Re: Cave Story

Jockolantern

Words cannot express how disappointed I am that DeceasedCrab has no love for this particular iteration of the game. I, for one, still cannot wait to get my grubby hands on it. The success of a game like this on WiiWare should bode very well for the future of not only indie game developers on WiiWare but more platformers like Cave Story and La-Mulana to be commissioned for the service. It's a win-win as far as I'm concerned and an excuse to go for all-out completion on the game, experience the new visual/music upgrades, download the new content as it is released, and support Pixel with my money for his amazing work on this game in the first place. He has always deserved it. It's just a shame some don't see it that way.

Re: Pop+ Solo Release Dates Announced

Jockolantern

Still don't understand the excitement for this particular title. The WiiWare version is by far my least favorite of the 40+ I currently own, though I suppose maybe the direct tapping controls of the stylus would crank up the fun level of this one up to where it should have been originally. It just doesn't play well as a console title. Here's hoping this DSiWare release will be different.

Re: LucasArts Bringing Classic Games to Virtual Console

Jockolantern

Great news to see Lucasarts partnering up with the VC and getting some great licensed content up. All the Super Star Wars games are excellent and will definitely be great additions to my VC library in the coming weeks. Keep it coming, Nintendo! This is not only great news in and of itself but bodes well for the future of licensed material appearing on the Virtual Console! Awesomeness!

Re: New Metroid Prime Trilogy Artwork

Jockolantern

I feel bad for anyone who doesn't splurge on this collection. Three of the best games of all time released on one disc with enhanced 16x9 visuals and superior motion controls for the first two titles? I've been saving my Completion runs of all three titles for this release and it certainly doesn't look like it is going to in any way disappoint. I simply... don't understand the people who dislike any of these oustanding titles.

Gorgeous artwork, too. I particularly like the Parasite Queen one; very cool. Gotta' love that Gamestop is offering a T-shirt and a nice artwork poster with pre-orders. Very good looking pack-ins. Cannot wait for August 25th.

Re: Wii Gamers Called Up for Modern Warfare

Jockolantern

Odd marketing decision, to say the least. Didn't care much for the game in its PS3 iteration, so I'm more than positive I won't care for it much in Wii form. Let's at least hope that Activision smooths out the motion control issues World at War had/has. Not terrible by any stretch, but still a little bit... stiff.

Re: Rage of the Gladiator Coming to WiiWare

Jockolantern

I rather like the look of this game. I'm not completely sold but I do love the fact that Ghostfire themselves have been so upfront, open and honest about the developmental process and the kind of gameplay experience they're trying to deliver with this game... and telling it to us right here at Nintendo Life. Good on you, Ghostfire! I'm looking forward to trying this game out. In any event, I like the look of this style of gladiatorial combat game much better than the rather stilted and overcooked look of HVS's similar upcoming title.

Re: Sexy Poker

Jockolantern

This may be the most useless piece of garbage on WiiWare at the moment... and I'm throwing in even the worst of the shovelware into that equation. Seriously. Give me Cave Story or give me death! But don't give me this hilariously bad, faux M-rated Sexy Poker crap. Ugh.

Re: Nintendo are 'very impressed' with Monster Hunter 3's Graphics

Jockolantern

It's certainly the best looking game on the Wii to date in terms of how much it pushes pixels. Really raises the bar for the Zelda Wii team; hopefully it brings out the best looking Zelda title to date and one that even rivals Monster Hunter 3 in visual lavishness. Pixels aside though, I find the overall art design of games like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, MadWorld and even lesser titles such as Klonoa, Little King's Story, and Opoona to have more "character" than Monster Hunter 3 appears to have. I'll withhold my final opinion until I actually get to play the game but while the art direction is solidly gorgeous and the pixel pushing is jaw-dropping considering the Wii's hardware limitations, Nintendo's current gen console has certainly seen better games in terms of overall artistic vision.

Not to be a grammar Nazi (although that's exactly what I'm about to be) but the title of this particular article should begin "Nintendo IS," not "Nintendo ARE." There... I said it.

Re: La Mulana Announcement and Trailer

Jockolantern

Yeah. Just wet my pants in excitement for this. This, Cave Story, and Night Game are THE WiiWare releases to beat this year. The update work Nicalis and Nigoro have done to La-Mulana looks nothing short of drop-dead gorgeous and I can't wait to see what sort of extra content they add to it over time. I also love the Guidance Gate remix played over the trailer. Awesome.

These are the kind of games that deserve all our support on WiiWare so Nintendo knows we want to see more and more of this. Color me uber-excited!

Re: ColorZ

Jockolantern

I like the look of this game a lot. The graphic art style is a bit flamboyant, but I suppose it works for what they're going for in terms of color coordination. Could be a very enjoyable game.

Re: La-Mulana Coming to WiiWare

Jockolantern

Those screenshots look simply gorgeous. My jaw hit the floor when I saw them. Looks to be a beautiful visual update to the original while retaining the original layouts and look of everything from Lemeza to the skeletons to the pots and especially the tile layouts.

I certainly don't recommend that anyone miss out on this game when it's released. This is exactly the sort of love WiiWare needs and has to be one of the top five most exciting titles announced for the service to date.

Re: Interviews: Red Steel 2 Developer Videos

Jockolantern

This is an FPS to get excited about. I'm done with stiff, analog stick-based controls. Looks like the developers at Ubisoft have really crafted this game with some tender love and devotion. Gorgeous art direction combined with what looks to be some solid gameplay mechanics. Love the swiftness with which you can switch between gunslinging and katana slashing. Can't wait to give this game a go this November. I'm hoping it'll be the FPS to beat on every console; every one that comes out on the PS3/360 seems to be just one more tired rehash of the ones before. The Wii really opens things up and allows developers to look past pixel counts and analog-restrictiveness and let the first-person experience breathe with more life and run with a lot more kinetic, visceral energy.

Re: The Three Musketeers: One for All! Coming to North America on Monday

Jockolantern

Definitely my kinda' game here. Looks pretty good too, even if the running animation looks odd (but we all put up with Wander in Shadow of the Colossus, so...) and the repeated swing mechanic seems a bit stiff. Love the visual design of the game and what appear to be beautifully done platforming elements. Definitely looking forward to next Monday!

Re: La-Mulana Coming to WiiWare

Jockolantern

Dude... I mean, duuuuuuuuude. I mean-- DUDE!

This has to be amongst the cream of the crop for great WiiWare news, along with Cave Story and Mega Man 9. Anyone who hasn't played this game, prepare to be absolutely punished by the difficulty. It's an exceptionally rewarding game but an incredibly tough one, as anyone who has played it or watched DeceasedCrab's famous LP will tell you. An with an upgrade to 16-bit style graphics, I'm even more stoked. I just hope the same three guys who developed the first game are behind the WiiWare redux.

Also, the music in this game is outrageously good. I'd highly recommend people download the game just so they can have a copy of the soundtrack. Terrific musical work.

I also concur on the statements of seeing newbs getting their asses handed to them by Hell Temple. Provided they actually get that far, mind you. It's not like the actual game itself is a cakewalk. Confusion Gate, anyone? ^_~

Re: Two New Mini Ninjas Trailers

Jockolantern

Loads of potential for this game. Could be a truly remarkable little Wii action title to practically come out of nowhere this year. The multiplatform aspect of the game mystifies me, however, since even the 360/PS3 versions don't appear to look a whole lot more visually arresting than the Wii iteration.

Re: Review: Bit Boy!! (WiiWare)

Jockolantern

The game isn't a complete dud like I anticipated and the gameplay is enjoyable enough in and of itself but the overall package is immensely underwhelming and quite truncated. Two to three times the amount of levels would have been terrific and would have added some much needed "meat" to the overall experience. As it is, it's a passable attempt at Pac-Man esque gameplay, nicely retro styled but disappointingly lacking and sadly short in the end.

Re: Gaijin Games Releases BIT.TRIP Teaser

Jockolantern

Whatever the next Bit.Trip game is, I know I can't freaking wait to play it. The crew at Gaijin games are fast becoming the coolest WiiWare service developers ever. I think only Nicalis will be able to give them a run for their money in the long run. The thought of a Bit.Trip-based platformer gets me very weak in the loins, if you know what I mean. ^_~ Knowing Gaijin, it's going to be nothing short of brilliant, original and addictive. Curse you and your infectious beat, Exploration!

Re: Review: Bit Boy!! (WiiWare)

Jockolantern

I'm sorely tempted to buy this game later today out of sheer, morbid curiosity to see just how underwhelming and botched it actually appears to be. That means I have to spend $6 just to have a valid opinion on a poor WiiWare title...

I suppose it's better than $50-$60 to have an opinion on a bad console game. And who knows... maybe I'll end up semi-liking it (question mark).

Re: Cave Story Nearing The Finish Line

Jockolantern

Woot! Glad to hear it's that much closer. Hopefully we'll have it by the end of this month! That would make me incredibly happy.

I'm quite willing to chip in and support Pixel for making such a fantastic action platformer and Nintendo for agreeing to publish the WiiWare iteration with all the enhancements, audio/visual options and eventual DLC. How on earth one can even compare this to the "free" version of the game is completely nonsensical to me. I'm quite happy to fork over several dollars to support a game that was ALREADY worth paying money for when Pixel released it as freeware a few years ago. The fact that indie developers like him can break onto services such as WiiWare is a terrific indication that indie games have a very bright future on major download services with the likes of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. I don't see how this is a bad thing at all. Just look at World of Goo, Eduardo the Samurai Toaster, Bit.Trip Beat, LIT, Icarian, Lost Winds, et al. And now Cave Story.

You wanna' play the original, freeware version of Cave Story? Go for it. But I, for one, am more than willing to pitch in my hard-earned money to let Nintendo know I love this kind of stuff and want to see more of it and also to support the original developer of the game, Pixel, who so very well deserves it.

Re: Sega Not Giving Up On Mature Wii Titles Just Yet

Jockolantern

Hopefully The Conduit sells well enough to keep Sega's hopes high to continue putting out quality material on the Wii geared towards a more mature audience. Glad to hear they're not throwing in the towel just yet; MadWorld and The Conduit are both solid games and deserve gamer support.

Re: New Furry Legends Gameplay Trailer

Jockolantern

Wasn't terribly excited about this one when I first heard about it, but the trailer has me intruigued. Not hot on the soundtrack, but I like the old school SNES-stylings of the art direction and the platforming looks solid, so here's hoping the rest of the in-game music is good and that the gameplay lives up to snuff. Could be a very fun platformer, even if it does star yet another ball.

Re: Brutal Legend Wii Cancelled

Jockolantern

I love Tim Schafer, but I simply don't like this mash-up of high fantasy and heavy metal he's come up with... especially when it "stars" Jack Black. Couldn't care less that it won't make it to the Wii.

Re: Box Art: Metroid Prime Trilogy

Jockolantern

That Collector's Edition metal packaging edition is all mine. Wow, that's some sexy cover art design. And here I thought I couldn't get any more excited for this particular release!

After playing Corruption with the vastly superior Wii controls, it's been absolutely impossible to go back to playing the first two games with a stiff analog stick. The 16x9 enhancements for Prime and Echoes will also be very welcome additions.

August 24th can't come soon enough.

Re: NEVES Plus

Jockolantern

This game rocks. A very pleasant surprise on WiiWare and one of the most addictive puzzlers I've had the pleasure of playing this year. Tons of content for $6 that should keep any puzzle-loving gamer occupied for a loooooong time, as well as some terrific, engaging multiplayer modes.

IGN's 8.0 is right on the money.

Re: Nintendo Download: Drill Sergeants, Puzzles, Golf, Art Styles and Planets (US)

Jockolantern

Neves Plus is a terrific puzzler for $6; loads of content and some very fun, engaging multiplayer. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by this little title so this week's update was certainly not a loss. And Nintendo got two shovelware WW releases out of the way so that can only mean good things for getting the good stuff onto the service.

Stop complaining, people, Ugh. "Back in my day," we had to wait actualy MONTHS for a couple new console games we really wanted to play. We sure as hell didn't have the terrific option of an online, downloadable weekly update.

Be. Patient. Cave Story will be here soon.

Re: Shia LaBeouf Disses the Wii

Jockolantern

This has to be the most ringing endorsement for the Wii I've seen all year. I mean, seriously? We're supposed to take what LaBeefcake says seriously considering he has absolutely zero talent as an actor to begin with? If Shia likes his 360 more than anything else, than I do believe I'll stay the f*** away from whatever he's playing and stick to this generation's clear winner and best console for tried and true, old-school loving gamers.

Shia sounds like another FPS-obsessed tool.

Re: Review: Eduardo the Samurai Toaster (WiiWare)

Jockolantern

Good review and an honest-to-goodness spot-on score. It's not a perfect game and if there's ever a sequel, there's a lot of room for expansion and improvement. However, for what it is, it's a very enjoyable game with plenty of personality, gorgeous artwork, solid music and smooth, crisp gameplay. An old-school, make-up-your-own-backstory arcade run'n'gun which is certainly never short on fun if you get a gang of friends together to blaze through it on one of the higher difficulties. I look forward very much to seeing what Semnat Studios come up with next!

Re: Eduardo the Samurai Toaster

Jockolantern

It's a fine run'n'gun game and no more or less repetitive than any other of that particular genre; it's what this type of game thrives off of: arcade-style action.

What this game really could've done with is more bosses, a stronger ending and some additional vertical scrolling and shmup stages. It's still a very enjoyable gameplay experience for what it is and features an absolutely gorgeous art style which is striking, unique and never an eyesore. I was quite stunned at how smooth and clean it look even on my 42" widescreen TV. And for the hardcore gaming completionist, run'n'gun masters, you've got your work cut out for you if you limit yourself to 1 or 3 lives and decide to play on Crazy Hard. It's definitely crazy, crazy hard.

The four-player option has also got to be a blast and I can't wait to try it out one of these days. It was fine with myself and better with a friend, so I can well imagine four players has got to be a real treat.

Not near as bad a game as many people are making it sound but certainly could do with some polishing and expanding here and there.

A solid Corbie-esque 7 / 10. ^_~

Re: Wii Sports Resort: now with online features!

Jockolantern

Very much looking forward to this game. Sounds like there's a lot of games in the package this time and judging by how much I love Motion Plus already (Tiger Woods & Grand Slam Tennis are absolutely fantastic), I'm even more excited to experience some Wii Sports action in 1:1 fashion. Love the look of sword fighting, ping pong, and archery in particular.

Re: Monster Hunter 3 Gets A Black Bundle In Japan

Jockolantern

I'm still awestruck by how gorgeous this game looks for a Wii title. Capcom has truly found some incredible ways to push Nintendo's lastest piece of hardware to its limits in providing a visually exceptionally game. Might be the best use of pixel-pushing yet seen on the Wii. How the framerate holds up under it all though... remains to be seen, I suppose.

Re: Sony Expects Wii Owners To Upgrade To PS3

Jockolantern

I wouldn't mind owning a 60GB PS3 sooner or later, mainly for The Last Guardian, a few other games and Blu-Ray, along with the full backward compatibility with PS1/PS2 games the 60GB model provides.

But would I get rid of my Wii in the process? Not a freakin' chance, Sony. Sorry, but I'm afraid I wouldn't much see it as an "upgrade." You'll get my money eventually, Sony, but Nintendo is just putting out a lot more goodies at the moment.

Re: New Wii Zelda Artwork Leaked?

Jockolantern

Whatever this artwork portends for the new game, it looks beautiful and gets me even more excited to see what direction Nintendo is taking for the latest installment of the series on the Wii. Love the mysterious floating spirit in front of Link as well as our famous hero's dramatic sideways glance. The sharpness of the lines really defines this particular piece of artwork; much of the smooth and soft drawing of previous Zeldas is gone and has been replaced with a much more (I don't want to use the word "edgy") abrupt, angular and almost visceral look.

Can't wait to get my hands on this game late next year.

Re: Nintendo Download: Flip Champs, Final Fantasy IV, Boulder Dash (US)

Jockolantern

$32 for all of The After Years isn't exactly all that bad considering we're getting a complete game like Final Fantasy IV (which cost $40 during its DS remake debut) and it's a game created from the ground-up and not just a remake. I remember paying $50+ for SNES RPGs back in the day (the SEARS catalog even sold SMRPG and a few other games for a whopping $75 at the time), so if the whole of After Years costs $32, I've got no opposition to forking out the money as I'm sure it will be a very grand time of JRPG FFIV goodness.

I'm also a fan of how they've decided to release all the episodes through the course of the next few months, with the last one coming out in early September. Spaces out the $3 charges so that they don't hit us all at once and at least this way we can pick and choose which stories we want to play through and can opt out of others if we hear they're not as good as the better ones.

Not a bad deal at all... good grief, you people do nothing but complain and complain even when we actually get what we want from companies like Nintendo and Square-Enix. Ugh.
