Re: Saints Row 4 is Skipping Wii U

EvilRegal

In 2014, Saint's Row 5 is announced. Announced for Xbox 720, PlayStation 4, and PC. Not announced for Wii U. Reason cited: "It's a last-gen console."

Third parties will always have some "politically correct" PR reason (so as not to offend Nintendo fanboys/fangirls in case they do make a future release) for not having it on Wii U, just as they did Wii. And, just like with Wii (and before), it's because they dislike Nintendo and/or the console for whatever reason (lack of power compared to other consoles, small user install base, "uncool" perception of "kiddie console", requirement to use special console technology, etc.).

Companies really take people for morons these days. Maybe corporate distrust wouldn't be at the peak it is, if they ever actually told the truth instead of using namby pamby PR-speak.

Let's just tell it like it is, shall we? Nintendo lost third parties forever, whatever they do, as of Nintendo 64 (because they didn't go disc format).

One more thing: DAT PURPLE TOP!!!

@JogurtTheYogurt
Quoted for truth, yo! I like how you think.

Re: Mega Man 3 Hitting 3DS Virtual Console Next Week

EvilRegal

I'm happy for anybody who wants this. But, it annoys the Hell out of me on a number of levels.

First, as @3DSLuigi pointed out, what about the other Mega Man Game Boy games that HAVEN'T been released anywhere else yet? There are so many places and ways you can get the NES Mega Mans, but those Game Boy games (I think) only have their original releases on GB. They are not widely available at all. Second, as a couple of you mentioned, Mega Man VI never even made it to Wii VC! There is no consistency at all on Capcom's part (which is no surprise to me, since they've been in "Crapcom" mode). They are just all over the place! Finally, yet another NES game that is already available on Wii VC, when we could be getting a new Game Boy/GBA game! As I mentioned in a prior post, Game Boy/GBC games are better sellers, according to the 3DS VC top 20. So, why the NES obsession? Since, as we know, Nintendo is incapable of releasing more than one VC game a week on a particular system, Mega Man III will be all we get this Thursday. And the weeks the next 3 are released, it'll be the only 3DS VC game for those weeks as well.

Don't get me wrong. I'm always happy for VC support, and Mega Man III is one of the greats! The aforementioned matters still tick me off, however. I'd so much rather see Mega Man II GB, or one of the Zelda Oracles.

Re: Nintendo Download: 7th March 2013 (North America)

EvilRegal

The 3DS VC needs some Game Boy/GBC games again soon (like Zelda Oracles). I don't get this preoccupation lately with only NES titles! Titles which you can already get on Wii VC. Thinking it through, you might think that it's because old GB/GBC games aren't selling as well. Well, you look at the top 20 3DS VC games and 6 of the top 7 games are GB/GBC games (including #1, Link's Awakening DX), and only 7 out of the top 20 are NES games (to 11 for GB, 1 for GBC). That leads me to suspect that many feel as I do, that they'd like to see old handheld games on another handheld, and old console games on a console! I'm happy for 3DS VC support (especially as dry as it's been for Wii VC in the past). I'd just like to see some variety, like GB/GBC games and games that aren't already available somewhere else.

Also... at this rate, Neo-Geo games are at least going to surpass the number of Wii VC SNES games, LOL.

Re: Feature: Series Reboots That Have Divided Gamers

EvilRegal

Of the games listed, my favorite compared to the original is Kid Icarus: Uprising. I far prefer it to the two other entries in the series (though I guess Myths & Monsters is not canon). Furthermore, it is one of my favorite games of the last ten years (at least), and my game of the year for 2012. The controls take getting used to, but it took little adjustment period for me (not sure if it's having smaller hands, or what). Then, it's a wonderful game from top to bottom. Addictive game play, beautiful graphics, superb music, and truly memorable voice acting/dialogue! It is truly one of the most quote-worthy games out there, and for good reason! And, yet, it only recently broke 1 million sales worldwide, which is a travesty (something far lesser games have accomplish, simply by being better-known franchises).

On the other end of the spectrum, and this may be blasphemy, but Skyward Sword is one of my least favorite Zelda games. I realize the motion controls were a must for this kind of game, but it took away from the enjoyment of it, in comparison to other games in the series. Even that aside, I found a lot wrong with it that kept it from feeling like the masterpieces the last few console Zeldas have been. The dungeons felt like just a handful of VERY BIG rooms, with interconnecting puzzles. I don't guess this is inherently bad. I simply like the room-by-room challenges of past entries. Next, the ground & sky exploration left a lot to be desired, somehow. It felt a lot more constrained and linear, especially considering that exploration is such a trademark of the series. I even prefer Wind Waker's long journeys from point a to point b more enjoyable than the flying segments. I even the music was vastly subpar and strangely un-Zelda-like, a HUGE disappointment (especially from a game that's in a series containing some of the most memorable songs in video game history). The music while flying is the only song I really remember, and even it trails well behind "overworld" themes (if you will) from just the other 3D console Zeldas. It's hard to believe, timeline wise, that one of gaming's greatest franchises began with this game! I'm expecting FAR MORE from Wii U Zelda.

Skyward Sword's lesser sales figures are justified, from where I stand. Still, they're better numbers than Kid Icarus: Uprising, and I wish the numbers were flipped.

Now, while you all gather your torches and pitchforks, excuse me while I make like a tree and get out.

Re: Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (3DS)

EvilRegal

Was already on the fence about it, and am more so after mixed reviews. So, I'm going to try the demo, and judge for myself.

One question I have (and I don't think it's much of a spoiler, but you can mark it as such if you feel like it): Is there any familiar Castlevania music from the early entries? I was sure hoping, especially, for "Simon's Theme", being that SB is in this (though a Simon Belmont from a different universe than the one we long-time gamers know).

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Revised Approach to E3

EvilRegal

I think the biggest disadvantage of revealing so much before E3 is what was mentioned in the article: And that is media attention. Unless it's the revelation of a console or handheld, it's not likely that a Nintendo Direct is going to get media attention.

Nintendo definitely gets coverage during E3, however! I remember seeing a story about Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and other Nintendo games on a CNN tech program several years ago. And, before the Internet caught fire, I would follow programs like that around E3, hoping to see Nintendo's reveals (as back then, it was that, wait for a magazine, or call their 900 number to find out...).

So, I think lessened media coverage for big name surprises hurts the Big N in terms of word-of-mouth.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Revised Approach to E3

EvilRegal

I'm not sure there aren't too many Nintendo Directs pre-E3. There were a few Wii U surprises last year. But, we already had knowledge about most every 3DS game that was mentioned at the Nintendo E3 conference. It was more like a review of upcoming titles. Took a lot of fun & suspense out of E3.

Re: Hardware Classics: Nintendo Super Famicom

EvilRegal

Four console generations later, despite all the advances in technology, the SNES is still my all-time favorite console (and probably will be four generations from now, when we're playing holographic games, or something).

Re: Talking Point: The Slippery Slope of Micro-Transactions

EvilRegal

A couple of things I was thinking (that may've been mentioned: First, if the rumor about the next XBox is true, and it's REQUIRED to always be online, then you're really going to see micro-transactions milked. If they know you're online because you HAVE TO BE to play the game in the first place, then you're going to see micro-transactions skyrocket.

Second (and it's part of what has been previously mentioned about bad game design), you could see games made IMPOSSIBLY HARD, so people will give in and buy more powerful weapons/armor/etc. just in order to stand a fighting chance. I don't like where this is leading at all.

One thing's for certain: As this business model becomes more popular, we're going to find out who the reputable and disreputable publishers are. And I won't support a company like EA, which is proving itself as disreputable, with one red penny.

Re: Talking Point: The Slippery Slope of Micro-Transactions

EvilRegal

@Adamical
That's the point I'm fast approaching. Online connectivity has had great benefits, but also opened a veritable pandora's box, containing con games for game makers to play to exploit us.

Depending on how Nintendo is about these matters next generation (assuming it participates in next gen hardware), Wii U may be my last console. LOTS I've never played on past consoles, and I won't get nickled & dimed. God knows we get enough of that every day we live these days, in everything from bills to grocery shopping.

Re: Talking Point: The Slippery Slope of Micro-Transactions

EvilRegal

Here's the thing: Video game sales are down. The economy is in the crapper, and people can't afford games/systems like they could in past years. So, companies have to find a way to extract more money from people who CAN afford it, to compensate for the lost sales. If they can find enough people to continually go along with these con games, they'll continue to do so. Didn't EA say something about people "enjoying" microtransactions in their press release? Well, the more we go along with it, the more we'll be force fed it. I can just see getting Madden '15 with partial conferences & divisions. I love my Denver Broncos to no end. But, not enough to pay $5 extra for the "right" to able to play them, LOL. I agree with @erv . This slippery slope leads to video game Hell!

@Five-seveN
We've already reached a form of "insert coin to continue." With "Final Fantasy: All the Bravest", I understand that, should you be killed, you can either wait to "regenerate", or you can pay to revive instantly. This is after you've already bought the game. Plus, I understand there is a similar thing with iOS "Capcom Arcade", that you pay to continue, unless you've purchased the individual games. With these new credit card readers out that can be connected, for example, to iOS devices, it'll soon have the feel of "insert coin" too.

Re: Nintendo - "Innovation is Important" for the 2D Mario Series

EvilRegal

My only complaint is the sheer amount of recycled music. Some of it was reused for the FRIGGIN THIRD (or fourth) STRAIGHT GAME!!!

Remember when we got brand-new music for every new Mario game (even the staples, like Underground, we're remixed)? Not anymore. What, can they only afford to pay a composer for a handful of new songs at a time? It's ridiculous.

I hope the next Mario doesn't have the "NEW" moniker, because I know it would mean OLD music! Not asking for musical innovation. Just an actual new soundtrack.

Re: The Legend of Zelda Oracle Titles Coming to Japanese 3DS Virtual Console

EvilRegal

Is there something wrong with me, that I am as excited (or more) about this announcement as others this year? The original releases came at a bad time for me, and somehow I just never got them.

Now, here in 2013, they're the only gaps in my Zelda resume! I've beaten each and every Zelda game, except these two (I'm not EVEN counting the CD-I abominations ). Finally, I'll be able to fill them AND experience two games that directly follow A Link to the Past in the timeline!

Oh, how perfect it would now be if they announced the oft-mentioned LttP remake for 3DS now!

Re: Review: Castlevania (3DS eShop / NES)

EvilRegal

Throwing my worthless two cents in, without any experience in video game reviewing, I'll say this: I think Super Castlevania IV is the purest representation of what Castlevania is. The wide array of classic horror film monsters (boss and non-boss), the creepy environments/atmosphere, a superb and fitting soundtrack, a more skilled Simon Belmont able to whip more than just left and right (who you can believe is capable of accomplishing the task before him). Everything is bigger and better than the NES Castlevanias. It's like the step up that A Link to the Past was from the original Zelda (ironic that in the case of both Zelda & Castlevania, the second installment is the "black sheep"). Being a "remake" of CV I, I imagine it may be the Castlevania that the development team would've made years before in the original, if not for the NES' limitations.

That's just the Castlevania aspect to it. Going on the video game aspects of it, I find it to be one of the greatest games of all time, and certainly in my personal top 10 (I've played too many games to assign solid numbers).

Finally, I'd like to point out that, as far as video game music is concerned, it is beyond amazing! If I pried open the SNES while playing it, I'd expect to find a tiny orchestra! Truly an amazing score, even by today's standards (actually, I haven't played anything lately that comes close to SCIV).

Thinking of Castlevania's former greatness makes me mourn for its current state. I the upcoming 3DS title restores some of its shine (though I don't have high hopes, being based on the reboot).

Re: Renegade Kid "Certain The Wii U Will Have an Excellent Future"

EvilRegal

Good to hear of someone having faith in Nintendo. Sometimes, I think Nintendo should do as an article at another site suggested they do. Forget third parties who won't support them. Don't pursue them anymore. Nintendo has been bending over backwards trying to keep third party support since the Nintendo 64 days, with little luck. Maybe they should forget those that are tepid in their support, keep running with developers like Renegade Kid, and overpower Sony & Microsoft with the unrestrained force of the greatest IP lineup in all of gaming. A lineup that is a veritable video game version of the Yankees' famed "Murder's Row!" Then, let your Ubisofts of the world come crawling back on their hands and knees!

Re: 3DS Has The Potential To Find You A Partner

EvilRegal

What I want to know is will it help me land one of (or all of ) my Big Three: Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, and Anne Hathaway (yeah, she's married... doesn't bother me )? If so, count me in. Otherwise: "Valentine's Day? BAH, HUMBUG!"

Re: Nintendo Download: 14th February 2013 (Europe)

EvilRegal

Castlevania is great! Still, I Wish Konami would hype Mirror of Fate by releasing an unreleased title, like Castlevania: Bloodlines.

Getting these duplicates on 3DS VC is starting to annoy me, when there are so many titles yet to see the light of day on any VC ONCE.

Re: Activision's Bobby Kotick Is Disappointed With The Launch Of The Wii U

EvilRegal

Does this mean we can officially referring to Nintendo consoles as "kiddie consoles?"

@AbeVigoda
I doubt that there is anybody on Earth who solely, 100%, likes the things society's stereotypes deem that a certain age group/gender/race is supposed to like.

I'm 36 year old male who loves football, hockey, Die Hard & Lethal Weapon films, good ole' fashion Rock 'n Roll, and hot women in lingerie. I also love Nintendo games/consoles, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and chick flicks. Only reason I've not tried Skylanders is it gives me something else I'd be driven to collect. Also on the poor side at this point in time. So, sue me.

Re: Developer States That Wii U Woes Were a Focus At DICE

EvilRegal

To quote political guru James Carville, "it's the economy, stupid." And, stupid is in reference to the MORONS in question in this article.

Being industry people, you'd think they'd be aware that a lot of people can barely gather enough mony for food, much less a $350 gaming system (and more expensive games). Are they REALLY expecting Wii Us and games to sell like hot cakes right now, are they fools, or are they so in love with Sony & Microsoft that they want Nintendo to fail?

The economy isn't what it was when Wii, PS3, and X360 hit the market in the mid '00s. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. All you have to do to find out is look for work and try to pay your bills. Has anybody ever heard of "reasonable expectations." Guess when it comes to greedy companies making money, no such things exist.

I am so sick and tired of the Wii U negativity. With all due respect to Nintendo Life (my favorite gaming site), is there no good Wii U news out there to report?

Re: Reaction: The Rayman Legends Delay Is a Low Blow, But The Apocalypse Isn't Here

EvilRegal

I'm personally not going to actively boycott the game over (I said "game over", but didn't mean "game over", heh heh) this delay. It does mean I'll likely spend what few gaming rupees I have on something else, and am far less likely to give Ubisoft any future business, as they seem especially disreputable to me (which is saying something given the current state of gaming).

Honestly, I'm pretty much already over this. As a Nintendo fan of some 30 years, who has seen countless cold shoulders from third parties since the Nintendo 64 days (starting with SquareSoft jumping ship), I'm used to being shunned.

It's news like today that is disconcerting to me. And it involves modern day Square, Square-Enix. Not much has changed since Square took their talents (and Final Fantasy VII) to Sony. Today, Square-Enix announced "Murdered: Soul Suspect" for PS3, X360, and PC. Didn't read "Wii U" anywhere in there, did you?

I thought that, for the few months that Wii U was going to be the most powerful platform, that it would see some of the games reserved for PS3 & X360 in the Wii days. But, no: Third parties hate/are indifferent to/whatever the Wii U to the degree that they're passing it over for ports, just like it was the old Wii. Third parties still prefer two old consoles from the middle of the last decade.

It's looking more and more like Wii U is going to be a one-man Nintendo show to an even greater degree than the Wii, because there is just no interest whatsoever in developing games on Wii U. So, news like this today of Wii U being passed over just like its far-less powerful predecessor, in favor of also-weaker hardware, is troubling to say the least. Even more so than Ubisoft's betrayal after being the Wii U's biggest cheerleader for a while.

I'd love to know what is so damn awful about the Wii U to developers (beyond it's thus far small user base). It's a great system with such potential. Or maybe they're too lazy to work with something that has potential, and prefer to "phone it in."

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

Somehow, I don't think the tremendous response to this, here at NL and elsewhere on the Internet, is just about Rayman Legends' delay. I think this is months of frustration and disappointment coming to a head. On top of the empty release calendar, hardly a week goes by that you don't hear something negative about Wii U. Poor sales figures, news of another AAA title that a publisher has no intention of bringing to Wii U, a prominent game developer ripping the Wii U hardware, Patcher or some Industry analyst saying Wii U is doomed and Nintendo needs to leave the hardware business, game delays, various frustrating/puzzling news from Nintendo itself... I think it's come to it that fans are really getting fed up. And this is after the system itself (along with its launch lineup) being dissed for its name and lack of power from the time of its unveiling at E3 2011.

This is all even more aggravating, because I think a lot of us saw these problems coming, with Wii U barely more powerful than half decade-old consoles and about to be a generation behind again, just as Wii was. I think the Wii U needs a 180 turn around worse than 3DS did, because it has some horribly bad mojo and negativity behind it right now. That can't make it very attractive to third parties OR potential console owners.

@RenatoSB
I just fear the day that we read "Mario is no longer a Nintendo console exclusive", or "Zelda is no longer a Nintendo console exclusive."

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

I wonder when things first started going south between Nintendo and third parties? With then-SquareSoft, when they jumped ship to PlayStation, because they didn't make Nintendo 64 disc-based?

@Rect_Pola
I'm sure they wouldn't give in to Nintendo fan demand for games they've released on other console, with accompanying "by popular demand" press release. Nintendo fans have a bad reputation, that I think hurts console and handheld support, and that is that they'll "only buy first party games in huge numbers." And I don't think it's necessarily true, but third parties use it and lack of console power for an excuse.

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

@moomoo
Glad to hear there will be no changes. And I would hope they do something more. Ubi has some serious making up to do with Nintendo & its fans now, and I would hope for some bonus content to help make this right. Not holding my breath, though.

Oh, for "wirty dord" euphemisms, you could use "birds and the bees", "coitus", "reproduction", and "procreation" for one of them (or "interpersonal relations", as Ducky once said on NCIS ). For the other, you could use "excrement", and "defecation" has such a nice ring to it.

@everybody/pony
Just thought of something: Nintendo fans are blessed with games with "Legend" in the title, but cursed with "Legends" in the title. Adding that "s" is a sure sign of trouble! So, bigger outrage: Mega Man Legends 3, or Rayman Legends?

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

I have no problem with it being available for other console owners. I have a PS3 AND X360 myself! I do have a problem with this shabby treatment of Nintendo and it's fans, though, when it was already delayed once and was so close this time.

And there is no upside for those who wanted it on Wii U. It wouldn't surprise me if features on the GamePad were "dumbed down" or eliminated, in order for the three versions to be "equal", in an effort to keep from ticking anybody off. But, Nintendo fans will be ticked off and shun the game because of the delay, and because they could eliminate features that they were going to get when it was exclusive.

Plus, it irritates me, as I mentioned before, because there's no way in Hell there would be this delay if the roles were reversed. If it were originally scheduled for PS3 & X360, they would get it on time without a hitch, and Wii U would get it months later. How many times has that happened to Nintendo consoles, getting a port much later? The salt on the wound is that this delay is for the sake of systems over a half decade old rather than for the next Sony/MS systems.

3rd parties are just abandoning ship, because they were reluctant about Wii U to begin with, and are now excited about PS4/X720. Now we have to hope Nintendo turns it around, like with 3DS, or we're going to see one empty release calendar, save for first party games.

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

@Knux

With the significantly larger user base they've built by a head start of many years over Wii U, there's a pretty good chance the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will outsell the Wii U version regardless of how Wii U owners react to this news. Then Ubi will STILL say, "well, our games don't sell on Nintendo consoles, because Nintendo gamers only want 1st party offerings... better scale down our Nintendo support."

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

EvilRegal

I was only on the fence about getting this, but this a real BLEEP move by Ubisoft, only weeks from release and after it's already been delayed once. Obviously, they're concerned that sales will be weak, but I'm not sure such an extreme move is justified. Isn't ZombiU the third best-selling game on Wii U?

Aggravating thing about this, as has been pointed out in the thread, is that third parties would NEVER delay a game's release by many months in order to release it on a Nintendo platform. Ubisoft is proving themselves a fair-weathered supporter of Nintendo, and after all the public support of them before. I guess they're going to drop out as a Wii U supporter next because they didn't see the results they wanted in, what, almost 3 whole months? And don't you just love the positive press spin they try to put on moves like this, when it's clear as day that this is a big "eff you" to Nintendo and Wii U owners?

It does make me worry for Wii U's future. 3rd party support is already weak, at best, and now one of its biggest supporters is wavering. Then, there is only Pikmin 3 in the near future, 1st party-wise. I knew going in that the Wii U may be "The Nintendo Show", with Nintendo mostly supporting it by themselves, but there most of the good stuff from Nintendo is miles away!

Seems like every day there is more bad news Wii U. Oh well, still doing better than Vita... Right? :/
