For those of you that have any interest in this kind of thing, Sony Europe boss David Reeves stepped down recently and was succeeded by a fellow called Andrew House.
This year's E3 was House's first as president of Sony Europe, so it's unsurprising that he wasted no time in chiming in with a typically brash Sony-style sound-bite when Edge Online interviewed him at the event.
EDGE: What are the key battlegrounds, as we go through the ten-year cycle, on which Sony will engage Microsoft? Is it encouraging people that have bought Wii into HD gaming?
Andrew House: I think you’re absolutely right. If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life cycle when the price point was right for them. I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will definitely be a factor in the marketplace.
So there you have it. Better start saving those pennies because according to Sony, you WILL be buying a PS3 soon - even if you don't know it yet.

About the only reason I want a PS3 at some point is Metal Gear Solid 4. It used to be Final Fantasy XIII was the thing that assured me I would be getting a PS3 some day, but now that Squeenix is releasing it on the 360 anyway, I don't think I'll ever get a PS3. There just aren't enough good, original games on the PS3 to warrant me spending $400+ on it. The wii really just has the better library. Yes, that wand demo at E3 was impressive, but I still feel like the wii will just do it better because that's what it was originally designed for. I feel like that wand will just become another failing gimicky sony peripheral.
And anyway, I'm plenty happy with my computer, my Wii, and my 360.
I say no chance there Andrew House, if you think that'll win us over just like that
I'm fine with a Wii and 360 anyway as it is, plus the PS3 is way too expensive for me. While I'd love to play MGS4 and inFamous, as well as Final Fantasy XIII Versus and maybe Ratchet and Clank (Can't think of any other exclusives I'd actually want), the Blu-Ray player is the big selling point for me as I'm certain it'll be the proper successor to DVD but I'm not upgrading yet, as it's too expensive. The changeover's already started, just like when DVD took over from VHS, so maybe in the future at some point I'll consider a PS3.
No chance will I buy a PS3. a) The Money, b) the loyalty to Nintendo. Miyamoto and Iwata would never say something like this, nor would Reggie! None of these people have ever degraded the other consoles like Sony and Microsoft are constantly doing in (failed) attempted to thwart us.
Shame on you, Sony, shame on you.
I will be getting a ps3 as my third Xbox 360 just broke on me...
The PS3 is a great Blu Ray player and has a lot of potential. Sadly, most of the potential isn't being taken advantage of at the current time. But I wouldn't go counting out Sony just yet. We're still a bit early in the game for that.
By the time the PS3 is as affordable as the Wii then yeah maybe I will buy one but as long as they are still asking for more than 350 dollars I'm just fine with the Wii. Besides even if Sony doesn't know it yet Nintendo has the best games. Always have always will. I choose gameplay over graphics any day. They are pretty mouthy for a company that wouldn't be making gaming consoles had it not been for Nintendo.
I wouldn't mind owning a 60GB PS3 sooner or later, mainly for The Last Guardian, a few other games and Blu-Ray, along with the full backward compatibility with PS1/PS2 games the 60GB model provides.
But would I get rid of my Wii in the process? Not a freakin' chance, Sony. Sorry, but I'm afraid I wouldn't much see it as an "upgrade." You'll get my money eventually, Sony, but Nintendo is just putting out a lot more goodies at the moment.
I would gladly buy a PS3, but dump any console for it. Never.
I will never ditch my cute little white Wii for a giant black building as I love my Wii & allthe games on it
And ten minutes later they get bashed for copying.
But seriously: PS2 vs N64? Wut?
I would upgrade to an Xbox 360 before ever upgrading to a PS3. When I do eventually buy an Xbox 360 it doesn't mean I am going to get rid of my Nintendo Wii or stop using it. I don't see myself buying a Sony console this gaming cycle. The PS3 just isn't what I want.
@#7
I don't think they may any backward compatible PS3s anymore, could be wrong though.
Sony needs to stop being so cocky. There are better ways to get your name in the news, I suppose. But I am a happy WiiS3 owner and will never own another 360 after mine broke and was supposedly built after they were "fixed"
well i know im gettin a PS3 soon little big planet got me hooked
I own a Wii and i've got a phat PC. I get my first person thrills using wii-mote and nunchuk, and keyboard and mouse, the two finest control methods ever. I cannot and will not go back to dual-analogue! Plus the Wii library is very very healthy and like Sony, I'm playing catch-up.
I will buy a PS3 when it is £100, which will be in about 5yrs.
And anyway, being a Ninty fanboy I HATE Sony and there lazy consoles and controllers, yuk!
Yeah... um I upgraded from Ps2 to Gamecube way back in the day, because 1 smash bros. melee and 2 ps2 was a piece of crap! dropped it once and it broke, dropped the GC from the same distance and it still ran fine.. dropped it five times, once onto the hard cement... still good.
Sony can suck it for all I'd care. I'd Rather support Microsoft. Wii60 luv!
I picked up a Wii because I saw software I wanted which wasn't on the other systems. Frankly the Playstation is too expensive and more importantly it's massive and hideous. I didn't think it was possible Sony could make an uglier machine than the PS2, but they managed it. Bravo!
The N64 was CLEARLY the more powerful system Mr Peeves.
People didn't buy the PS as an upgrade, they bought it because it could play CDs and had fancy cut-scenes.
i have both systems. i enjoy both.what can i say, with games like fallout 3 and resistance 2 the ps3 is a must have.i bought the wii first and got a ps3 3 years later. i'm not a hater but sony sometimes can be arrogant.oh, i dont even own a blueray movie. i think they are high priced and will not buy them.
I'm CONSIDERING a PS3 because I like those freaky enhanced graphics and those exclusive games plus PSN, where the PS One classics hold a great deal of nostalgia on me. But these statements are really taking the **** out of me, a major turn off Sony, clean up your act, and I'll see if I can add your system to my gaming family(me, Wii, TV, controllers, DS).
n64 to ps2? yeh its an upgrade, coz its was NEXT GENERATION. How can they be compared, clutching to straws there
i've just bought the Wii 3 months ago, there is no way im going to 'upgrade' to the PS3, unless i win or its gifted, btb im very fine this way
I've got both already...
if they think i'm going to buy 5 consoles every 10 years
they are really big wishers
but of course who sells fish must hope everybody eat fish.
Persuading people to buy Products??????? That is just like American counterparts of Sega and Nintendo of the 90's competing against one another with a series of television ads like Genesis Does what Nintendon't and the DK game that says that's not avaliable on any other console (Genesis, 32X CD games, PC, Turbografx) than the SNES!
What an idiot. Yeah, I do want a PS3 though. But I still say Ninty is superior.
Sony really aren't great at modesty, although I guess this is a fantastic PR exercise as it gets people talking about their brand and product. I'm a PSWii or a WiiS3 (whatever) gamer and don't really think of it as an upgrade but as access to a different type of gaming.
The games I use on my Wii are mainly Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, My Life As A King, lots of retro downloads and old GameCube games. My Wii fills the retro and easy fun side of my gaming life. The PS3 is a more serious affair with games like inFamous, Resi 5, SFIV and Uncharted taking up vast amount of gaming time in one go.
The important thing is I've not sold my Wii! Retro Nintendo games, innovative motion control games, key Nintendo franchises etc. will never appear on the PS3. Likewise the 'heavy' games don't tend to appear on the Wii (although I just bought Mad World!) so the PS3 services that need.
I think it's the 'upgrade' language that causes the problem here...
I love the greater online integration that the PS3 has such as friend lists, home, chat and trophies plus the Wii Shop could learn alot from the game demo's and trailers. Bluray is a great bonus but it was really about the different type of games for me, unlocked a different gaming experience (and 'new' retro access too!).
Upgrade again is the offending word here, I find the two systems to be complimentary offering a rounded gaming experience. The price of the PS3 is still heavy at £260 vs the Wii at £170 but that gap did used to be wider!
I'm not really bothered with Blu-Ray just yet, and I can't justify getting a PS3 just for the third Ico game, much as I want it. And I certainly won't be getting an X360. So I won't be "upgrading" any time soon, and even if I did, I wouldn't be putting the Wii aside for it.
In your dreams Sony! The only way I will buy a Playstation 3,is if they announce Kingdom Hearts III as an exclusive to the PS3.
I'm actually a die-hard Nintendo-lover (), but if the price for the PS3 drops, I'll probably get one of those as well.
I'm glad Nintendo is making so much money, but most of the money I spend on Nintendo products right now, is from buying games on VC and WiiWare.
The only way they'll get me to switch to a PS3 is if Nintendo starts making games for it. AKA never.
I recently bought a PS3, mainly for LittleBigPlanet, Street Fighter IV and the Ultimate Genesis Collection. All great games, but I still find myself playing the Wii more.
I have to admit my Wii is on everyday and so is my PS3... the PS3 gets more time per game but the Wii gets more plays!
I guess I should just be thankful I can have the best of both worlds! Just need more time now!
I simply have too many games waiting on me to pick up a ps3 now. I probably will get one, but not out of any desire to upgrade. Most likely a desire to play Last Guardian.
Umm, I would get an Xbox before I got a PS3. I hate Sony. I mean EVERYTHING SONY. Computers, phones, TVs, they always end up lasting less, they are not impressive, and seriously overpriced.
Wow, Sony, you lost the right to say anything like this a while ago. I definitely will NOT be "upgrading" to your console. Ever. I didn't buy a PS2 when you were ahead of Nintendo, and I won't buy a PS3 now that you're playing catchup.
Smell ya later, Sony.
Well, he's right in a sense.
People with Wiis do buy other systems, but obviously he had to take out the "other" system.
Owners of Wiis either stick with the Wii or buy an Xbox or PS3. To which I assume most go for the Xbox because of the game library and superior online modes.
The tone of that quote is not as brash as you, Nintendo Life, make it out to be. I bought Wii at launch and PS3 a year ago and I like both.
PS3 is phenomenal. I did almost exactly as the analyst said--Wii was cool, but not having giant, high-budgets, graphically ridiculous, HD-iculous gaming caused me to cave and buy one, and I haven't felt even slightly dismayed since. It's a fantastic piece of hardware, and I have yet to make a bad purchase for it (now the downloadable games my friend shared, however....)
@flatspikes
amen. took the worlds directly out of my skull...didn't even make it to my mouth.
The PS3 is worth owning for Ratchet and Clank ALONE, but why would I want to get rid of and forget the phenomenal Wii too? Do they really think that people just FORGET about great games on less-powerful machines? Then how do you explain the Virtual Console's success, and the fact that many games created back in the late 80s and all through the 90s are just as fun to play now as back then? And it's the same with the Wii and Xbox 360 and PS3: they ALL have great games that aren't going to just be forgotten in time. These people REALLY need to learn to think about what they're going to say BEFORE they say it!
Huh betamax eh? They're right though. I did. I don't think I'd go as insulting as calling it an upgrade as I use both, but I have each and they both get used.
Corbie said it best, they're not quite tapping the unit as well as they should, so don't count them out yet. Ultimately the library of the PS3 is more similar notably so to the Wii than the 360. If a Wii owner is looking to go 'HD' as a second unit odds are if price isn't going to be the huge problem (360 is cheaper) then well PS3 would be the logical step up into that arena.
The man who compared N64 to PS2 is a newb in the industry who obviously either:
A. Meant what these people chose for the next-gen.
or
B. Has no experience with the games industry.
Seeing as it's Sony, my guess is B.
Well, I'm getting one when Tekken 6 comes out >_<
i own the wii and one of my main reasons for buying ps3 was because of resident evil 5 and the final fantasy games and to play my own copy of legend of dragoon as that was my first rpg i played years ago so yeah my rpg fix comes from another system other then that my fav main games are resident evil series, the nintendo franchise, dragon ball z etc oh and tales of symphonia and i have a good pc now capable of playing pc games so i decided not to purchase the 360 plus that fact that i keep reading news about peoples console rrod on them though my cousin reasures me that doesn't happen anymore but i will go for his word on it but if it rrod on me im going to demand my money back
The only games I would want are Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet, but I really don't think it'd be worth it. Sony is crazy to think that I'm going to pay 400 dollars for a machine that does essentially the same thing the Wii does, only with better graphics and a blu-ray player--two things that I quite frankly don't care about.
Sony can come and talk thrash but will never beat my nintendo!!!!
Nintendo was my first electronic entertainment!!!! and keep the trash talking to your self SONY because nintendo sold more games AND consoles.
@Black_Fira - totally awesome reference. A relrelease of Legend of Dragoon on PSN would be straight legendary...my favorite "bad" RPG ever. By far. Storyline is good-terrible, battle system is excellent-repetetive, characters are hysterical-one-dimensional....such a killer game.
/sigh....the PS3 is so unbelievably different than the Wii...I love this site/Nintendo too, but please let the fanboyism take a backseat to reality...
This dude is funny. He thinks people were shooting over to PS2 for what reason? For power? Don't get it twisted, I bought a PS2 for games and games alone; infact, I always thought the PS2 looked terrible (graphically) and had a terrible controller, the games always felt blocky and stiff, but you can't argue with the library at a certain point. If Nintendo had been able to hold my attention with the games they were releasing, I wouldn't have needed to cop a PS2, but in classic Nintendo fashion, there just weren't enough good games on the console.
I'm still debating about getting a 360 or a PS3 for a side gaming experience, but it's definitely not an upgrade, I will never get rid of my Wii EVER. Now, Sony were really stupid when they remove BC from the PS3, since that was my major reason to get it, sigh I may try and search for an older model.
Well I had a ps2 & Gamecube, & owned & played more games on the Gamecube. I am considering getting a PS3 for games that aren't on the Wii since I really don't care for Microsoft at all, but I know overall, I'll be playing the Wii more just like I did with the Gamecube.
I sold my Wii for a PS3....I now have a PS3 in my gameroom and a PS3 in my living room for the BlueRay. I will get another Wii but Im fine with my DSi and Light at the moment. Im waiting on the Black Wii.
Hmm,
I also don't think that that quote was all that punchy. He's right in a sense and he wasn't rude about it. I'm a big Nintendo junkie and nothing would replace my Wii, but then I also just finally upgraded to a big HD tv and now that it's sort of won that format battle, I'm sure some consumers will consider it more as a good purchase. (Still too pricy, though, and HD will never trump the interactivity of the Wii-mote.)
To be honest, I would get an Playstation 3, but I'm not going to dump my WIi for it! Beside, it's too expensive, Grand Turismo 5 (The final version) isn't out yet (And it better be universally acclaimed), it has the fewest games, plus the economy is a wreck now. Maybe for Christmas, 2010, but get it now and dump the Wii? No thanks Sony! If your ever going to get me to buy your product, you better do the following things:
1. Make it cheaper! I expect it to cost at least $300 by holiday, 2010. That's a long time, so there's no excuse not to do it!
2. Give us more good Sony exclusives! I can think of only two things that I'm old enough to have that I can buy, Grand Turismo 5 and LittleBigPlanet. Even then, Grand Turismo 5 hasn't been released yet.
3. Wait until the economy gets better. As you can see Sony, the economy is horrible. We're in a severe recession that might turn into an depression. If you want to do those taunting ads, save them for later!
I might get the PS3 just for the Blu-ray player, and that I like some of its library, but cocky comments like that will drive away future owners.
I think what was meant to be said is that Sonys PS3 appeals more to Nintendo fans than the XBOX 360. Not to get rid of your Wii. I find that most of my friends that are BIG N fans do own PS3 over 360. Most 360 owners are BIG FPS fans and I think Sony appeals to more of the adventure fans.
"No chance will I buy a PS3. a) The Money, b) the loyalty to Nintendo. Miyamoto and Iwata would never say something like this, nor would Reggie! None of these people have ever degraded the other consoles like Sony and Microsoft are constantly doing in (failed) attempted to thwart us."
Microsoft doesn't say things like this, it's only Sony from what I've seen. In fact Microsoft told us to buy Wiis back in 2006.
i thought about getting a ps3 as well as my wii, but only having MSG4 and Res 5 wasn't enough to make up for the cost or lack of BC
perhaps Sony shouldn't be focusing on copying motion control to get wii owners, and maybe attracting more a-class games and developers for ps3 exclusively, games that couldn't be made for the wii (bigger worlds, hd etc)
Dream on, SCE
I'm not called NintendoPurist for nothing, y'know!
Somehow Sony gives off the impression of having lost faith in their own creation.
When the PS3 was announced, it was proclaimed the ultimate console.
Then came the announcement of the Sixaxis, a clear first attempt to draw attention away from the Wii. Odd, considering the PS3 was so much more advanced, why imitate the competition?
Later on they axed BC, so that PS3 owner would buy more PS3 games, rather than PS2 ones. Which makes little sense: If the PS3 games are so much more powerful and impressive than the PS2 games, why should they have difficulty selling them?
Then they pulled that stunt with the Ghostbusters games (in Europe, at least). If the PS3 is so much better than the rest, surely their version of the game would reign supreme, and have no difficulty outselling it's competition.
And now they "demote" the PS3 to a mere Wii-upgrade (the Wii 1.5?), not long after their second attempt to mimic their rival.
And that's the problem for me: Whenever I get around to the idea of obtaining a PS3 for myself, Sony does something silly to deter me. The PS3 certainly has potential to be a great console, but how is any developer supposed to take it seriously and really use it's power when not even it's own creators are convinced of it's abilities (or such is the impression they convey)?
Instead of stupid marketing stunts and unqualified comments (N64 to PS2? You've got to be kidding me!), they should focus on making good games to convince their potential buyers. But at the moment, it sulks in the the shadow of the XBOX360 - a system so faulty you're not allowed to call yourself a proper owner if you didn't have at least one RROD (those weeks where the XBOX360 outsold the PS3 in Japan were truly depressing to a former PS2-owner/XBOX-hater like me), not to mention the Wii. I really hope Sony finally gets a grip on itself, because that's the day I will finally buy a PS3. Which probably means, I will remain without one for quite some while...
However, when (if?) I finally get one, I won't consider it an "upgrade". I won't get rid of my Wii (I didn't when I got my XBOX360, either), and I will continue playing it. With great pleasure, I might add.
I did get a ps3 recently but only cuz i wanted more gun games, more Final Fantasy, and a blu-ray player. Technically you could say i upgraded from my dvd player to a ps3, but it will never replace my lovely wii.
The only reason i MIGHT get a PS3 is for Blu-Ray, but i am not giving up my Wii for it Sony!
Absolutely, its about the blu-ray player more than the samey samey, isolationist games. BUT I'm not going to get one. Sony's statement is laughable...
I've had the Wii for 2 years, spent 400 on VC and WiiWare stuff... not going to get a PS3 to supplement the Wii... if anything I'd get a 360. 360 exclusively has Banjo Kazooie series, Conker's, Pac Man Championship, geometry wars w/leaderboards, Perfect Dark...all the retro stuff Wii "hardcore" gamers like... PS3 has Blu-ray and Little Big Planet... I'd love to get some LBP, but I'd go for the 360...
Sorry Sony dude, there is NO WAY I would sell my Wii and get PS3. There are no such good games as Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. in PS3. So I don't really have a reason to buy one. If I buy another console next to my Wii it will be PS3 but that doesn't mean that I'm going to sell my Wii. And if I someday really buy PS3 and I would like to get everything out of it, shouldn't I buy a FullHD television...I mean isn't that going to be kinda expensive (yeah, I don't have a FullHD television, so what).
If I do sell my Wii to get a PS3 it will be a downgrade, not an upgrade!!!
N64 to PS2? Gimme a break! I saw graphics in Turok for the N64 that excell the PS2!
The PS3 still doesn't have enough good exclusives to make me want to throw "599 US dollars" at it, which makes it the 3rd most expensive console in gaming history. (Neo Geo and 3DO making 1st and 2nd respecively) Sony's gonna have to wow me to make me want to accept them into my XBOX360, PS2, Wii family.
I upgraded to the from the Wii to the XBOX 360, cause its hackable
This guy is a supreme moron. The N64 never competed with the PS2! The N64 went head to head with the PS1, where Nintendo had the more powerful hardware. And guess what, most people didn't "upgrade" from the PS1 to the N64 in that generation. This guy has a great way of rewriting history to make SUCKny look better.
@71:
It's only 399.99
"like PS2 versus N64"
lolwut? Try PS2 VS GameCube.
@72
The Wii is VERY hackable. Don't tell me you've never heard of Bannerbomb, the Twilight Hack, or the Homebrew Channel! www.wiiibrew.org
@74
Yes I realize they gave it a price cut, I was just quoting their fail-some E3 press conference where that line was quoted heavily, and still is today.
Most Causel Wii owners won't buy this. Because all the ps3 games are for Hardcore gamers.
I wont never change my wii to sonys Next generation console.
I had to get an XBox 360 to get certain games that wouldn't come to the Wii (Street Fighter IV) and I'm happy with both consoles. Wouldn't get a PS3 though. There's nothing on it that I want. Plus its quite expensive.
Why should I sell my Wii for a PS3 when the big black box itself had no games I'm interested in, no Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, no thanks. You can't compare the N64 to PS2 with Wii to PS3. At the time, the N64 was nearing its five years lifespan, the PS2 is only a few years old and N64 wasn't the marketleader like Wii was today. This gen Wii & PS3 came out in the same year both offer different experience but one had the edge over the other, if I want a mix videogame console and multimedia device I might get a PS3 but then again my PC already could do all that stuff and I bought the Wii for the new experience, not the bright realistic graphics (which also offer on the PC).
The ps3 and 360 motion things just sound gimicky. I have a Wii, 360, DS, PSP and PC. I love the Wii although I have few games - and I also love the 360! I considered getting a ps3 - but what do I gain? Blu-ray? Who cares when i have dvd... 360 has better online, and they'r now getting Last.fm, Twitter,Facebook,Sky TV, Netflix and 1080p movie streaming. I hope Wii makes a breakthrough like 360 did....
I will never get a PS3. I am still ticked about Sony "brilliant idea" to release from what I remember about 60 thousand units worldwide each costing about $600 dollars and people end up getting killed just trying to get one.
