At the start of this week, Nintendo revealed Link from The Legend of Zelda series would be coming to Super Mario Maker 2 in the version 2.0 update. The good news is that this update has now arrived – and, as you can see from the video above, we were lucky enough to go hands-on with it a few days ago. It's good stuff.
Link isn't going alone, either. He comes equipped with the Master Sword, his trusty bow and a pocketful of bombs. He can even perform a new downwards thrust move to match Mario's ground pound.
Apart from this, the new update also adds more course parts and enemies, as well as the new Ninji Speedrun mode – allowing you to unlock special Mii costumes. You can see the full patch notes here if you're interested.

Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to it. I'm hoping they do this for more characters.
Imagine playing the levels as old school Wario!
I wonder if instead of simple skin swaps, that in future characters being added in, they will have abilities. Peach will have float parasol and vegetables/ emotion demon things, Yoshi flutter and his tongue, Kirby suction and float and abilities, etc.
Would be really cool! Hopefully they make different characters for the different game styles.
Oh man, now I have to return to SMM2! I’m sure there will be some insane maps coming.
So which wil be first ?
A complete recreation of Zelda 1 or 2 ?
@Kalmaro Yeah, a Super Garlic powerup would be perfect for the (hopefully forthcoming) Super Mario Bros. 2 style.
It's really fun. Played a couple of makers levels in the zelda theme. Making my own too which has been really cool. Using bombs, pegasus boots and downward thrusts. Just need to figure out how to use the arrow 🤔
If only they had allowed the Link skillset to be permanently available. It kills a lot of the immersion if you suddenly revert back to mario after taking just a hit, and prevents 'full' zelda-styled levels.
@KitsuneNight Zelda 2 side scrolling temples. I already made one in SMM1.
Already made a Link level and I have to say I like how versatile Link is. I really do hope that more character power ups will be added, I’d love to see Samus, Mega Ma, Kirby, or even Sonic or Wario be added down the road!
@ProfessorNess really? That seems ridiculous to go back to MARIO! why does Nintendo often find a way to make something amazing a little less perfect?
@ProfessorNess
I mean, that's entirely on creators to make levels that reward skill for avoiding damage or to make the power-up readily available in case something goes wrong. Nintendo just offered up the tools. It's on the makers now.
But let's be real, that won't happen. Fair Mario Maker levels? What's that??
Are they going to add more official levels featuring the new stuff or will the only way to play them be from other users created levels?
And I wish they’d add a some mass level downloads or “worlds” to the online component.
I loved every Zelda game I played with but Zelda II because of its "action" mode. What I really like is the classic exploration mode indeed.
Now with this update you can make infinite custom Zelda levels, but all of the action kind.
That's why I won't do much with this feature.
Played a few levels today. Total game changer. Link brings so much new possibilities to the table.
@ProfessorNess Yep, this I agree with. Problem now is that in each section, most creators will leave the Master Sword power up, which means you are never really in danger of dying.
Why is the footage not of link???
Why only in SMB1 style? Link could perfectly work on SMB3 and SMW styles too, I dont get it.
