Re: Feature: Nintendo Life 3DS FAQ

Ecto-1

@Corbs
That was my thoughts exactly. I would have thought it would be common knowledge, but I still see people getting confused. Thanks for putting this together. It is great to have everything we know about the 3DS (and a few things we didn't) compiled in one location.

@tristenj1992
That would be awesome. While they're at it, why not add Pokemon Stadium to the Wii VC, complete with some sort of connectivity to the 3DS VC Pokemon games.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life 3DS FAQ

Interesting article. One correction though- the 3DS is NOT fully backwards compatible with the DS library. It is compatible with most of the DS's library, but games that require the GBA slot, such as the Guitar Hero: On Tour games, are completely incompatible with the 3DS

Re: Mario Sports Mix Launches with Trailer and Press Conference

Ecto-1

That was one of the most bizarre "press conferences" I have ever seen. I did really like this little tidbit:

Announcer : Susie Q of Farmsdale wrote, 'We're hearing some shocking rumors that you and your arch-nemesis, Bowser, are teaming up from time to time. Care to comment on these salacious allegations?

Mario : Oh yeah, its-a true.

Announcer : GASP!

Re: 3DS Update in May Includes eShop and Other Applications

Ecto-1

@djor
True, I didn't think about that. I had seen several people talking about how they were going to ask to do the transfer before they left the store. As you said, regardless of whether the transfer service was available on launch day or not, you would still need access to the internet to do the transfer.

Re: There'll be Plenty of 3DS Consoles at Launch, UK

Ecto-1

I posted this in a couple of the 3DS forum threads, but it is probably worth mentioning here too:

For those who are planning to trade in their DSi's for the 3DS at launch- you WILL lose all of your DSiWare. The eShop and the DSiWare transfers will not be available until an update is released in May.

EDIT: This apparently applies to all territories, US, Europe, and Japan.

Re: Top Screen Backlight to Blame for 3DS Battery Life

Ecto-1

@uel
I doubt that turning off the 3D will have much of an effect on the battery life. Think of the 3D screen as two screens put together. While in 3D mode, the screens display slightly different images to each of the user's eyes, thus creating the illusion of 3D. In 2D mode, the screens will send identical images to each of the user's eyes. However, it is still displaying the image twice.

Therefore, regardless of the 3D settings, the system is always powering the equivalent of 3 screens (two for the 3D display and one touch screen). If there is any improvement in battery performance resulting from disabling the 3D, it will likely come from the system not having to process two different versions of each image, and not from the screens themselves.

Sounds interesting. I used to enjoy this type of puzzle when I was younger. When/if it comes out in the US, I may download this. Thanks for the great review.

Re: First Impressions: 3DS Virtual Console

I hope they get the prices on these right. I really can't see paying $5 for original GB games.
Additionally, I really don't understand why they aren't putting GBA games on the service. Hopefully they will at some point in the near future.

Re: Pachter: Nintendo Should Charge More for 3DS

Ecto-1

I can sort of see his point, although, being a consumer, I am glad the price point is lower. The higher price would please investors and possibly help prevent shortages like the Wii experienced early in its lifetime. Keep in mind that if a console sells out, it may help convince the consumer of its quality, but the consumer might also choose to settle for more readily available system. There has to be a balance between pricing for the consumer and pricing for investors. Personally, I think the $250 price point is a good starting price.

On a slightly related side note, Pachter says he thinks Nintendo has "blown it" with their second generation Wii strategy. Funny, I don't recall Nintendo ever saying they were going to make a second Wii.

Re: 3DS Hits North America on March 27 for $249.99

Ecto-1

There will be more than three titles at launch. Notice that they listed Nintendogs + Cats as a launch title. That game is published by Nintendo, not one of the three publishers mentioned (Capcom, EA, and Konami). Therefore, there will be at least FOUR launch titles. Crisis averted.

Re: Contents of 3DS Box Revealed

Ecto-1

@61
That makes sense I guess.

By the way there is a mic. It is located about where the mic was on the original DS (just below the lower screen to the right), but it has a much smaller opening (more like the openings on the DSi). If you look at the above picture, you will see a gap in the glossy shine along the raised edge below the start button. That is the the opening for the mic. The interior camera is directly above the top screen.

Re: Contents of 3DS Box Revealed

Is anyone else noticing the wireless signal indicator in the upper left corner of the top screen in the picture of the system? Why would you need to know your wireless signal strength on the system menu?

Re: Rumour: 3DS will be Region-Locked According to Nintendo

Ecto-1

@Marioman64
The DSi has been region locked since launch, however DS game cards are not. The region locking mostly applies just to DSiWare and DSi exclusive/enhanced games.

This is not really surprising to me. I've been assuming it would be region locked since it was announced simply because the DSi/DSi XL's were. Why wouldn't the 3DS follow suit?

Re: 3DS Battery Life Revealed

I think that they are suggesting that you can only perform tranfers a certain number of times, not that you will only be able to transfer a certain number of titles.

Re: Review: FlingSmash (Wii)

Ecto-1

Did you actually play through the entire game? If so, I applaud you. This game was easily the most disappointing game I have picked up this year, although the remote and the Club Nintendo coins redeemed it a bit ... but not much. The game controlled so poorly that I thought that my new remote may have been defective, at least until I tried Wii Sports Resort and had no trouble.

Re: Talking Point: Your Favourite Nintendo Christmas Memories

Ecto-1

My favorite Nintendo related Christmas memory would have to be Christmas of 1999. That was the year I received a teal blue Nintendo GameBoy Color. It was my first Nintendo system, and it was really the system that got me hooked on videogames. I still have it and it still works. I think I am going to go pop some batteries in it and play it , just for old times sake. Merry Christmas one and all!
