Re: Talking Point: The Emergence of Download-Only Retail Games

TheAdza

At the moment, the 3DS is kicking major butt in Japan. If games from there were to come over to the west, it's definitely better that they come on the eShop than not at all. Because it is doing so well there, that's where the games are being made, not in the west. Western devs are barely developing anything for the 3DS as they still have the mentality that western gamers prefer western games. It's just not true for handheld devices. The DS proved that. And while its quite a small market compared to the western first person shooter-a-thon that comprises the western home console market, I'm sure it's still quite viable, especially when released digitally only. And hopefully games like Unchained Blades and Code of Princess prove to publishers that some of these more niche type games are worth the effort in localizing, especially when they can have them as download only titles, saving money on the manufacture and shipping of costly cartridges and boxes and manuals.

There are problems, games being tied to a system instead of an account being a major one, but I don't really see a problem with the pricing of full price games on the eShop. Sure it might be worthwhile seeking out a cheaper retail version of the big Nintendo games like Mario instead of the download version, but for more niche titles, like jrpgs and the like, why shouldn't there be a premium price for these titles? They are games that aren't going to sell in the millions like the Mario's and Zelda's. They are games that are more likely to be enjoyed more by the more hardcore gamer with access to the Internet and credit cards, and more aimed at people who already pay premium prices for games, anime, manga, figures etc. Would cheaper prices be good? Of course. But you can see why they are priced the way they are. If we as gamers want the handheld market to continue to survive in this day and age of smart phone games, we all need to support moves like this. Especially for games of this caliber, games that can't be replicated on smart phones, and games that just wouldn't make sense playing on an iPhone.

It's not without its downside, but I fully support moves like this. And without it, the 3DS could have a very limited library of games without the Japanese games making their way over here.

Bring on more eShop only Japanese games I say.

Re: Pokémon X and Pokémon Y Caught In Worldwide Release This October

This looks so good. Sprites be damned. I'm glad we've seen the last of them. The best thing however will be the games that will inevitably follow in the coming years. The leap in graphics and speed from Diamond/Pearl to Black/White is pretty vast, imagine what years of tinkering with a full 3D engine will bring.

Also I'm still holding out hope for a Wii U Pokemon RPG/MMO but releasing a X/Y companion Tournament style game like Stadium or Battle Revolution for Wii U would be awesome as well.

Re: Renegade Kid Clarifies 3DS Piracy Comments

TheAdza

As above. I think if region locking was to go away piracy rates would drop. If the ease of transferring games from one platform to another (eg DS to 3DS and Wii to Wii U) became an easy process instead of the makeshift system in place today, it would fall again. If you put restrictions on what people can do, for whatever reason, there will be people out there trying to break them. I'm not saying that piracy is a good thing, of course it's bad when people who have access and the money to buy games go ahead and obtain an illegal copy, but people who are willing to shell out money for games but can't due to region locking and untransferable content, what is the other option? We don't buy it, no money made. We grab a rom, no money made. It's such a shame though that hacking to relieve restrictions leads to piracy but they keep making more and more restrictions so in the end, I really wish it hurt the platform holders instead of the devs that make games for them, but it doesn't, and it sucks, but what can we do? Nothing.

Re: Talking Point: Selling the Wii U Concept - The GamePad and eShop

TheAdza

MiiVerse is really really good. I don't know how they are going to advertise that as a selling point other than a Facebook/Twitter for games on Wii U, but it is definitely a highlight of my Wii U experience thus far. Sure it's a bit buggy now, but it is still a time waster and a fun one at that.

Re: Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition Dogged By Performance Issues

TheAdza

Frame rates are a big deal to me. So I will not be buying any of these big 3rd party games if they can't make the effort to get that up to par. Tekken Tag perhaps. AC3 seems ok. Even CoD might not be as silky smooth but it seems to be constant which is much better than stuttering and inconsistent. It is crazy logic that publishers go by. Lets port old games to the Wii U, make them not as good, and watch them not sell but blame the Nintendo userbase for not supporting core games. No publishers. Release new games for it, make them out perform the current gen, and then if they don't sell well, THEN have a bitch about the Nintendo fans.

Re: Review: Real Heroes Firefighter 3D (3DS)

TheAdza

Burning Rangers needs a HD update. I really loved that game but it needed a much more powerful system to run it than the Saturn. It wasn't a very pretty game, but it could have been. Plus full voice acting back in those days, coupled with some slick Anime scenes, top gameplay and score attack elements, bloody brilliant.

Re: n-Space Not Happy With Heroes Of Ruin Sales Figures

TheAdza

I had the demo. I didn't think it warranted a full price purchase. Everything seemed just too generic. However, if n-space wanted to try and recoup some money, why not slap it on the eShop at a highly discounted price. It won't happen, but with the current games climate, games that aren't high profile big budget productions just don't do well at retail, and Heroes of Ruin really does look and play like something that should be $10-$15 (AU) on the eShop, not a full price retail game. It's a shame this wont happen because I think, from the demo, there's a lot to like about this game. It's just the perceived value of it where the problem lies.

Re: Pachter Pours Scorn Over Wii U Sales Projections

TheAdza

He probably is right. The only games i will be buying are NSMBU and Scribblenauts Unlimited. I get Nintendo Land as a pack in. That's all i can afford right now. I would love to get Mass Effect 3 as I havent had the chance to play any of that series, but seeing how the trilogy is coming out soon for the other HD consoles, the Wii U version will seem lacking. Not really interested in anything else right now. But I will have a good collection in the coming years I can guarantee that. I did have 40+ Wii games at one stage. All bought new. I think that's down to just over 20 now.

Re: Retro Studios Gets a Bigger Office

TheAdza

I know Retro have an amazing reputation, and I have enjoyed many of their games myself, but I would really like them to output some more games. I would like to see them make some original IP. Not to mention smash out some DKCR sequels for the 3DS and WiiU.

Re: Rumour: Youkai Watch Coming To 3DS

MAKE IT HAPPEN LEVEL 5! WORLDWIDE RELEASE!

Inazuma Eleven looked like a great series of games that sadly never reached as many places as it could have. I'm hoping games like these get put on the eShop exclusively as opposed to fighting for space on store shelves. Then again if the show turns out to be a hit, then I'm all for traditional retail and eShop releases.

Re: Talking Point: Are Wii U Games Going To Be Too Expensive?

TheAdza

I don't see the value in paying that high price for a game like NSMBU. It's just not worth that much money. A new 3D Mario adventure game sure, but not a 2D platformer. Especially one that although I know will be great fun, it is just yet another remix of the NSMB formula in HD with different backgrounds. Would a HD Zelda game be worth the price? Yes. Bayonetta 2? Indeed. Rayman Legends? No. Even Pikmin is going to be a hard sell at the higher price. CoD and Mass Effect and all those AAA games deserve the higher price. But a 2D recycled HD Mario platformer does not in my opinion.

I can see Wii U games becoming more competitive once the next round of consoles start appearing.
