These are my opinions on the power of the Wii U and it only offering current gen graphics. Cons: It will get outdated as soon as the next Sony and M$ consoles arrive Publishers wont often take the risk of downscaling big games to the less powerful Wii U. Publishers and devs won't often take the risk of making original games exclusive to the Wii U from previous experience with the Wii. There will be game droughts again as more games go to the more powerful systems. Watch the shovelware arrive in rather large amounts again like on the Wii
Pros: Games developed for the Wii U will cost less to make than games for the next Sony and M$ consoles. It will be a while before the new consoles come out, so games could find their audience on the Wii U which will lead to games continuing to be made for it, First party software will be awesome as always New ways to play could inspire many new franchises that can only be done on the Wii U.
I'm looking forward to the Wii U. Nintendo just don't have the resources to do another Gamecube like console where its just as powerful if not more so than the competition, especially if it flops sales wise, I would much prefer a more modest console with great exclusive Nintendo games than have them turn into another Sega. But it's not designed to be a hardcore console, and Nintendo should stop pretending that it is. It's a Nintendo core console sure, but it will hardly change the minds of Xbots to buy one of these instead of the new Xbox when it arrives. The best they can do is try and offer it to that market as a 2nd class console. Us Nintendo fans will buy it, no questions asked, and we will just have to see how much of the casual market will buy into this as well. I'm hoping not many. The last thing I want is a flood of cheap mini game shovelware rubbish crowding the system when there is so much awesome stuff that could be done with the gamepad and asymetrical gameplay.
My hope is that enough of the casual market that bought into the Wii have converted to Nintendo fans, and that will be enough to sustain the system. It need not surpass the Wii in terms of sales, and lets be honest, a LOT of those units would be set up to play Wii Sports and nothing else. But i do see it becoming a success. Besides, I really don't think the games market will see a successor to the PS4/Xbox720. If the cycle for their next consoles is as long as this one we could see many advances in streaming services and the like. Which would give Nintendo a great opportunity to come back in with another console at the end of the Wii U's life, and haflway through the other companies consoles life with a console on par or better, with more modern components, and a better idea where the future of gaming is going than the ones already on the market.
Wow what a rant. Sorry to anyone that god bored. This is just what I see in my minds eye. It could be way wrong. I really thought the Dreamcast would have given the PS2 a run for its money. Boy was I wrong there. The future isn't written. The only thing we can do is wait and see how it all turns out. In the meanwhile though, I'm going to be having a LOT of FUN with my Wii U, no matter the specs, just like I did with my Wii.
I kind of wish Nintendo would buy Level 5. They obviously love Nintendo platforms, and also they are great devs. Really looking forward to Ni No Kuni on the PS3 next year. It looks amazing. Just imagine if that was a Wii U title. Also the Layton games would would pretty well on the Wii U as well. Especially if they were downloadable games with new mysteries and puzzles to solve as DLC.
I don't think I will be buying the iOS games, however I am glad that they are not remakes of the games we have already. Kind of lessens the appeal of the original games. Just like having scribblenauts on iOS for really cheap but the DS/3DS/WiiU games seem very expensive by comparison and not as exclusive, and maybe just that little bit not as special any more.
Would love a HD remake. Then hope it sells millions to warrant a full sequel. I can not stress what a masterpiece this jrpg is. If a remake is in the works, every person must buy this game.
I defs want this game. But I do wish it was not an entry in the main series. I would have much preferred a DQVIII Journey of the Cursed King solo experience. That was my fave PS2 game.
Well I hope it sells enough to make them some money after all their troubles. But it was probably a silly choice to continue development on the WiiWare service.
These are the games that publishers need to bring to the west as full game eshop digital titles. I would gladly pay full retail price for premium games like this on the eshop as opposed to trying to hunt down a limited run retail copy.
It's a shame that the success in Japan isn't translating well to the west. Of course, having the amount of games released here as there is over there would help. Nintendo can't rely on western devs supporting the 3DS to any great degree. They need to be working with companies like XSEED that specialize in translating Japanese games and getting them to release them, or set up their own teams to bring the games over. I know focus groups seem to point to western gamers increasingly preferring western developed games, but that shouldn't translate to party game/mini game shovelware over here with the odd first party game, while Japan gets Project X Zone, Senran Kagura (sp?) and many other great looking games.
I believe him. I believe we will only see one New Super Mario Bros game for each system, as they are "evergreen" titles. But not only that, now with NSMB2 having DLC, it's a way to keep the original game fresh for years to come. I'm sure NSMBU will follow suit, and we could have new levels and add on modes for years to come, making the original games still a must for newcomers to the systems with extras down the line for those who want it.
However I do see them releasing perhaps another new 2D Mario game, say in the style of Yoshi's Island or Story, or some other spin off somewhere in a few years. It probably won't be what is considered now a "mainline" Mario game, but it could be the start of a new one. Who really knows. All I know is that people are crying out over Mario being over used. It's just an unusal time in the console cylce. NSMB hit the DS at it's peak, as did NSMBWii on the Wii. NSMB2 is released to get another bump in sales for the 3DS which it desperately needs, and at last, Nintendo will be launching a new system with a Mario game like we have all wanted since the N64. Yes they are all released fairly close together, but it will be years and years before we get a NSMB3 or at all, so I wouldnt be too worried about Mario being over used. Nintendo are using Mario as they need him, to sell the systems. And I couldnt be happier. 2 great Mario games on the 3DS already. It's brilliant.
not many to pick from that pile of dreck. Paper Mario, Layton, Pokemon BW2. I have my eye on the Adventure Time game. I really thought the 3DS would take off this year but without some more quality games coming, its just not going to happen.
Nintendo needs to release more games. 3rd parties arent stepping up to the plate, at least not in the west, so the 3DS really needs some big games to help sell this system, and they need to be coming much more frequently.
Yeah it will sell pretty well, but Nintendo have the wrong strategy here. I'm not calling for it to be cheaper, but it should be the exact rrp as the packaged version. If it was a download only game, then we could accept the price, but it's not. I was going to download it but now I'm not.
Its such a shame that DQX was made for Wii. If it was released 2 years ago, sure. But it's way too late in the game to be releasing it on Wii. I dont know how the whole online only part is going to go down either. Dragon Quest has always been a solo experience apart from IX which was local multiplayer. I would have much preferred a DQ8 like experience on the Wii. But such is life. I really would like some news on the WiiU version.
Needs GBA games on the VC stat. Needs more 1st party eShop originals Needs some sort of social games along the lines of Words with Friends and Draw Something. Not those exact games but surely Nintendo can come up with something similar with a unique twist to it. And yes the eShop needs some games that star their existing IP to be exclusive to the shop.
I know it sounds stupid but i feel kind of guilty about this as I have yet to pick up KH DDD. I really want it but money is a bit tight at the moment. I just hope this doesnt put any road blocks up for the Wii U version on DQX being released, the Wii U could do with a MMO like game in its infancy. I'm always up for more Dragon Quest.
Glad to have you at the helm. I really like the fact that people with so much passion for Nintendo today are people that had that same passion for Sega long ago. I feel exactly the same way.
Yeah some info on the Wii U version would go a long way. If this game launched within a year after the Wii U, it would add to the hype a lot. Which sadly the Wii U doesn't have much of outside Nintendo fans.
Why can't Nintendo see that what is happening in Japan and replicate it here. The 3DS is getting far more games released for it over there. Both eShop and retail. Everywhere else its just a trickle of must have games. We should be getting at least one high profile title a month backed up with good original eShop content. It's obvious that western devs arent making the most of it, so why can't Nintendo bring over some of the uinique and interesting Japanese games? Just because japanese games havent been the best selling games of late on home consoles doesnt mean that they cant be on a hand held. Especially if they release them on the eShop to eliminate some of the risk in bringing these titles over.
I know I cant wait to get my hands on a 3DS XL. Especially now that my right trigger button on my original one is starting to go a bit. But it would be nice to get some games coming out for it. I mean this year we have only really had Heroes of Ruin and Kingdom Hearts 3D so far. Thats just not good enough.
EB are notorious for putting games on the shelf that aren't supposed to be, and after you inspect said game for release date and display only stickers only to find none, you take it to the counter only to be told that they can't sell it to you, but you can pre order. Not a fan of EB at all.
This is the Kim of game that needs to be a premium digital only in the west. With more 3DS's connected to the Internet than any other Nintendo handheld before it, and with the incentives nintendo are apparently offering, what better candidate. It could turn a nice little profit if all manufacturing costs are taken out of the equation.
"Sticking to what you know leads to very short success" you say? going to focus on Sonic, Total War and Football Manager? Doesn't anyone else see the hypocrasy here?
Why would Sega want to focus on those franchises when it has the likes of NiGHTS, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star, JSR, Shenmue, Shining Force etc to fall back on? So many epic franchises, yet when they do go digging in the back catalogue we end up with a boring Shinobi game. Come on Sega. If you are going to go digital, bring back some Alex Kidd and Wonderboy titles or some Streets of Rage!
I can't see it looking bad blown up to a bigger size. Sure, the DSi XL was noticeable, but it wasn't horrible, and the 3DS has much more resolution than a normal DS. The only problem will be with playing regular ds games on the larger screen.
I can't wait for one of these babies. Transferring everything should be a breeze, including ambassador games. I'm not concerned about no second circle pad. I like that there is only one, now the system won't turn into a FPS magnet like the home consoles are. I love my DSiXL, I could fit it in my pocket. But mainly it went in my manbag. So no difference here. And I also really like the design. Nice and round.
Why is this a retail game? Should be either an eShop sequel or paid update. The first game had me playing it for quite a while before the novelty wore off. An update would have easily got me hooked again for a while. Totally not worthy of a retail release in my opinion.
I've wanted some of these games for a long time but they dont get released here in Australia. And even if they did, I'm not too interested in DS games any more. If I can import this from the UK fairly cheap I definately will buy it.
Nintendo had the same PR line with the 3DS. Talking about its supposed value. Reggie needs to drop the PR talk and go back to kicking a** and taking names and market this thing aggressively.

It's probably compatible with both, but really it should only be compatible with motion plus so more motion plus games are made.
