time in half. But we'll see. I still play Brawl almost daily with my friends, so I'm set for now, but still... the things I would do for a new Smash. I'm already set with the fact that it's going to be a long time coming, but I hope it's out a few years before this current/next (3DS/Wii U) generation of Nintendo consoles has run its course.
I thought we already knew this. He said several times he had no idea about the game before Iwata opened his big mouth on stage. We also know from history that every Smash Bros. game has taken several years to develop and we know he's said that he wants to try new things with this one, wants to be extra careful in balancing this one, and wouldn't even begin to look at development until Kid Icarus was completely finished and distributed, which was only a month or two ago.
We've known for a while that we've got at least 2 or 3 years to wait.
Got to be $350. I wouldn't pay $400. But I do expect a Game Pad, a Pro controller, a Wii Remote +, a nunchuck and Nintendo Land all in the box along with the console and necessary cables. I expect the eShop to be open from day 1 with the FULL Wii VC and WiiWare catalogues as well as Wii U-specific games. Netflix, Amazon, Skype and other apps and utilities should be available and fully-functional out of the box, too.
If Nintendo wants to make a dent in the hardcore market while still keeping the casual one, they're going to have to impress people on every level from the time they open the box from the price to the inclusions to the functionality.
It's about 3 points too many. Your "death from falling" height is WAY too short, as is the distance you can jump, and the movement speed is downright sluggish. It's as close to unplayable as anything Nintendo has ever produced.
Donkey Kong Jr. Math is a better game. By a full 2 points.
I'd buy either... but I REALLY hope if they do A Link to the Past, that they'll recreate it as a 3D Zelda, with maybe the original 16-bit version also on the cart. I know it would take a LOT more time and work from them, but it would be exciting and new enough to satisfy those wanting a brand new Zelda, but familiar enough to please fans of the classic.
Couldn't they very easily give us Peach and Toad like SMB2? Or Wario and Waluigi? Or Toad and Toadette? Or Toad and Toadsworth? Why two of the same Toads with different colors? LAME.
Whatever I'll still buy it and think it's flipping amazing.
But with 6 player support, you could have had the same thing. Done the assymetrical stuff when you wanted or have two teams of three, each with two "regular" and one "master" players. Disappointment.
@BulbasaurusRex: He was saying that because Nicalis acted as a middleman, the only information Nigoro was getting was through those Skype meetings. They had to "believe" (put their trust in) in Nicalis alone to take care of things instead of being able to be on top of the requirements themselves. That seems to be why the cancellation came so late and as a surprise even to Nigoro.
Not that difficult to get. The sentence structure and the separation of clauses through the use of em dashes made it pretty clear he was referring to believing in Nicalis, not believing in lot-checks. Watch thine own understanding of the language before thou criticizeth another's.
The Jason Rohrer Anthology might be my favorite thing on my 3DS. I didn't even know this existed, but with that description and that name and that title, I'm hyped now.
Super Mario 3D Land embraced the 3 in its name and ran with the Tanooki theme. New Super Mario Bros. 2 should do the same and embrace the 2. No stomp-kills, unless (maybe) they maintain Mario's mid-air butt stomp.
This reminds me of when Last Story was first teased. Just the 30-second background music loop on the teaser site was enough to get me hyped for the game. Lather, rinse, repeat.
"Nicalis says the game will come to the 3DS eShop first, but it's hoping to have the Wii U version ready in time for the system's launch later this year."
Am I the only one who's kind of bothered by the completely flat, unconvincing audience members and background characters in an otherwise impressively stylized 3D game? They're just jarring and once I notice them, I can't see anything but how horribly they clash with the rest of the game.
@Nintendoftw: They won't disappoint Nintendo fans as long as Nintendo fans aren't disappointed. And so far, they don't seem to be. As far as the capabilities of the console, the Wii U is very innovative. Innovation isn't related to being "better" than the competition at what the competition does. Innovation involves doing something the competitions DOESN'T do. And so far, that's exactly what they're doing. And it's not garbage, nor is is a generation behind. It's a generation ahead and when it launches, it will be the most technologically advanced videogame system ever produced. And given that Sony and Microsoft have no announced plans for a follow-up to their current endeavors, it will be another year before those two catch up to Nintendo.
I'm not saying you should be praising Nintendo, by any means. No one needs to do that. But do think through your opinions before blasting them in caps lock. It just makes the site as a whole a friendlier place for everyone when we are all being thoughtful.
Everyone else has said the capabilities are above the current market. So they are. This is so early and it's a developer that, while respected, doesn't inspire awe, so I think we'll see a LOT more than current generation graphics before all's said. Starting next year, when more and more developers are designing exclusive Wii U games, rather than just porting across 3 consoles, we'll get the best looking games. Just have patience.
I'm sure this will never be seen by the staff under this pile of comments, but one of you guys (James, Corbie, Thomas... any newswriter) needs to interview someone about WHY games are suddenly being pulled off the shop faster than their being put up. I'd do the interview, myself, if I have the clout as a game journalist that you do.
But why is this happening? Are they paring down the shop so they can re-upload them during the Wii U's life? It can't be licensing issues since Sonic is owned by Sega entirely. Is there a cost to just having a game sit up there?
Until now, this hasn't bothered me except on a matter of principle. But these Sonic games are ones I would have downloaded eventually. So I feel like people really want to know why things like this are coming down.
This still looks great (it's Fire Emblem, of course it's great), but it's certainly more Japanese than previous installments have been.
Not that that's a bad thing just an observation. #1 on my Most Wanted list for obvious reasons (namely, FE being the best Nintendo series of all time).
I can only imagine he's just thinking that nothing can last forever and one day Nintendo will fall out of the video game market. It seems like he's banking his whole career on being able to say ,"I called it."
It looks like to ensure that happening, he's just going to "predict" their doom at every turn and when it finally happens he'll be the first to tell you all about how he was the only one who knew it all along.
@ThomasBW84: I have a journalism background, so I understand completely your need to post his opinions, especially when running counter to the statements of the majority. I'm wondering, though, WHY does he have the position and industry respect he does? He must have at some point proven some great insight into the gaming industry, but I haven't the foggiest idea when that might have been and I'm genuinely curious.
I just honestly want to know what this guy has ever been right about. I'm seriously not criticizing him or anything... I just have never read any of his predictions that came out correct. Yet he's an analyst that's constantly reported on, so there must be some reason why. I'm wondering what that reason is. Can anybody tell me?
Considering you'd go from staring at the TV to moving your head all the way down to glance at the controller and HOPE your eyes hit the "sweet spot," 3D would be a HORRIBLE idea...
Systems don't sell 500 million units when they launch, people. I'm as in love with the 3DS as any of you, but give the Vita time to sink into the market and it will do just fine. It's capitalism and it gives consumers options to have one, the other or the best of both worlds.
What I find most interesting in that is the comparison to DS... not 3DS. Does that mean the screen is pressure sensitive like the 3DS' should have been?

Missed opportunity. Would be very easy to implement for those who want it and wouldn't at all hurt those who don't just to have the option. Shame.
