But yeah, thank god for Mercury Stream. They've only gone and made literally the best metroidvania ever created. No hyperbole. It's the first one I've tried that I didn't hate, I usually loathe these games. But for some reason I was so tempted to buy it, so I did, and then forced myself to play it every day so that I could not get stuck and give up like I always do with Metroidvanias. But after a few days I didn't have to force myself to play it any more. I looked forward to it. I woke up every morning excited to play it. So that really says a lot. It's the metroidvania that's finally managed to convert me to the genre. I understand why these are so beloved now.
I just really hope this isn't the final metroid game like Nintendo are saying. I suppose they could make a spin off that plays exactly the same but call them the Samus games. But that would be stupid. Just keep calling them metroid games. And let Mercury Stream make all of them.
Now I've somehow got to get my hands on a 2nd hand 3DS and a copy of Samus Returns, so that I can get more of this mercury stream goodness. I never had a 3DS before. And this is what has made me decide to finally buy one. Better now than later on down the line, too, because 3DS's will only grow in price as time goes on and they become more and more rare
I'll just continue to use my GPD XD+. It's a lot cheaper than the analogue OS, yet it's much better. It runs android as its os, and has all the modern buttons a controller should have (like 4 shoulder buttons, a D-pad and 2 clickable analogue sticks). Trust me I've tried emulating on everything. I didn't like retro pie, too much input lag, PC emulators are abandonware at this point, while the emulators dos android are constantly being updated, they work the best with basically zero input lag, and have the most features. Android is the best platform for emulation, hands down
And this GPD thing can be plugged into a TV with an hdmi cable, and you can link multiple controllers to it via Bluetooth. Meaning it's the absolute perfect complement to my Switch. I can load up Mario Kart 64 and link 4 Bluetooth controllers to it and play multiplayer on my big TV. I buy retro games when they're available, like I buy the mega man collections and the castlevania collections. But if they refuse to port games like mario kart 64 then I'll just emulate them on my GPD XD+. It cost me £170 about 2 years ago. But it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. I play it mostly handheld, in bed, like I do with my switch
But it's so good being able to, for example, get a few mates round and play the Simpson's Arcade beat em up together. It's the funnest time you can have
Also romhacks. You can't get romhacks on a switch. Well OK, maybe you can, like on the ports of Doom you can download and play classic fan made WADs (levels) from the 90s. But those are the only games I've seen for switch where you can do that
So I can play sonic 3 Complete, the definitive way to play sonic 3 & knuckles together as one game, as it was originally intended. Sonic 3 Complete was made by Christian whitehead, who later went on to make sonic mania. Sega refuse to port sonic 3 to anything these days, so I have my little handheld/home console GPD thing to play it on, with the proper original music too, of course
Well, god damn it, I've already bought too many games recently. A human can go a few days without food and be fine right? As long as they have the best metroid game ever to play they will. Hey I need to lose pandemic weight anyway
It's called "the cosmic shake"!? Getting some bad flashbacks to all the Wii games that required shaking with the motion controls to do basic things, and how much it really really really sucked. All modern consoles have gyro controls don't they? Or is it just the switch. If its just the switch, then hopefully that means it uses normal button controls. I think the only time I've liked motion controls in anything was breath of the wild. They worked very well in that, and it was only less than 1% of the game that was like that, and it was completely optional too, you didn't have to do those shrines if you didn't want to
Holy crap! I never realised this was getting released for Switch. I thought they might, after they released literally every Doom game ever made for it, but I had no idea it was gonna happen, until it happened. So this is a really nice surprise. I've never played it before. So if it's anything like Doom then I'll expect I'll love it. 90s and early 2000s FPS games are a lot more fun than the vast majority of modern ones, to me. I don't even like Doom 2016 really, it's very repetitive, endless glory kills that are exactly the same every time. I haven't tried Doom Eternal yet cos of that. But I'll definitely be buying Quake
Axiom Verge 1 was the only metroidvania I ever enjoyed that wasn't called Super Metroid. I absolutely hate the genre, to be honest. But for some reason Axiom Verge looked interesting enough for me to buy it when I first got my switch, and it was absolutely brilliant. Every other game in the genre all have the same exact weapons and upgrades, so none of the mystery of discovering new weapons is there like it was in the original first 3 metroid games. Except for Axiom Verge, which was always really intriguing because the weapons and tools are completely unique, I've never seen them in any other game, metroidvania or otherwise. And the level design is truly stellar, you don't really need to use the map that much, because you can remember places just from appearance and layout alone
So yeah, definitely picking up Axiom Verge 2 as well. It'll probably make the list of good metroidvania games, which at the moment only really consists of the first Axiom Verge and Super Metroid (and I guess Metroid 2 as well, cos I like that as well, it's very linear, but that kinda makes it not a metroidvania game too, so I dunno).
And I might just buy this new physical cartridge that includes both Axiom Verge games even though I already own the first one. Seems like it'd be cool to own.
But yeah for everyone who hasn't played the first one yet, I highly recommend it. Even I, a metroidvania hater, absolutely loves it. It's as good as Super Metroid, truly. And don't read too much about it, let the unique weapons and items you find surprise you, just like the old games in the genre did before every metroidvania game ended up having the same old tired weapons and upgrades. I'm told that excitement of not knowing what you're gonna find next is part of the point. Like before super metroid, nobody knew necessarily that there was gonna be a speed boost, power bombs, grappling hook etc. Now they're all standards for the genre, but back then it was exciting cos you had no idea what was gonna be around the next corner
Well let yourself experience the same thing. Buy Axiom Verge and love it, and then you'll probably be like me and be desperate to try the new one too
@Donutman but didn't the original Legend of Zelda come with a map you were meant to draw on anyway? Like it was in the manual? And it had a few screens already drawn out but mostly had empty boxes and you were supposed to fill those in yourself. So you wouldn't need paper. But yeah it's still pretty cool. Kids play the original Zelda these days don't understand the full experience. Cos they just have to Google "legend or Zelda nes map" or something and find one in seconds that way. And they probably follow walkthroughs instead of spending hours and hours finding every secret they can by themselves. The game is such an utterly different experience these days because of that. It's almost like a whole different game. And when you follow a walkthrough, you discover that it's a very very short game. If you played it the proper way, you could spend dozens or even hundreds of hours on it.
@SonOfVon the point of these articles is that readers of the site write the reviews and Nintendo Life publish them. So you could try and write one yourself and see if they do wanna publish it. It's only 100 words, it won't take long
Thanks for posting my review of Piffle, I really love this game, even more than I was expecting, and I'd already put it on my wishlist before it ever came out simply cos I love the art style. I really wanted to bring people's attention to it because I never see anyone discussing it online. But yeah the gameplay is as addictive as any great puzzle game is, like tetris or puzzle bobble. And it has much more variety than those games too, with all the bonus items. You can really load up and cheese levels with the items if you want, which is a lot of chaotic fun, but yeah. It can get quite difficult as it gets to later in the game, it looks very cute but eventually one level or another will stump you and you'll have to have quite a few tries at the level before you can get past it. But the early game is very easy.
I try to recommend this game on places like Reddit but nobody ever talks about it or replies to my posts like that, so I thought I had to write into this in the hopes you'd bring more attention to it So thank you
Also I have seen it on sale before. So there'll probably be other times it'll go on sale, if you wanna wait for that. But it's worth it at full price, for me anyway
When emulation is far better, why do they expect anyone to buy this? At least the alladin/lion King one had more than just the basic roms and nothing else. That's what you're paying for here, the roms. No extra features like changing button layout
At least I know now to seek out this Herc's Adventures game for ps1. I'd heard of it but I didn't know it was the spiritual sequel to these two games. But yeah, made by Lucasarts, similar cartoony graphics. Actually is one of the best looking ps1 games, because it's in 2D
@Multi Two Point Hospital is brilliant. If you ever loved theme hospital or the other theme tycoon types of games, you'll love this. It's made by the same team who made the original Theme Hospital. It's a hell of a lot more complex, but they gradually introduce new things to you level by level so it's not too overwhelming (unless you jump straight into the free mode where you have infinite money and can build using every room and item from the get go)
Anyway yeah, watch two point hospital because every so often it goes on sake, I've seen it for half price. Although it's definitely worth full price anyway. If you loved theme hospital you'll love this even more. I couldn't believe I'd put off buying it, once I was playing it and realising how fun and addictive it was
I'm a total shill for two point hospital, completely voluntarily, cos I really love it that much. Its instantly become the game I've played the most hours on my switch (except for BotW). You just get sucked into it for hours at a time
Two Point Hospital is absolutely bloody fantastic, I sunk hundreds of hours into it within the first few weeks, without even realising. And it's actually quite a lot better than Theme Hospital was (and that game was already and still is an all time classic), it's better than the thing it's trying to be a homage to. And as I understand, it's made by the same team that made the original Theme Hospital, two decades before this one, which explains why it's so good. It's not just a homage, it's a direct sequel. It's like 100 times more complex though, there's SO many more funny diseases, so many more room types and objects to fill them with, and so on. And after the first few levels it becomes REALLY difficult. But that's all good, it's not too hard, especially if you're a veteran with these theme tycoon sort of games.
It runs very well on the Switch too which is great, because the whole thing is rendered in 3D instead of sprites, so in case you're worrying about slowdown, it doesn't really have any of that on the switch version
I'm definitely buying this sequel of sorts, when it comes out, probably day 1, because two point hospital is that good. This new game, it'll be the same basic idea but still very different. I don't think I've ever seen a theme/tycoon game based around a university campus, so it'll be interesting to see what unique things it has. What unique challenges etc. And I assume you'll hirethe teachers and admin and janitorial staff etc like you do with doctors/nurses/janitors in two point hospital. I'm just wondering what the main daily goal would be. In the theme hospital games you have a constant influx of patients to cure. So perhaps "teaching" a student will be the mechanical equivalent of curing a patient.
And I bet there'll be stuff like perhaps an STD has begun spreading to everyone on campus and you'd have to quarantine them or something. Stuff like that, I'm guessing.
But yeah I urge everyone to try two point hospital if they loved the old theme tycoon games. It goes on sale all the time, I think I bought my copy at half price, and it's definitely worth the £30 full price anyway (I think that's usually the sort of price it goes ffor when not on sale)
I hope this same team makes a new Theme Park kinda game tas well though, eventually. Obviously it can't be called Theme Park, it'd have to be Two Point Park I suppose. But I always preferred the theme park games to the rollercoaster Tycoon games.
All I want is Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. Come on, is it THAT hard to port those to the switch!? Yes I play them all the time anyway, I have a GPD XD+ which I play them on, and you can plug that into a TV like the switch. But I'd prefer it on the switch, I just like playing retro ports on the switch more than on a emulation device.
The original one is already hands down the best Switch controller (and for pc and for emulating games on phone or tablet etc). Because of the turbo and macro functions.
It's unbelievable how often the turbo function comes in handy in TONS of games that you wouldn't even necessarily expect. Like Animal Crossing, or Breath of the Wild, or Witcher 3 etc. I loved the switch Pro controller cos it feels amazing. But I can't use it any more, because I have gotten so used to the turbo on the 8bitdo one.
Not to mention the fact it does the gyroscope feature just as well as the switch Pro Controller. And the macro function can be incredibly handy. It's great for fighting games for example, if you're terrible at them like myself. Just program the special moves into it and press a button and it performs it for you
I cannot wait for this new 8bitdo controller. I already have 6 of their controllers. But the reason I'm excited for this new one is not just for the switch. No, this will be the first time basically EVER that you can reasonably emulate n64 games. Because it has the extra paddle buttons. No modern default layout controller can emulate n64 properly because they don't have enough buttons. You have to do all sorts of awkward things like maybe map the c buttons to the right analogue stick. Which is awkward and just doesn't really work. With this new controller I'll finally be able to do that properly, AND it basically has a Z trigger, because of the position of the buttons
Now for the first time I'm gonna be able to play the n64 Zelda games. My life is probably gonna change forever, since ocarina and majoras mask are pretty life changing games by all accounts
8bitdo has never let me down. I'm preordering this new controller. I want it day one. It's perhaps weird to be as excited for a controller as one would be for a game. But seriously there's a reason I have 6 controllers from them or thereabouts. They're all fantastic in their own way. I can use their mega drive one with the mega drive D-pad that I think is unrivalled for fighting games. Then I can use their ones with the classic Nintendo D-pad which is unrivalled for platformer games, and since Nintendo refuse to use that design anymore for some reason, the only way to get it is with an 8bitdo pad. They are the best controllers for PC too. And I'm a serious emulator of games. I have all the thousand of roms, every system you can think of, I even have a GPD XD+ which is perhaps the most expensive emulation handheld, but it's the best, and £170 was worth it to me because I am so serious about emulation. But now I can use that handheld hybrid GPD thing, use the HDMI out to plug into my big TV, and cos all 8bitdo controllers are Bluetooth, I can connect it to the GPD and emulate every classic n64 game that I've always wanted to play but never had a chance to before
I am absolutely a shill for 8bitdo. Voluntarily. Maybe they should pay me lol. But I don't care. I just seriously heavily respect this country and their out of this world level of quality control
Does it only work on an n64 or is it Bluetooth and so can be used on a phone or tablet or pc or mac or chromebook etc
Because for emulation, playing n64 games on an emulator, there's NO N64 controller you can use for that. I've looked, for years. And there's just no N64 controller with enough buttons. So you always have to end il doing something weird like use the right analogue stick for the 4 yellow C buttons which is really imprecise and for a lot of games makes them unplayable more or less
All I want is a Bluetooth n64 controller that works for emulation. 8bitdo tried to release one years ago, but it literally didn't work. Every single one of them was broken. It was a huge scam. Like everyone who got one, including myself, found that several of the buttons simply didn't work. They weren't actually connected to anything. The wiring inside wasn't there. It was completely disastrous. And everyone's analogue stick would be constantly drifting hard in one direction even though you weren't touching it
8bitdo stopped selling them because of how bad they were but never made a new one, that actually works. They're my favourite controller company. I own all their controllers. Please please 8bitdo or someone else, make a Bluetooth n64 controller so we can finally emulate n64 games properly
Awesome. The original Wrestlefest game is still fun to this day. And since there's no good wrestling game on the Switch yet, we need one.
Side question, is WWE 2K18 fixed at all by now? Cos sometimes it goes on sale for ridiculous prices, like £3. If its not a complete mess anymore and is passable, that's probably worth it. Price of a pint. Like I picked up one of the NBA 2K games for a couple of quid, I know nothing about basketball, but it's fun
Oh, oh no, it's a multiplayer game. Sounds like it's trying to copy the Friday the 13th game, asymmetrical online multiplayer. No thanks. Unless it has a single player story mode, it's gonna be pointless buying this game, because it'll last a month and then the playerbase will dissappear and you won't be able to play the game you bought. Next!
@Entrr_username racism doesn't have to be intentional to be racist. That's why the biggest and most devastating type of racism, systemic racism, is so insidious. Because it's not a bunch of people in white hoods perpetuating it, it's normal non-racist people within systems all contributing a tiny tiny part of it, which all adds up to a big whole. So there's not one person you can blame it on and simply fire them and be done with it, whole systems need to be broken down and rebuilt.
Some people seem to think racism is only when some idiot is shouting racist slurs at someone on the street. Unfortunately it's not just that. And something can seem completely innocuous like a stupid joke in a silly movie and nobody pick up on it before it gets shown in cinemas
It's not that the writer or director or actor is racist, or something like that. Nobody is saying that at all, despite what a lot of comments in this comments thread seem to wish was true so they can cry and go "OMG everyone's offended at everything these days!“ cos they're desperate to be victims. It's just a minor thing, the movie is in hold for now, they'll edit it in a day and then release it again. It's not huge news or anything, it's not the downfall of society. It's just a dumb little quirk in a bad movie that's related to video games
The switch is pretty much the only way to play light gun games these days unless you have an old console and a CRT TV. So it's a shame more games aren't taking advantage of it. Let's get Time Crisis and House of the Dead ports to the switch! You'd have to have a cursor on screen for it to work probably, but it works well enough in Mario Galaxy
@NullPointerExcep I've bought 5 sd cards with 256 GB of space (worked out cheaper than getting a few 512gb cards, I think they were on sale) and that way I don't have to archive software, I have everything downloaded and I switch out the sd cards (remember 5k turn it off before removing the card, don't remove it when the switch is in sleep mode)
I'm thinking long term. I wanna be able to play these games in 10 years time. When the servers have been shut off and you can't download the games anymore
Darlinfan, yeah, I'm gonna do that unironically Not this game, this game has s different structure. But yeah I'm sick of 90% of indie platformers being metroidvanias. Or worse, rogue like metroidvanias, which destroys the main part of what makes metroidvanias fun, learning the layout of the world
But yeah making a platformer a metroidvania is laziness. You font have to worry then about making good level design that is fun to play. Just place everything semi randomly, in a few minutes, and you're done. Creating a fun 2D platformer in the vain or mario is so hard to do, you can spend a whole year tweaking the levels to make them perfect. Green Hill Zone in sonic famously took 6 months to make. And it shows. It's probably still the best designed sonic level ever
I know indie studios lack time and money, hence why they go this arguably lazy route. But for people who hate metroidvanias like me, I just really wish there were more linear games out there. Linear games will always be better. Like the first of the 3D batman game series that is still going, Arkham Asylum. It's still the best one in that series because it's very linear. And mario 3 is still the best platformer ever. Linear games are just better
Oh great, looks like another party game that's only fun if you have 3 other friends who've also bought the game and also have the same console, and is boring playing on your own
I remember when party games were fun to play single player offline. I don't wanna play smash bros or Mario kart online because I hate online gaming. And the switch smash bros and especially Mario kart 8 deluxe are very lacking in single player content. There's not even s story mode for mario kart 8. Like, every other karting series does have that, like the Crash one for switch, like all the Sonic karting games. But MK8D is just lazy and a waste of money if you don't like playing online
The 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ is still the very best controller on the console (and for PC too). It has a turbo feature, which pretty much no controllers seem to have any more these days. You can turn any button into a turbo button and you wouldn't believe how useful that is in basically every game, like Breath of the Wild I make Y, X and A all turbo which makes things like picking up dozens of stuff quickly and climbing stuff quickly and swimming and attacking quickly a breeze. It's amazing for Animal Crossing too.
It also has a macro feature, which would be very useful for those who play fighting games I imagine. Just program the special moves onto it and have them at the press of the button
And the d-pad for this controller is the old Nintendo one that was on the NES and SNES and Gameboy. The best d-pad. Better than even the modern Nintendo d-pad
It also has really great rumble, and gyro controls. I'm doing my second play through of BotW now and it's so much better using thks 8bitdo controller to do the motion controls for stuff like shooting arrows and especially the shrines that have gyro puzzles, compared to the nightmare those puzzles could be playing in handheld mode and having to turn the whole console upside down
The only thing I'd change about this controller would be to move the left analogue stick to the xbox/Nintendo position instead of where it is now, the PlayStation position. But it's not a big deal. I grew up playing PlayStation so I'm used to that layout too.

Buy Axiom Verge and love it, and then you'll probably be like me and be desperate to try the new one too
Re: Random: This Vintage Metroid Cosplay Is Terrible, And We Absolutely Love It
@Donutman but didn't the original Legend of Zelda come with a map you were meant to draw on anyway?
Re: Community: Check Out 12 Switch Games We Missed, As Recommended By You
@SonOfVon the point of these articles is that readers of the site write the reviews and Nintendo Life publish them. So you could try and write one yourself and see if they do wanna publish it. It's only 100 words, it won't take long
Re: Community: Check Out 12 Switch Games We Missed, As Recommended By You
Thanks for posting my review of Piffle, I really love this game, even more than I was expecting, and I'd already put it on my wishlist before it ever came out simply cos I love the art style.
I try to recommend this game on places like Reddit but nobody ever talks about it or replies to my posts like that, so I thought I had to write into this in the hopes you'd bring more attention to it
So thank you
Also I have seen it on sale before. So there'll probably be other times it'll go on sale, if you wanna wait for that. But it's worth it at full price, for me anyway
Re: Review: Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol - A Classic That Deserves Better
Re: Two Point Campus Appears On Microsoft Store, And It Looks Rather Bonkers
You just get sucked into it for hours at a time
Re: Two Point Campus Appears On Microsoft Store, And It Looks Rather Bonkers
Re: The Absolute Worst Castlevania Is Coming To Arcade Archives On Switch
All I want is Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. Come on, is it THAT hard to port those to the switch!? Yes I play them all the time anyway, I have a GPD XD+ which I play them on, and you can plug that into a TV like the switch. But I'd prefer it on the switch, I just like playing retro ports on the switch more than on a emulation device.
Re: 8BitDo Reveals Its New "Pro 2" Bluetooth Controller, Compatible With Switch
I am hype af
Re: Remember The Brawler64 Controller? It's Now Available Without A Wire
Re: RetroMania Wrestling Reveals Official Trailer Ahead Of Launch This Month
Re: Ash Williams Returns In Evil Dead: The Game, Coming To Switch In 2021
Oh, oh no, it's a multiplayer game. Next!
Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke
Re: Review: Prison Architect: Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch eShop)
@Aven it's on sale now mate
Re: Sniper Hunter Scope Launches Next Week, Get It Free If You Own One Of These eShop Games
Re: Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Appears To Be Getting A Physical Release On Switch In The UK
Re: Review: MindSeize - Slick Mega Man Zero-Style Action Jammed Into A Metroidvania
Darlinfan, yeah, I'm gonna do that unironically
Not this game, this game has s different structure.
Re: Super Met Boy Announced For Switch - And No, It Has Nothing To Do With Super Meat Boy
Re: This Officially-Licensed Switch Controller Comes With Motion Controls And Mappable Buttons
