Re: Feature: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles On Nintendo Systems - A Half-Shell History

BulbasaurusRex

The Rabbids are far from the only problem with "TMNT: Smash-Up." The physics are off, it acts like it has permanent input lag, there's no online play, and there's just an overall lack of polish and nowhere near the expected amount of fan service you'd expect for such a game. It can still be a decent romp if you invite over some Turtle-loving friends, but Ubisoft really should've done much better.

@Maxz No, they aren't! 2D has nothing to do with the Metroidvania genre, and there are plenty of 3D examples, including four actual Metroid games!

Metroidvanias are basically games that require non-linear exploration to unlock new abilities that allow you access to new areas in a non-exclusively predetermined order (meaning part of the order may be predetermined, but exceptions abound).

@nhSnork Obviously, the "Metroid" part of the name refers to the style of game progression, not 2D sidescrolling, and I would never consider 2D sidescrolling to be Metroid's dominant gameplay feature in the first place, especially considered the "Prime" trilogy and "Other M." It's still a pretty stupid name, but that's not the reason why.

Also, the "Ace Attorney" games are too linear to fall under this particular sub-genre. You could, however, arguably include many point-and-click adventure games as part of it, although they won't let you skip straight to the end if you already know the answers, but I consider that to be a good thing.

Video games should be described first and foremost by the actions you perform! That why they're video games and not just another kind of novel. Really, many walking simulators out there would be better off just cutting out the interactivity altogether and marketed as just visual novels sold exclusively on PC.

Anyway, whether you prefer "knowledge node" or "MetroidBrainia," that works just fine as a sub-genre of narrative games, but there's no need to divide that game genre by story genre anymore than there is to divide JRPGs by story genre. Just read the freakin' basic story summary (alongside the gameplay description, spoiler-free reviews, etc.) and see if it interests you!

Re: Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Dev Says Converting Motion Controls Was "The Hardest Thing"

BulbasaurusRex

@OrtadragoonX They may be a gimmick for non-FPS cross-platform games (although with some exceptions), but motion controls really shine when the gameplay is designed around them like with "Skyward Sword."

Furthermore, until the Switch dropped the sensor bar, they were by far the best way to play FPS games on consoles. Dual analog controls absolutely suck in comparison (well, they're pretty bad in the first place), and the only thing that comes close is mouse/keyboard on PC!

Re: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed For Switch Has Been Updated, Here's What's Included

BulbasaurusRex

@Mando44646 The Wii version still has the much superior controls and gameplay even if you personally don't bother with the motion controls. That's your loss, not a problem with the port. Most everyone else who plays the Wii and/or Switch versions loves the motion controls! In fact, you shouldn't have even bothered buying this new version of the game if you weren't interested in the motion controls. They provide half the game's enjoyment in the first place.

Even discounting that reason, the Wii/Switch versions have an extra level (with an awesome boss fight against a mad Gungan), an exclusive multiplayer mode, and fixes the most annoying part of the PS3/360 version by turning the part where Starkiller pulls down a Star Destroyer into a non-interactive cutscene.

So it's actually the Wii version that is superior in almost every way, the only exceptions being the graphics and physics.

Re: Reggie Thought Metroid: Other M Would Be A 'Defining Moment' For The Franchise

@Clod I get the complaints about the characterization, even though it matches up just fine with the other games like "Fusion" that actually give Samus characterization, but why do some people like you complain about continuity? "Other M" has no major continuity errors compared with the other games in the series, and it even does a good job explaining a few things in "Fusion."

Re: Reggie Thought Metroid: Other M Would Be A 'Defining Moment' For The Franchise

BulbasaurusRex

@Einherjar The baby Metroid is just further proof that she isn't ruthless!

In "Dread," it didn't fully show her as either ruthless nor compassionate, as like most Metroid games it just doesn't let her express herself enough for her characterization to fully shine. However, in the Metroid games that do characterize her (the end of "Metroid 2," the end of "Super," "Other M," and "Fusion"), it's quite clear that Samus is indeed quite compassionate, and she's never any weaker of a character for being so.

Besides, the scene with the Varia Suit was mistranslated. In the original Japanese version, Samus was being stubborn about not using it until Adam finally convinced her to activate it. With that in mind, the whole authorization system made complete sense from a story perspective save for the Grapple Beam.

@Kainbrightside What are you talking about?! The transitions to first person were great and completely seamless, the D-pad worked just fine due to the corridors being brilliantly designed around right angles, and the concentration move has a great risk/reward factor to it. Throw in the new quick dodge and melee moves, and "Other M" has the best gameplay in the entire series to date! Team Ninja absolutely nailed it!

Now it does have terrible dialogue, and it's too linear for some tastes (although not mine), but those are separate issues.
