@MegaVel91 Ok sure. Explain to me Metroid Dread's visual style since you managed to nicely explain Ori and Hollow Knight and how it sets itself apart from other Metroidvanias.
Anyway seeing how you're trying to defend the game from multiple other comments makes me feel real bad for you so I'll be back in a few months when reviews and sales figures are in to see how well your comment has aged.
@AlleywayBrawler Yea I'm sure they won E3 for Nintendo fans like yourself, but gaming audience in general doesn't care much about 2D Metroid and Advanced Wars.
Additionally, Mario Party and WarioWare has never really been considered been considered top Nintendo priorities (unlike 2D/3D Mario, DK, Zelda etc.), while SMT5 was leaked beforehand and was not considered new by then. All the titles you mentioned have never been heavy hitters with regards to sales figures, demonstrating they have not really resonated with the general audience.
So yes, for Nintendo fans, of course Nintendo won E3, but in general, I don't think many others would agree.
Honestly speaking, the Direct only appealed to old-school Nintendo fans and did nothing for video game fans in general. All the titles that people are so hyped up about (2D Metroid, Advanced Wars, WarioWare etc.) are not the big hitters (i.e. Mario titles, DK, Zelda etc.) that usually do not perform well sales-wise and are only played by Nintendo fans.
And please don't tell me that Nintendo 'won' E3 by showing off a short trailer of a game that didn't really give any new information. E3s have generally been about showcasing new games and information, and if a trailer of an already known game is said to have won E3, I guess E3 has really lost it's meaning.
@MegaVel91 I'm so glad you pointed that out. "Hollow Knight is hand-drawn 2D animation. Ori's visual style is unique", while Metroid Dread is generic 3D rendered models with nothing special about them.
I'm not comparing apples to oranges, I'm comparing the common apple to those apples in Japan that sell for $10 a piece. That's how I'd prefer to peddle apples.
In any case, we should look at how consumers in general view the different kinds of apples, and not determine it by our own bias opinion. Looking at sales figure for Samus Returns on 3DS compared to Hollow Knight and both the Ori games, I kind of feel that they would prefer the $10 Japanese apple a lot more than your common variety...
@Classic603 I'll accept the fact that different people like different styles of graphics and leave it at that.
However regarding gameplay (sliding, clinging to walls, stealth mode, chase sequences etc.), what you've just described has been done so many times in other Metroidvanias and cannot really generate the excitement in most of the average and common gamer who is not a Metroid fan.
Given that I missed out the Treehouse section when I made my comment, the boss fight looked really good, but other than that, the general moment to moment gameplay looked real bogged-down standard fare.
The bar has been set so low/people have been so starved of Metroid news that people actually think the trailer looks great.
Besides the game looking like a reused asset dump from 3DS Samus Returns, albeit upscaled to HD but HD as in WiiU levels of HD and not what the Switch should be able to do, the only gameplay hook that's new is having your very own Nemesis chasing you around.
Compare this to the other Metroidvanias already on the Switch like Hollow Knight, the Ori series etc. and this falls flat in terms of gameplay and graphics (at least in terms of what Nintendo has shown in the trailer).
If the next 2D Mario was shown off with such un-polish and boring gameplay, I'm quite sure there would be a big hoo-ha about it. Thus it's a surprise game only managed to escape those kinds of criticism but instead was generally viewed positively really shows how much pass we give Metroid.
Can someone please objectively tell me what was good about the trailer shown. I.e. "Gameplay looked great and unique" or "graphics really popped".
The author of the article already gave the example of how the launch package DID NOT looks better in the case of Pokemon Sword and Shield.
And as many have already mentioned, we are talking about Pokemon which is developed mainly by the Pokemon Company, and not Nintendo. And the graphics of Sword and Shield did suck btw.
@electrolite77 I would give the same argument regarding software. Is the number of software sold on the Nintendo Switch equivalent or more than the combined numbers of what a home console and handheld of the same generation would sell? If the answer is no, then you could say that Nintendo is actually losing out on potential sales.
For example, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch vastly outsold that of Mario Kark 8 on the WiiU, is it more than Mario Kart 8 on the WiiU combined with Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS?
It's kind of the truth? Do remember that the Switch was supposed to be a directly replacement for Nintendo's next-gen console AND handheld when it launched. The 50 million sales is impressive if you consider it as just a home console, but remember that there was no '4DS' handheld where people who had limited funds previously had to choose between buying a WiiU or the 3DS. Those who previously who only afford a handheld now are buying the Switch as well, so the 50 million sales should be taken with a pinch of salt (in that it should have been the combined sales figures of this gen's console and non-existant handheld). And now that a real handheld in the form of the Switch Lite has been released, as expected and reported, resulted in a drop in sales of the original Switch.
If only they had allowed the Link skillset to be permanently available. It kills a lot of the immersion if you suddenly revert back to mario after taking just a hit, and prevents 'full' zelda-styled levels.
@ACK there is no point in comparing Fortnite with Pokémon. Fortnite never gave an excuse of cutting down content in order to give a better experience. In fact they do the opposite. Like you have already mentioned, they have so many updates which have added so much content, and in a multiplayer-focused game where bugs cannot be found in a single test play though (which is easily accomplished in Pokémon), that bugs are only expected.
TLDR, Fortnite didn't cut content in order to polish the game. They kept adding more and more with each update. Pokémon did cut content to 'polish the game', but the game was not polished.
For those defending this as nitpicking... Of course this is nitpicking, but you totally missed the point here. Such a mistake, while inconsequential to gameplay, shows that proper checking was not done for the game. These little problems (and big problems that everyone already knows of) add up, and given that Game Freak had already done a lot of cutting from the game while (giving the excuse that the delays and cuts were made to 'polish-up' the game), of course people are mad.
@Ludovsky you totally missed my point about dragon quest, I never talked about the target audience of each game but instead focused on the scope of the game.
I've never believed in the 'Nintendo pays reviewers for their reviews' thing before, but after looking at some video reviews (looking at you IGN and GameSpot), it's hard to see why people have been claiming so. There was zero mention about the cut National Dex in either of them, which has been the biggest elephant in the room leading to the launch of this game. Thus I can see why, and even feel why it is justifiable for so many to dislike their video reviews even without having played the game yet.
Another gripe is that many of the reviewers have praise for this game when compared to the previous handheld titles. It's quite stupid as these improvements should either a) be expected from a game jumping from handheld to home console, and b) were easy fixes that should have been done in the first place on the handhelds.
And things like IGN declaring 'Gameplay over Graphics' as one of the key review areas totally throws invalidates their entire review, as simply there was no real improvement on gameplay compared with previous entries.
Many reviewers also did not mention how the wild area existed just to exist and did not tie into the story in any meaningful sense. It's more of a 'people want an open world game but we don't know how to do it so let's try to cover it up by including a semblance of it'. And also how lifeless and boring the different towns are.
My main gripe though is how dragon quest xi can be so vast, open, have lively and truly inhabited cities, the same weather/day-night cycle, a real story, and 600+ (read: twice of Sword and Shield) fully animated monsters, while Game Freak simply says 'nah sorry this is the best we can give you'.
Sorry Nintendo you got it wrong this time. The power difference between the Switch and PS4 and Scarlett would mean that some games just cannot be technically ported over to the Switch. The Switch simply cant handle them, no matter how scaled down they will be. Case in point the Wii which while dominated in sales figures, could not receive scaled-down ports of most triple A third-party games, but instead received completely different versions of the game (FIFA, COD) etc. which was mostly a totally different game.
Right now in terms of processing power, the Switch is around 1.5 generations behind the PS4 Pro and Xbox one X, making some ports (and a very small percentage at that) possible (and even when the ports are done well like Wolfenstein, we consider them technical marvels, that should not have worked in the first place). Given that the next gen Sony and Microsoft consoles are stated to be graphically twice stronger than their current gen consoles, I think we can forget about seeing new 3rd party games coming onto the Switch unless the game was made originally in mind for the seitch8.
I don't understand the praise given for this game. Bland, boring, mindless, repetitive, not even close to a Zelda clone that many say it is. Didn't even complete it even though it was a short game.
@electrolite77 why didn't anybody understand what I meant was that you should expect the sales result of a handheld + a home console, and that Wii+DS was just used as an analogy, and I even threw in WiiU+3DS to made it clearer...
What I meant is that such huge numbers should not be unexpected given that you are combining the sales figures of what should have been 2 individual items; a handheld and a home console
Sorry to burst your bubble a but please remember most Japanese also play the Switch as a handheld. So you should be expecting DS+Wii numbers for Japanese sales. Yes I really mean the collective number of DS+Wii (or 3DS+WiiU) to compare to just the Switch, as technically has a much larger consumer base, bought by both handheld and home console users.
@Ralizah I think you basically pointed out why people think the graphics suck yourself .
'The environments look pretty stunning for a Pokemon game'. -
The graphics look pretty decent for a Pokémon game'. This. If this was not a Pokémon game, the graphics would be considered poor. Only because the graphics of previous Pokémon games were quite blend and boring (even comparing ultra sun and moon with what other 3d games on the 3ds could do), do we feel that what we saw with sword and shield were good. As most people have pointed out, this looks like a HD engine of ultra sun and moon, which might have been acceptable for the WiiU, but is a bit let down for the Switch.
'It's actually nicer looking than I thought it would be.' - to be honest, this shows that your expectations of the game's graphics were quite low to think like that.
'The character models are pretty decent as well. A proper evolution of what we got in S/M.' - You said it man. They only look decent. And an evolution of S/M, an evolution of a handheld non-HD game. While I would agree with you that their models look decent, their faces look extremely plastic and lifeless.
Given the quality of the graphics of the many other 3D open world games available on the switch, it would be hard pressed to be impressed or even satisfied by what we saw.
But whatever, I'm still going to buy the game and Game Freak knows that millions are still are despite our complaints.
The first hour delighted with graphics and gameplay, until you realise that that is all you are getting for the remainder of the game.
Got so repetitive with some of the most uninspired level designs ever until I could not bear to complete the game despite playing past 70% of the game.
Given that the Frence IGN story has been already proven fake, I guess it proved my point. It's not just about reflective tape and cardboard printers. It's also about perforated edges and strings and other mechanisms built into the cardboard that we don't know about now.
But what you said is still possible, and even if Nintendo doesn't release the designs, I'm sure some China knock-off will be offering them online real soon after launch.
I don't see how you can print out your own designs. Given how the entire thing works (IR cameras detecting reflective tape to send a signal), you simply can't 'print' reflectiveness onto cardboard.
Furthermore, how many of us actually have printers that are able to print on cardboard...
It is sad that a confirmation about a game, without showing anything else or providing even one bit of details, was the biggest highlight about the Nintendo Spotlight . Shows how badly the rest of the segment went.
Quoted directly from the e3 website: 'E3 is the world's premier event for computer, video and mobile games and related products. At E3, the video game industry's top talent pack the Los Angeles Convention Center, connecting tens of thousands of the best, brightest, and most innovative in the interactive entertainment industry. For three exciting days, leading-edge companies, groundbreaking new technologies and never-before-seen products will be SHOWCASED.'
Secondly, an EXPO, you know the third 'e' in e3, is short for 'exhibition' which also refers to a display or showcase of things.
Thirdly, lifted from Wiki: 'In its current form, the Expo primarily features presentations from major hardware and software publishers, traditionally including Microsoft, Sony, Activision, Ubisoft, Nintendo, and others. These presentations, often lasting one hour or more, are presented in the Convention Center's main auditorium, or in other large nearby venues, and allow the companies to present their upcoming products for the current year.'
Unless you don't know what an exhibition is, I believe you cannot be reasoned with.
@jswhitfield8 Yes I agree with you that it's nice to know during e3 that a game you have been longing for is coming out. It marked me out when MP4 was announced.
But what I don't agree with is that a company can 'win' or have a successful e3 based on just a simple announcement without showing off anything else. It's like claiming that you're going to perform well at an examination just by proclaiming it.
And if what you want to know is learning what you will want to play next, e3 should not be used as such a platform as a simple press release or Facebook/Twitter post could accomplish such a thing. e3 is about wowing people and not just making generic announcements.
@jswhitfield8 Is a simple 'Pokemon and Metroid are coming to the Switch' something e3 worthy if there is totally no information, details, videos, or basically ANYTHING else we know about the games?
e3 is about SHOWCASING games, so sorry, but a simple announcement is not e3 material. I think that's the fact that so many people forget when they claim that Nintendo won this years e3.
Most people here are just saying Nintendo did well because of the Metroid reveals... Which was just a bloody icon. How would that be considered winning in anyway without showing even a little bit about the game? It was basically just Nintendo saying 'we are making Metroid Prime 4' without doing literally anything else. And why does everyone say that suddenly there are so many games that they want to get? More than half of them have already been announced before.
Basically Nintendo gave Nintendo fans what we wanted (including me), but they did not give gamers in general anything to shout about. Isn't this exactly what happened to the Wii U? Once all Nintendo fans buy their Switch, Switch sales will stall as there is nothing to attract the average gamer.
I don't see how most of you all can say that it was a good e3 for Nintendo.
Besides the lack of 3rd party games (and most of them are ports of last-gen console games anyway), the only real new announcement of real note was Prime 4 and the core Pokémon series on Switch.
The Metroid 2 remake is simply a remake. The sheer frequency of Kirby and Yoshi games releasing on handhelds the past few years have made it hard for anyone to be excited about a new one so soon.
Mario Odyssey, while the trailer was good, was also expected to be good so it did not 'blow me away' like so many others say.
There's also Xenoblade 2 but seriously the graphics look like they belong on the Wii, not even the WiiU. Chronicles looked a whole lot better. So unless you're already a Xenoblade fan, I don't see new adopters of the series.
Mario/Rabbids looks like an interesting one so I will leave my scrutiny for when it actually releases.
There was a glaring lack of new and original (not remakes/remastering) and even for those that get us excited like Prime 4 and Pokémon, there was a complete lack of footage for both to get us hyped up in anyway.
Edit: Lack of third-party was the real killer for me. Please tell me how you say that you only buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games because everyone already saw how a lack of third-party totally killed off the WiiU. It is no longer an acceptable excuse.
Was really hoping for Beyond Good and Evil 2 to be announced as at least a timed-exclusive for the Switch which would give people to actually buy the Switch. Still it might be announced tomorrow so there's hope. Otherwise despite the Switch's strong start, it could quickly go the way of the WiiU given that most Nintendo fans have already gotten their Switch.
Truth be told, most people do not like stage effects and would rather take a Battlefield or Final Destination-styled map where they can just concentrate on brawling rather than watching out for how the map changes. Cutting down on such unwanted field effects would have brought down development time by so much and players wouldn't have even missed much. Truthfully can people tell me whether they do or do not play maps with stage effects? I and all my friends hate such maps for sure.
Guys please give my stage a try!!!
Promise you it won't be a waste of time as nothing was haphazardly placed but properly designed.
I have to be a bit thick-skinned here to get some views so I am going to 5-star my own course but if this is against the rules here please remove it. Will make more depending on the response.

Re: Feature: Castlevania Season 4 Review - An Epic Ending To Netflix's Hugely Satisfying Series
Only thing good were the fight sequences. Story had no proper conclusion besides the main storyline.
So what happened after Issac defeated Carmilla? That was his end game the entire time? What happened to his quest for conquest?
And how did Dracula and Lisa get resurrected? 'We suddenly found ourselves waking up in a field' is just lazy writing.
Same with how Trevor managed to escape the Infinite Corridor without any escape mechanic which should have otherwise been impossible.
And Saint Germain being such a ridiculous coward was not consistent with past season's behavior.
Way too many plot holes.

'E3 is the world's premier event for computer, video and mobile games and related products.
Thirdly, lifted from Wiki:
'In its current form, the Expo primarily features presentations from major hardware and software publishers, traditionally including Microsoft, Sony, Activision, Ubisoft, Nintendo, and others. These presentations, often lasting one hour or more, are presented in the Convention Center's main auditorium, or in other large nearby venues, and allow the companies to present their upcoming products for the current year.'
Unless you don't know what an exhibition is, I believe you cannot be reasoned with.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
@jswhitfield8 Yes I agree with you that it's nice to know during e3 that a game you have been longing for is coming out. It marked me out when MP4 was announced.
But what I don't agree with is that a company can 'win' or have a successful e3 based on just a simple announcement without showing off anything else. It's like claiming that you're going to perform well at an examination just by proclaiming it.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
@electrolite77 Then I think you have sorely missed the point about e3.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
@jswhitfield8 I think everyone should watch this video as ProJared explains what I said much better.

And if what you want to know is learning what you will want to play next, e3 should not be used as such a platform as a simple press release or Facebook/Twitter post could accomplish such a thing. e3 is about wowing people and not just making generic announcements.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
@jswhitfield8 Is a simple 'Pokemon and Metroid are coming to the Switch' something e3 worthy if there is totally no information, details, videos, or basically ANYTHING else we know about the games?
e3 is about SHOWCASING games, so sorry, but a simple announcement is not e3 material. I think that's the fact that so many people forget when they claim that Nintendo won this years e3.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
@phirst Agreed, agreed and agreed.
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?
Re: Sakurai Talks About the Development Process Behind the Smash Bros. DLC Stages
Re: Runner 1
Guys please give my stage a try!!!
Promise you it won't be a waste of time as nothing was haphazardly placed but properly designed.
I have to be a bit thick-skinned here to get some views so I am going to 5-star my own course but if this is against the rules here please remove it. Will make more depending on the response.
