When THQ sold off its assets at auction earlier this year, Volition ended up in the hands of Koch Media, which has naturally now taken on the Saints Row franchise as a result.
Koch Media denoted the series to Deep Silver, which has now confirmed the first game to be released post-THQ will be Saints Row 4. It's even been given a release date, but unfortunately it won't be coming to Wii U.
The new game will arrive in North America and Europe on 20th and 23rd August 2013 respectively for all "current-gen consoles". Based on that it appears it will be made available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It has been confirmed that "current-gen" does not include the Wii U.
Saints Row has eluded Nintendo systems for a while now. The original nearly made it onto the GameCube but was scrapped due to the Wii's release, and it almost made it to the 3DS in 2011 with Saints Row: Drive By, but unfortunately the game was cancelled.
What are your thoughts on this? Were you hoping the Saints Row franchise would make it to Nintendo's system? Let us know by dropping a comment below.

At least they count the Wii U as next-gen unlike a lot of stupid devs (aka EA)
I can understand that, unless they happen to put it on the Nextbox or PS4.
Will only be on "current-gen consoles"............... WTF!
"current-gen consoles"... so where is the Wii announcement
And then when Saints Row 5 comes around, it will skip the Wii U. I'm calling it right now.
In any case, I'd probably buy it for the PC. Now that THQ no longer have their talons in the franchise, hopefully it won't have so much excessive DLC.
The graphics on the Wii U are current gen (sorry to be hateful but...) not next gen, so it's got to be something more than that.
I had no plans on buying this game and even if I was it wouldn't be for my Wii U.
I had no idea that Saints was gonna be on the GameCube, but I was looking forward to the Saints Row game coming to 3DS before it got cancelled . Anyways looks like I'm getting Saints 4 on 360.
What a relief
These people are idiots.A generation tells how new the system is.Wii U is the newest system,so it IS next-gen.People need to get their freakin' facts straight.Good thing I'm selling my 360 soon.
Uh... who needs Saints Row anyways...?
People, if we're basing "current gen" on release date and not the actual technology, then that portable N64 a few articles back is "current gen" too.
Otherwise, if you're sensible, you'll base generations on comparable technology. If PS4 is the current gen (or will be by the time this comes out), then the Wii U is not current gen. It is previous gen. It is comparable to the PS3 / 360 (before anyone blubs that Wii U is a bit more powerful than PS360, note I said comparable and not identical).
Anyway, it's not surprising that this isn't hitting Wii U. High development costs for a poor-selling console with an infamously volatile fan base towards third-party products, and hardly what you'd call a guaranteed ROI?
Edit: Skim reading ftw! Disregard this~
@Joshers744 O RLY? Ever see Need For Speed Most Wanted? It looks like poop on the Xbox 360
Part of me wants to say its a shame that this isn't hitting Wii U because it's a fantastic series. Then I remember that I wouldn't want to play it on Wii U knowing that there's a far, far superior version on other platforms. I'd rather buy it for PS4.
It's a bit crappy anyways.
That doesn't mean they can't release it on the system.Games like Mass Effect 3 and even Black Ops II made it on the Wii U and so can this game.
That portable N64 is current gen, you couldn't make a portable N64 back in those days, just like you couldn't make something with PS3 and 360 graphics about the size of the original Wii! Is your tablet last gen because it isn't as powerful as your gaming tower?
You are confused Raylax. The Wii U is indeed Current Generation, not prev-gen. That N64 isn't even in any category in this case, it's just a case mod, not an actual released console. With your logic, the 3DS is previous gen, because it's inferior to the PS Vita. Obviously saying that is not true at all, but yeah.
Also,if it has to do with tech,then the Wii U is current-gen with the GamePad and full HD which is better than the Crapbox.
Exactly as Fudge says.
The way I see it, what is "current gen" is what is being supported by the companies at the current time. It has nothing to do with tech.
The Wii U is Nintendo's current generation of home console, regardless of its specs. You can say it has last gen tech, but it doesn't change the fact that it's the current generation that Nintendo is supporting and thus is a current gen console.
Sometimes I think people forget what the term "current gen" "last gen" and "next gen" mean.
@Raylax But, it's not coming for PS4.
someone should tell them current gen is gen 8, wii u, they mean it'll be on last gen consoles.
I thought Wii U, Vita, and 3DS were current gen....
This is such a semantics debate that doesn't mean anything, lol!
At least SOMEONE's referring to the Wii U as next-gen.
Yea! that's more money that I don't have to give to lame publishers!
Oh well, that sucks. Back to playing some games.
I really dont care for this gane, I mean GTA 5 is coming soon and this game is just too crazy for my liking. I'd really hope GTA 5 made it to the Wii U, on the other hand, that would be huge.
Maybe they'll change their mind when the Wii U sells a lot more.
Wow. Yet another game not coming to Wii U.
This game's been in development for like less than a year...
...Do any of you guys really think this is an important loss? It isn't, just in case.
Well, good to see that these guys aren't idiotic with their terminology.
@3Dash
Some people aren't ready to move onto the 8th generation. So they ignore it until they see the 720 and PS4.
This is understandable considering the fact that THQ is low on budget at the moment. Also, it's good to see that they didn't just exclude the Wii U for some stupid reason, they excluded all the next gen consoles. This doesn't mean that Saint's Row 5 Will not be on the Wii U. (If THQ will release by then). It's a matter of time.
@Sparkticle
THQ no longer has anything to do with this series. They're dead, and Saints Row now belongs to another company.
@Koto Don't know if I read the article wrong, but I did see a couple of words there about THQ.
Woo Wii U's next gen! And isn't the graphics better than xbox and whatnot? its nowhere near as good as ps4 and next gen but its not current gen, if i remember correctly.
No. It has little to do with the Wii U being a "next gen console" and more to do with the publisher simply not wanting to risk putting it on the Wii U.
Who needs Saints row and GTA. We have lego city ! Stop moaning !
if i knew how to do the little font and type sarcasm in i would trust me
as if anybody will care about a toilet paper game like saints row when watch dogs is round the corner as well as gta 5
Ha! I guess the Wii U is just too good for this current-gen game!
AWESOME! I can't stand this mess anyways. Good riddance.
@Raylax Which of course isn't going to happen by the looks of it since it's "current gen" exclusive unless you intend on playing it on PC.
@Joshers744 I'll say this before and ill say it again, if you are basing what "Next Gen" is by graphics you are sadly mistaking. Wii U is a tad bit more strong than the 360 and PS3. The ps4 is as weell, it is only a tad stronger than current gen. Yes I did watch the Playstation conference and it looked a slightly bit sharper than current gen. Besides, I personally think those games and demo were running on a pc with supposedly PS4 tech setting. Anyway, I think people still consider Current gen the PS3 and xbox 360 Era because the other 2 system havent come out yet. As for the game, if its anything like SR3 I really hope it doesnt even come out because that game was extremely disappointing.
@Sparkticle Koto is right, unless u didnt hear THQ went Bankreupt and doesnt exist anymore. You did see some THQ words in there but if you read again, he says "post-THQ" and "THQ sold off there assets".
Meh.
I don't think its a huge loss...most open world titles don't appeal to me anyways
Saints Row is a fantastic series and anyone trashing it is legitimately insane.
I think Nintendo is in trouble for the U's life cycle.
Its a last game gen that has been in developement for how long now? Its the exact sane reason Tomb Raider and other late previous gen games are not coming to wii u.. it has to do with dev cycle and a commitment to a fair amount of resources the publisher doesnt want to spend.. blame it on the wii if anything..
Meh.
In 2014, Saint's Row 5 is announced. Announced for Xbox 720, PlayStation 4, and PC. Not announced for Wii U. Reason cited: "It's a last-gen console."
Third parties will always have some "politically correct" PR reason (so as not to offend Nintendo fanboys/fangirls in case they do make a future release) for not having it on Wii U, just as they did Wii. And, just like with Wii (and before), it's because they dislike Nintendo and/or the console for whatever reason (lack of power compared to other consoles, small user install base, "uncool" perception of "kiddie console", requirement to use special console technology, etc.).
Companies really take people for morons these days. Maybe corporate distrust wouldn't be at the peak it is, if they ever actually told the truth instead of using namby pamby PR-speak.
Let's just tell it like it is, shall we? Nintendo lost third parties forever, whatever they do, as of Nintendo 64 (because they didn't go disc format).
One more thing: DAT PURPLE TOP!!!
@JogurtTheYogurt
Quoted for truth, yo! I like how you think.
@dragon_rider
You have won the internet for today.
@3DSonicPizzaHD How? By saying a game looks better on a 5 month old console than on a 7 year old console? Wouldn't really call that a win.
@SteveW Deep Silver are pretty awesome, actually.
Any of you Nintendo-only fans who are saying "Who cares about Saints Row" are really missing out. It's a series which takes gaming back to it's core characteristic; Fun. If you're gonna be fanboys, don't be dumbass fanboys.
@DkFluttershyGuy your probably right, but i think if they tried to use the "lack of power" excuse this time around it definatley a sign that they just dont like Nintendo. The difference in power this coming gen isnt a huge gap anymore. So i really dont think any devs have that excuse anymore. Although some have said it, I think it was proven that the CPU works differently then normal console cpus.
I don't see the appeal in running around whacking a bunch of 13 year olds with an oversized dildo... Does this make me hardcore or something.
"Current-gen consoles only"... wow, using the Wii U's status as a next-gen console as a lame excuse to snub it... that's actually cleverly worded! Seriously though, the statement would have been appreciated more if they were honest enough to say "We're not releasing it on Nintendo consoles". Jeez, if the PS4 was out, that's what they'd have said.
All we need to do is wait 'till next E3. Then the Wii U'll start sellin' like candy, third-party devs will crawl their way back here, and we'll laugh at 'em. Seriously, what--[erupts into incomprehensible gibberish]
After seeing my younger brother use that annoying hopping into a car then bobbing your head up and down animation over and over again in SRIII, I can say this series has absolutely no appeal to me.
Aww poop what a surprise I was really looking foward to playing a game where I could run around naked and smack people with big puple ding dongs. sarcasim
LOL I'm hoping and praying much more that GTA lV makes to the system then this wannabe.
This reminds me of a certain article I read.
http://www.p4rgaming.com/?p=1406
They need to just admit they don't like Nintendo and face the backlash!
Saints Row is infantile and it spits it the face of the games-as-art debate. But, it's yet another game that won't be on the Wii U. The lack of support for this console (which may just be my favourite console of all time) is disheartening.
Let's be honest, Nintendo should've said "forget the Gamepad" and focused all their money and resources into creating a more powerful console. Then maybe third parties would take the U way more serious. Right now, it's a lame duck and Nintendo doesn't even seem like they care about the thing themselves. The place needs restructured badly.
Nintendo shouldn't have counted on all its fan buying another under-powered system that has more restrictions and less positive features than its competitors. You can only demand your fans play by your strict rules for so long before they eventually abandon you.
@Steveovig
You make it sound like Nintendo has that kind of resources and money. They aren't sony or Microsoft who have things to go back on. It doesn't matter if Nintendo makes a powerful console, the general audience is NOT going to go to nintendo for that type of experience.
In the end, it wouldn't matter even if they DID focus all their resources, because sony would throw some stupid gimmick in at the last minute and win over. Its not worth the time and trouble. I like that Nintendo doesn't try to appeal to the average tom dick and harry developers, and goes for the more unique and innovative ones.
I can live with playing Saints Row on another console, and playing truly unique games on the Wii-u.
Tell me, where are these truly unique games at? Zombi-U is the only one that I can see. There's barely any games out there right now and not many coming in the next few months until the fall at least. Does it sound like Nintendo cares a lot about this console making it? You can only count on Nintendo consoles for one reason and that's Nintendo games, and I'm tired of that. I want more than just Nintendo games on my Nintendo console. I was counting on Nintendo to change things finally with the U and it's not going to happen. The U will get lost in the shuffle more at the end of the year and by 2014, it'll be business as usual with nothing but Nintendo games to play for the thing.
I'm as diehard a Nintendo fan as you can get but I can't sit back and calmly watch as Iwata and Reggie and other half-heartedly run Nintendo into the ground.
@DrDaisy
Yeah that terrible strict attitude they have of making games that are just games, not horrible interactive movies. God dang them for making video games and selling them to us!
You know why I hate sony? They spent most of their press conference talking about stupid crap. Like how the cars shine with the new graphical power, how it reflects light, gloss and all that useless crap. It doesn't matter if the game isn't fun. No one talked about how much MORE content they could bring to the games, just how much prettier the could make it.
Devoting huge amounts of time to making game pretty is a waste of effort money and resources. In the end, if a game isn't fun, it doesn't matter. Because the next generation is just going to blow it out of the water, so why matter about graphics? Most games I hear people rave about from the PS1 and 64 days were huge, expansive games for that time period.
Games are tiny by comparison now, focusing mostly on stupid crap that appeals to the non-gamer and the true lightcore player.
@Steveovig
Because a few months is plenty of time to make hundreds of unique games. Your point is moot. "High processors" don't mean crap if no one uses them. Very few games even touched on THIS generations console power, and the few that did will be forgotten the moment their sequel comes out.
Where as Nintendo makes games like Super Mario world and mario 64, that are remembered forever. That is the point I'm making.
Above all, once again, your niave belief that nintendo has the resources to do the same things microsoft and sony does is enough to make me think there is no merit in your argument.
Lets look at it like this. Sony is a multi billion dollar corporation that has made electronics for longer than most people posting here have been alive. Sony has a huge market to fall back on. So what if the PS3 fails, or the ps4 fails, even if they invest way more money than they should into it, they can always fall back on their laptops, phones, tvs, what have you.
Microsoft is a software and hardware developing company that is helmed by some of the richest people in the world. They've even gone on record to say they whole reason they created the Xbox was to just see if they COULD enter the industry. If the new xbox fails, they can fall back on their overpriced crappy software.
What does nintendo have? Games, games and games. If they make a console that FAILS, its huge blow to the company. No one thinks like this, why would nintendo invest time and money into making a pretty console just so sony can wait to one up them later? They will never be able to compete -on that level-. No one understands that. You're never going to get a Nintendo console that will play Crisis, its time to get over it. Its not a huge loss. Above all, explaining this to someone that obviously has no idea or common sense as to how the general industry works is just pointless. I'm happy to have wasted my time.
At the end of the day, when the PS4 and new xbox comes out, and it costs a small fortune of a second world country and six virgins to make a single game, we'll see a lot of companies turning to the Wii-u to make games that have unique interface and cheap developing budget. Just like all the indy game developers go to the PC.
No one is thinking about the future, and just how MUCH damage new consoles are going to do to the industry.
Worst of all, no on is buying new hardware anymore. Not even the newest ipad sold nearly as well as they wanted. Its time for people to realize, that we are in a era in which people one longevity.
Lol, we should just accept that we'll never get the games that Sony and Microsoft consoles get. That's a good one.
The Gamepad was a dumb idea, point blank. Nintendo will never grow if they don't start appealing to other gamers besides Nintendo fans. If Nintendo had not wasted their time developing idiotic gimmick technology like the Gamepad and instead focused on a normal, more powerful console they would be getting next-gen games. They would not be out of the loop like they are right now. Nintendo is completely stuck in the stone-age with their thinking.
They've also been lazy with the release of the U, which probably hasn't had a good effect on third-party publishers bringing over their games.
Last time I checked the controller was the same as the competition only with a big screen in the middle... I just stopped playing AC3 so I could jump onto the far superior internet browser to type this post on the Gamepad can't do that with your PS360.
Well, I'm sure glad it's got a great browser, in that case. What a reason to buy it over the PS3 or 360.
The Gamepad is a hunk of junk with no real uses that seperate it from the other two consoles. It's a giant gimmick and a waste of resources. I just don't get it, don't you want to play as many games as you can on your U? Do you actually want to settle for less? I'm not trying to start a war but to say I've been underwhelmed and disappointed by Nintendo since June is an understatement.
Well lets see, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Dead Space 3 and Dark Souls 2 have no plans to hit the Wii U either. I see a trend here. This is what happens when you launch a console too late and miss all the good games.
Sell it then mate No one is holding a gun to your head telling you to keep the stupid thing... I off-loaded my PS3 to a pawnshop after 2 years of playing the same games over & over again and looking at the PS4 lineup it looks like the exact same games again.
Are people still pretending launch years aren't like this?
I guess they are.
It ain't about the launch with me though. The writing is on the wall for third-parties. They're backing away now and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that come the holidays, they still won't be here. Everyone is now developing for the PS4 and the next X-box and they're passing up everything else. Yet, here's Nintendo with this archaic console that appeals to zero publishers. It worked with the Wii (it being under powered) but with the U it isn't working. If the U were more comparable to the PS4, we'd be guaranteed more games in the future.
Why should I sell it? I know Nintendo will develop great first-party games. If I sell the U, I won't get anywhere what I paid for it. There's nothing wrong with wanting more though and not wishing to sit back and settle.
Yeah I get it mate you're one of the 'MORE' generation and when you get more then that isn't good enough... Not a healthy way to live life this condition
That's basically what everyone is, at heart. Why shouldn't I want more? When Nintendo gives me so little, of course I'm going to want more.
Only current-generation consoles, eh? So... how about a Wii version? =P
Interesting, sounds like the new company that picked it up doesn't have the ability or know-how to produce it on other consoles, most likely just partially finished code in their hands, they are good enough to finish it and release it, but they don't know how to do anything else.
Never was a fan. One less game made for insecure male douches.
The Wii U could most certainly run it, and run it better than the 360 and PS3.
Considering it started as an expansion for SR3 and then all of the problems with THQ, this does not surprise me one bit. Resources are probably pretty tight for the game and fans of the series are probably lucky it is even being released.
I can't bring myself to finish a Saints Row game, as crazy as they are....it gets boring. It's all too over the top and the story isn't worth getting through for me. Not a huge loss.
@SpaceApe Umm they launched there console earlier then there competitors. Get the facts straight man, Its a next gen console. Nintendo is about innovation and easily can run any game that is running on ps360. Those games you mentioned were probably to far into development and if they had started development on the Wii u, they probably would have had to push back the launch date. Just look what happened with Rayman Legends. Besides,most developers do not know how to even use the technology. At the end of this year, it will pick up speed. I think this year at E3 they'll be some third party surprises from NIntendo.
@Steveovig Darn Nintendo for making a system that creators cant be innovative with there own game. Darn you Nintendo!
Like most everyone else on here, I'm just suprised they acknowledged the Wii U as "next-gen"... O_o
I'm disappointed that THQ canceled the Nintendo 3DS version of Saints Row when the 3DS sales numbers were low, but look at the 3DS now it's sales are very positive it just took some time, good games, and a price drop to get it back on track. Nintendo needs to just educate the casual gamers and media about the Wii U and get some new and exiting software for the Wii U, and it will comeback as well.
I'm not surprised the game isn't coming to the Wii U since they don't have any real connection with Nintendo's platform.
Only current gen?Ill be looking foward to the wii version then
It's not about what you & i want, it's about what the masses want and they want the whole package 1st & 3rd party support. The masses will decide the fate of the Wii U, and they are speaking now (Wii U not selling as expected).
@DefHalan Greatest. Comment. Ever.
So one minute its current gen the next it's next gen.
Personally I think the Wii U is gonna get shafted by most developers. We have miseed out on so many titles already.
Pfffff.
Starting to see a pattern here. ..except for 200 quid more than the Wii, the Wii U needs third-party support even more.
I've never liked any Saints Row game anyway, Its just a Poor mans GTA... which I'm still hoping will end up on WiiU at some point.
@Assassin87 You are grasping for straws here. The Wii U may get a boost in sales when Zelda U comes out but that is not until 2014. What are they going to do in the mean time ? I'm not hating on the console but clearly the writing is on the all already. What big time publisher is going to put games on the Wii U when sales are taking badly ? It is just common sense. Nintendo messed up big time and I'll be trading my Wii U in for either a PS4 or 720. I gave my 400 buck support to Nintendo and they failed.
@SpaceApe all i am saying is wait for E3 to see what happens, we are judging a 3 month old console that hasn't gotten many third party games . You can sell back the 400 console to get a 500 to 600 console if u want. Nintendo has Yoshi Yarn, a 3D Mario game, Wind Waker HD remake, and Mario Kart for the Wii U. More than likely they'll come out between August and December of this year. They also have a whole bunch of first party 3ds games if u have one. They have always been big on there first party games. But one big third party publisher that is putting a big game on the console is Ubisoft. A thing called patience goes a long way. But by all means the Wii U isn't doomed. I understand where your coming for and have really played my Wii U in weeks, but I am not giving up on it because its still brand new.
@K1LLEGAL
No, by calling it the "Sexbox".
And for saying "O RLY?". I lol'd.
Will only be on current gen? So Thats the Wii too? Dont think so...but thats current gen too
@Assassin87 Well being still new is the only thing they have going for it right now.E3 needs to be huge for them because good won't be enough.
@Five-seveN Not PS4/Xbox720, it'll be on PS3/Xbox360.
@DefHalan Yeah,a Wii version would rock, but there is the PSMove and the scope of this sequel may be a bit much for the Wii hardware to handle. Not to mention that Nintendo has all but discontinued the Wii.
@Joshers744 Dude, get off that nonsense.
@Raylax How would it be superior on PS4? I mean gameplay wise, because that's what counts. I wish people would back up these claims.
It's just a GTA rip off anyways. I have the third and it's fun. But, I think it's inappropriate for the young Nintendo audience. (Dildos as a blunt weapon)
Wii U is "current gen", PS360 is "previous gen"
Saints Row 3 was far far worse than the single player campaign of Red Faction 2. After the great campaign in red Faction 1, they realised the single player in RF2 was nowhere near as good. They made up for it with lots of cheats you can unlock and a great multiplayer (I enjoyed it much more than Halo). When they realised how bad Saints Row 3 was, they added dildos. Saints Row 4 will have a fraction of the budget and will be made by a fairly inexperienced group -I struggle to see how it will be in any way a decent game.
thats good, the game is not as good as GTA
@Anvil very good point there, but isn't that's why rating are for even though nobodys ever pay attention to it.But yes very inappropriate...just saying
I'm reminded of why I left.
Bit of a shame,always wanted to play a Saints Row game,but at least we've got Lego City for our sandbox adventures.
Like with Dead Island, I wonder why so many new games are choosing to skip porting to the Wii U when they seem to be fine porting it to other consoles, as pretty much every game is developed to one console and ported to others. With Nintendo's increased efforts at getting 3rd party support for mature games I think there is something behind the scenes that the developers and demanding from Nintendo that they are not willing to give, like a game of chicken. Who needs who more?
@AugustusOxy
Actually, I was referring to region-locking, lack of multimedia compatibility, continued use of friend codes, lack of improvement on Miis, power that can barely compete with consoles that are at least six years old, limits on playable demos, lack of custom soundtrack support, and short battery life on typically mandatory controllers (unless you play next to an outlet or like using extension cords). Pointless nitpicking to you, I'd imagine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter to anyone else.
And they still used cheap labor to make Wii U's in a factory with working conditions that are questionable at best.
I'm no fan of Sony either or Microsoft either with their constant nickel-and-diming in the form of "DLC" that's actually just content on the disc that they decided to lock up and sell it for more while rubbing their customers' faces in it.
They are not even doing an e3 the writing is on the wall its been out since last year i thought the situation was going to get better but its not thank god i waited i saved over 400 bucks
I dont know how it feels to play this waiting game nintendo fans are forced to play on ps3 and more so pc i dont have to wait to much always something out man you guys have it bad
