Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Arzewn

I am jealous of all the people here that say they don't notice it. I noticed it immediately and it feels like a big downgrade. Anything moving sufficiently fast across the screen feels like a smeary mess that's difficult to pinpoint exactly where it is. Especially a fast moving note in a rhythm game. Get two or more fast moving things close together and it's a nightmare as they blend together on something that requires precise timing.

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

Arzewn

I agree with them on the screen. It's good, but a step down from the OLED which feels a bit strange to step down to on a newer system. I'm not very picky about inky blacks and more vibrant colors that OLED provides, but I am sensitive to motion clarity. I noticed the screen is more 'smeary' right away.

I am keeping my Switch OLED, so I can still use it to play some games in handheld mode (Especially easy to run games where high motion clarity is a benefit [Muse Dash, Groove Coaster, Hatsune Miku etc]), but I look forward to replacing that with a Switch 2 OLED one day hopefully.

I wish Nintendo had also let me have 1 Switch 1 and 1 Switch 2 both active as 'primary' (able to play games offline without having to share Virtual Game Cards and manually transfer saves in advance), but the option is there at least even if it requires some planning and manual work (I don't have Switch Online - so I don't have cloud saves. Microsoft makes a ton of missteps and bad decision, but I do appreciate that they're the only one doing cloud saves for free)

I'm pleasantly surprised by the backwards compatibility. I was nervous about it not being binary compatible in the hardware, but their translation layer solution seems to have worked out pretty well.

Re: Random: Spare A Thought For The Kid Whose Dad Returned Zelda: A Link To The Past

Arzewn

When I was a kid I rented Majora's Mask. It showed the moon, said I had a time limit - I Nope'd out of it and returned it so fast. Haha. I do wonder how much that childhood Majora's Mask rejection plays into me not liking Zelda games. To this day NES Zelda is the only Zelda game I've played and beaten, though I do want to play Hyrule Warriors one day.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Define 'Retro'?

Arzewn

I go back about 2.5 console gens / "about 20 and some change+ years". IE, we're about halfway through PS5 now, so PS3/360 is the newest 'retro' and PS2/Xbox/Gamecube are firmly in it. A few years into PS6, PS4/Xbox One will be feeling a little 'retro'.

Re: Hands On: WaterField's $380 Tech Folio Backpack – The Ultimate Gamer's Bag?

Arzewn

Waterfield Designs' stuff is a tad expensive, but I do like it.
The first thing I bought from them was a pouch for my ZuneHD in 2010. As you might expect, I don't use my ZuneHD regularly but I do still have it and it lives in that pouch. Recently I got a NeoGeo Pocket Color and was fishing around to see if I had any extra cases, I was reminded of Waterfield when I saw it. I looked up the dimensions of the NGPC and noticed they're pretty close to, but a smidge smaller than the original GameBoy.

To my surprise, Waterfield had an original GameBoy pouch and case on sale! I grabbed one and it's great.

I don't need a tech focused backpack at the moment, but if I did I would definitely consider them. (While in university I had and quite liked a Booq brand bag I had).

If you're in school, commuting or traveling (some situation where you use it several days a week) I think it can be worth it.

Re: After Endless Delays and Empty Words, Dispatch Games Is Seemingly Dead

Arzewn

If you ordered with a credit card, even through PayPal, your card company may be able to offer you a refund. I had to deal with this when Nippon-Yasan suddenly vanished off the face of the planet taking some pre-orders I had already paid for with them.

Edit: Many, however, will only give you a refund if you're within something like 3-6 months of the order OR the 'estimated ship date'. I was screwed out of one of my Nippon Yasan preorders because it was old and I wasted a lot of time waiting for it to ship. My other pre-order my CC company did refund, the order was too old, but the estimated release for the product was more recent so they allowed it.

Re: 8BitDo Reveals New 'Ultimate' Controller Range, Compatible With Switch

Arzewn

I wonder what happens with the Y/X buttons on the wired model on Switch?

My brain is more used to the Xbox layout of Y/X, so if I could swap it for Switch that may be appealing. However, if it's just going to keep the physical placement the same and ignore what's printed on the buttons for Switch, there goes that idea.

Edit: A/B too

Re: Raunchy Rhythm Title 'Massage Freaks' Delayed Indefinitely After Online Backlash

Arzewn

@Ogbert I have a very minor disagreement only that I don't think it's necessary in the context of a game since it's already "play/fiction/fantasy" it's in the same territory as 'roleplay' by default, but that's just a personal opinion. It is kind of an "in a vacuum" type of argument though, and no media exists in one I will concede. I don't have a problem with making it clear it's consensual upfront either though, I'm just nitpicking for conversation. So by all means- I support it. It's what we do in real life, communicate, consent, start the scene so why not do it here too. Heck, racing games sometimes have reminders to follow the rules of the road and keep the dangerous driving to the game. Reminders and contextualization can go a long way without detracting.

It would be interesting to even have a game use it for plot/character development. Have safe words, different characters have different boundaries to discuss beforehand. Suddenly you have a game with all the same visuals and gameplay, but reinforcing healthy positive behaviors. Again I wouldn't quite say I think a fictional piece of content must do it, and it would certainly tonally be a little different that "moaning anime girls rhythm game, go" but it's interesting how it's not hard to turn the same game with all the same sexual content and power dynamics into a positive scenario instead.

I think I chose to respond to you because you actually have some texture and thought in your response. I am generalizing some but most of the others are just outrage (or outrage at outrage) and attacks. I saw one that said only social outcasts would play this, well, unwarranted personal attacks aside they might not be wrong about me on that one! Haha. ^^;

I appreciate you having a clear line to your view of the problems that is tolerant of (subjectively) atypical things like kinks too, rather than the usual polarized "perverted anime games bad" vs "perverted anime games good".

You can be a tolerant, loving, respectful human and still enjoy trashy, perverted anime games. (You didn't suggest otherwise, I'm just trying to remind people in general!)

Re: Raunchy Rhythm Title 'Massage Freaks' Delayed Indefinitely After Online Backlash

Arzewn

@Ogbert
I think what they may be going for is erotic embarrassment, which yes in real life if explored absolutely requires that it be safe, sane, and consensual. No question. However, a lot of people engaging in this would also enjoy roleplaying scenarios around it. I think for some fictional content it allows you to just jump to the scenario. I suppose they could have a game where the people are negotiating the roleplay up front, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I can see how it feels unnecessary in fictional media too. You already know it's make believe/play, from the beginning.

People learning any bad behaviors from content is bad, of course, but the goal is for it to only end up being played by those mature enough to have a good time and keep respecting their fellow humans.

I am a submissive in the BDSM community myself with experience in social spaces for it. I've seen people consensually beaten up, tied up, degraded, locked in cages by others and have consensually been there/participated in scenes myself.
I do understand where you're coming from, I just want to add the perspective that there can exist people that are into this dynamic that aren't human garbage. I wouldn't have a problem with them changing it to make it explicitly consensual, either. That's fine by me!

Let me put it this way.. Do I expect safety from assault when I go anywhere in society? Yes! Duh. Absolutely!
Do I find the power dynamic of a fictional situation where someone has power over me with sexual connotations appealing? Also yes.
Do I like rhythm games? Yes!
Is assault bad? Yes!
Is consent important? Very.
Was it stupid of them to use the names of real people? Yep!

It's possible for all of these feelings to exist simultaneously.

That being said, people are allowed to feel uncomfortable about it too. And Nintendo is completely within their right to accommodate those people and not allow the game on their platform. It is their platform. The same is true if they decide to release it one day, it's their platform and their call. I hope it releases somewhere eventually. I doubt it'll be my favorite game ever, but I'd like to give it a try and I had a pre-order for it.

Re: DOOM Eternal Standard, Steelbook, Special & Ultimate Physical Switch Editions Revealed

Arzewn

I like that LRG is starting to do a standalone steelbook tier, I think I'll get that for Espgaluda II. Frequently that's the only thing I want from a special edition (at most, that and an artbook [Xenoblade 3 SE is perfect for me] - I'm personally not going to enjoy the little trinkets, stands, or statues for most things, but I understand some people like them of course).

$20 is a little pricey as it's best when they're a free first print bonus or something, but it's also around the most I've paid for one secondhand when it's all I've wanted from a collector's edition, and I could always get the standard instead.
I just appreciate the option, that's all, so thanks for that LRG!

Re: Nintendo Is Offering Free Trials For Switch Online, Even If You've Used One Before (North America)

Arzewn

@FishyS I'm the weirdo haha, I don't have NSO nor PS+. I have no desire to play anything online so I just play single player stuff pretty much all the time. I do wish I could just buy the retro stuff, though, and I agree $20 a year isn't too bad.

I'm waiting for Mario Strikers Battle League reviews to see what the single player content is like and haven't pre-ordered for these reasons too.
