The moment we've all been waiting for is here, folks: the brand new Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer has officially landed.
When the first images and trailer were revealed for the upcoming Sonic movie earlier this year, it's pretty safe to say that fans weren't impressed with the blue blur's design. It caused so much of a stink online that the movie's creators felt the need to scrap Sonic's look altogether and give him a new coat of paint.
Now, we can finally see the new redesign in action, and we have to say we definitely prefer this to the original. As you can see, the film is now expected to hit theatres on 14th February 2020. Here's the new official poster:
Update: Sonic creator Yuji Naka has commented on the new design, and he seems mostly pleased.
Go on, then... What do you think? Do you prefer this to the original? Are you now excited to watch the film? Still not impressed? Share your thoughts with us below.

I am actually happy with this
This looks waaaaaaaaay better! I will definitely watch this, at least to show support
Night and day difference! Looks infinitely better than before!
This is sonic. Phew.
Actually looks good now, impressed. The cynic in me would think it was all an elaborate ruse
The film still looks woeful but that re-design is a drastic improvement.
This looks goooood!
@antdickens Heaven forfend!
Wow... So far so good.. I dunno why they didn't just start off from here in the first place than needing to over-humanise him in the first movie design 🤢. Moreover, there's the modern look from the games incorporated too👍🏾 Game Match Sega🎮
SO MUCH BETTER! Now THIS movie I want to see!!!
OMG!! That is so much better, I actually want to see this movie now.
very energetic. Looks decent now.
Jim Carey looks a great Robotnik/eggman despite the obvious weight loss.
Overall looks solid enough
This will still probably be an awful movie.
Still not perfect - legs a little long? But certainly miles better than before.
Now to start a campaign to get Jim Carrey's Robotnik a lot more egg-shaped.
@Vepra an improvement like getting the sonic adventure feel all over again
@NightBeast Is there ever a good video game movie?
It will be mediocre, people will forget this movie even exist at the end of next year.
It probably still wont be a good movie, but it doesn’t look like a train wreck anymore, mostly because Sonic isn’t a deformed monster this time.
Columbia: He's okay.
@NoTinderLife I actually like The Silent Hill movie. It's not perfect by any chance but the atmosphere is haunting and the creature design is spot-on.
Yep, it looks absolutely fine.
Wait... not only the design is way better, but also..the trailer?
I doubt they reshooted a lot of the movie, so I have to guess that even the previous trailer, like Sonic model, was badly implemented and planned.
Talking of a promotional disaster getting back on tracks.
Much
Much

Better
This looks like a completely different movie. Hats off.
loved the trailer and now I wanna watch it especially with my oldest son who loves to read Sonic comic books with me
Honestly, the movie looks really good now
After spreading so much negativity in the Pokémon articles, let me tell you I'm totally blown away by the extra mile the movie went with the redesign! It went from being a "Hollywood game movie" to a carefully crafted game movie.
Many would argue the good news started with Sonic's design, but I was grinning since the whole "I was in my world, now I'm in yours" thing. Sure, Columbia/Sony did the same with their Smurfs, but this approach is way better than pretending "Green Hills" is what we were supposed to take as the movie's version of the iconic plains (and hills, and loops). Much, much, much better. Not totally sold on rings acting as portals, but I can't really complain.
Also, Jim Carrey as Dr. Eggman is just the best thing, and already was even before Paramount bowed down to the fans' demands.
Okay.... Looked better than the first trailer.
Let see if the improvement will amaze the audiences.
Now THAT'S Sonic!
I'll watch it for Jim carrey as I've always been a big fan but as for videogame movies i know this is still likely to blow hard. Sonic certainly looks better! Can't believe what in gods name made them think the previous design was even remotely acceptable.
Thank you, developers, for doing this.
I really do not understand, why they didn't use this design before and showed in the first trailer the much less appealing one. Some people might even think Paramount did this on purpose to get publicity for the movie. Negative publicity is still publicity after all.
I hope the extra work they put in for the new look will bring the people who didn’t like the original design to the theater. At least support them now that you got what you wanted (though I do agree the original look was awful).
Now that’s how a hedgehog should look
The fact that they actually listened to the criticism and made the effort to fix it when they could have just said deal with it speaks volumes. Clearly they want our money. Kinda makes you wanna see it just to support companies that give a damn.
@RareFan The trailer looks better because more of the effects were finished and they could show more scenes than the original. The other was more of a teaser with unfinished effects in a couple scenes (and of course the horrible art direction choices on Sonic himself, a separate issue!) This is how most effects-heavy movies do things.
It really does help, though. The premise was important and missing from the teaser and it helps me with acceptance at least.
Should be silly fun.
@AlexOlney praise the Lord. Hallelujah 🙏🤣🤣 what was they thinking before!
I think this Sonic is a bit too... Silly. But at least this design is waaaay better. And Carrey is awesome as always.
It was all an elaborate ruse - called it as soon as it first blew up earlier in the year.
Design is better, but it’s weird they’ve insisted on his segmented eyes and human denture-like teeth
Now this does look like Sonic.
So glad they redid the trailer and took out "Gangsta's Paradise". That didn't fit whatsoever.
Much better design. Although, I am fully expecting this to further highlight how poor the script and general concept is.
@AlexSora89,
Spreading negativity towards the new Pokemon games, never noticed.
This looks great! And it actually made me laugh. Definitely in.
Oh wow, I’m actually impressed with the redesign. I might see the movie now!
Alright... I'll bite. The kids and I will give it a shot now.
Well, I approve this redesign. I didn’t ask for it, but I have to say it looks way better.
Way better improvement.

...How long until somebody lewds him?
Much better. And I'm glad they ditched Gangsta's Paradise too. Good song. Wrong for this trailer
The design is much much better, and the movie itself does too. Looks like it will be a fun adventure for the kids, and will even have some stuff for the long time fans.
Wow, it’s like night and day. Send the animators some love, that redesign is so much better.
I mean, of course, Sonic's new design is wonderful, but is the script different? The humor seems WAY less obnoxious in this new trailer. They definitely removed: "Uh... meow?"
I'm... sort of excited to see this?
I hope this movie does well. Still super impressed they extensively reworked what was basically a complete movie already.
As a fan, this just went to seeing it day one in theaters for me. Sonic looked so good in action. Talk about a great comeback!
@Ooccoo_Jr Modern sonic has long legs...
Looks so much better. Love all the 'it'll still be awful' comments. Don't go see it if you don't want to. Or buy Pokemon Sword and Shield as am sure you know that's crap too having not played it. Sigh.
I still disagree with fans dictating what a film should look like. It's the vision of the actors, producers, director, artists etc that we're paying (or not) to see. If Hollywood had this kind of knee-jerk reaction every time fans were outraged that their beloved characters didn't look right, we'd never have had Daniel Craig as Bond or Heath Ledger as Joker. It doesn't say much for the confidence of the creators in their film that they feel that abandoning their original take on the character was necessary to keep the film from failing. On the other hand, wouldn't have hurt to have shown Henry Cavill's CG lip to the world a few months before Justice League came out!
It looks amazing! I'm thoroughly impressed, and will definitely check the movie out.
I... actually want to see this now.
@Savino The Silent Hill film respects the lore and source material!? Yet it has pyrimad head. Uh no.
I've never been impressed with a video game filn and this film looks no different but at least Sonic does look cuter here. Why they didn't go this route from the get go is surprising
@Chunkboi79 That's the problem, I'm a Mega Drive man myself.
It should have just been this way from the beginning. I don't understand how the first design was ever approved.
"It caused so much of a stink"
Couldn't have said that better myself.
And now we have exactly what I feared among other things. This is the very traditional Sonic design... that leaves you sitting through the whole trailer wondering why the entire movie isn't CGI. Roger Rabbit had the context to support the two separate kinds of visuals; Sonic just went from a furry alien creature you'd expect to him to look like from "our" world's perspective to the tangible Sonic AR hologram. Despite the animators still doing a great job bringing him to life, what's fallen prey to fanship-infested audience meddling is a lot of the sense of him actually being present in the realm he's visiting here. All for what, the original IP creator's wish? Nope, it didn't even get to be voiced or listened to until after the fact. It's all for the rabid fandom. A part of which the movie could have at the very least scored points for driving further to overdue erasure in a best case scenario. Maybe other aspects of it still will, but for now the entities which should never exist will dance on the bones of an aspect that used to.
I'm still planning to go see the movie to show at least some support to the authors and producers. By now, partly BECAUSE I still have a comparatively peripheral interest in Sonic franchise; if I had the perverse surrogates "love", "care" and "knowledge of quality" towards it like many others here - and akin to all the above that's long left me red-handed in regards to countless other franchises, - one could question if I even had any right to see this movie at all.
Despite the old design working for environment and looking much more convincing to me in motion, it wasn't something I ever particularly liked as an audience - all the more ironic that now I'm left to mourn it.🙄
Much, MUCH better. I didn't necessarily hate the old design per se, but that was way too into the uncanny valley for my liking.
@JohnnyC But the actors, producers, directors and artists etc. would presumably prefer to have people pay to see it rather than not paying to see it, making it in their interests to create a film people want to see and this go about changes like this.
It’s an ‘artistic vision’ vs ‘financial vision’ dilemma at heart, but it takes a real leap of imagination to think of the original vision being ‘art’ in anything but the very broadest sense. The film was only ever conceived to general extra revenue out of an already popular media franchise, and with this change I don’t find myself feeling anything of much artistic value has been lost.
Dear lord, they made him worse.
This is Miles better!!!!!
This is a lot better.
"I left my planet, they can't get my power!"
I can forgive the first part of that if this is pre-Sonic 1. The "can't get my power" part? What? Rewrite!
Sonic redesign is welcome. Jim Carrey still in the film?I'm out....at least until the kids do my head in enough that I have to take them to see it
@NightBeast ahh the predictive critic, just like most are. I can think of a few films that are well liked that i DON'T like. And vice versa..
Ever heard of subjectivity, personal taste?
Am not going to support this film when does release but at least the Sonic movie design look faithful the game counterpart.
@FlyingFoxy Yeah, it's pretty obvious that every criticism is subjective. But that's what the comments section is for, isn't it?
But, aside from that, I can tell when the movie is awful even if I like it. I like the Mortal Kombat movie, but I can safely tell that's it's a bad movie: cliche story, abysmal acting, plot points that make no sense... But still... it's kinda cool.
@JohnnyC while not subtitled here (and with too much text for me to translate spontaneously now), this old Soviet cartoon - and the fable it adapted - is very illustrative in many regards: https://youtu.be/hlXn2tDjHGQ
Looks much better than before but wont probably see it
Okay! I have to say this trailer looks wayyyy cooler like this. Now i really want to see this movie!! 👍👍👍
@johnvboy
I had to remind people I can also have positive reactions somehow, ya know.
That, and I had to stress out how bowing to the fans' demand ultimately turned out to work in the movie's favor. I mean heck, even my girlfriend, who's not a Sonic fan to begin with, was nodding throughout the entire trailer. She said "now that is Sonic!" with the goofiest, but also most confident, grin on her face.
The movie did a complete 180, going from "gonna wait until it comes out on DVD" to "gotta go fast and see it in theatres/theaters" in the span of... well, a trailer!
Looks more like a kid now/classic design im more of a fan of his teenage sonic adventure look
hey this looks great! not even as interested in seeing the original as a dvd bonus feature anymore.
James Marsden and Jim Carry get top billing on the poster, surely the voice of the main character should be on there haha
The design might have been fixed but the plot, however...
Better CGI sure, still suffers from the plot and Jim Carrey so I still won't buy a ticket to see it
All the credit in the world to them for blowing a good sum of cash over the rework as it nailed the right way to make Sonic look.
Well I didn’t watch the whole trailer because I didn’t want too many spoilers, but it still seems like it was written by someone who has never played a Sonic game
Definite improvement. He no longer looks like a creepy furry.
@AlexSora89 eh the games had warp rings in Sonic one and two. Also I believe the Sonic archie comics had warp rings as well
When I saw Jim Carrey humping a set piece...I knew I was done. You can tell he’ll be chewing a lot of scenery. If it becomes a hit, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. 😕
The trailer actually looks...dare I say it: good! At least, cute. The worst part of the movie, now, is Jim Carey, IMO...but that's never going to change. His obnoxious overly physical "rubber man" comedy never worked for me past The Mask, with the one exception of The Grinch.
@antdickens
The cynic in me does think that.
But that same cynic also thinks it would give them too much credit.
I hope they release the original version as some sort of Blu-ray extra.
@KitsuneNight haha, yes that's a very good point!
@antdickens
These big studios are often remarkably stupid and tonedeaf.
See all those Terminator movies after 2 for example.
I'm surprised by how much better this is
@NoTinderLife I have always thought the first Mortal Kombat movie was pretty good.
But the best video game movie in my opinion is the anime film based on Street Fighter II.
Fans: Sonic ugly.
Director: I change.
Fans: :0
I hate this roughly 1000% less than I hated the original trailer!
I hope they release the original as a special feature on Blu ray or something.
Was that first trailer even real?? This one is so much better
@Savino except Pyrimad head has to do with James specifically so if they respected the lore than it wouldn't just randomly show up for fanservice imo but to each their own on that matter. Still didn't care for it setting that aside. If love to see a new SH game Nm a movie. At the least
@Rob3008 it looks like a bit of brain disengagement to me, which sometimes if all you're after if you want a bit of light hearted fun. Personally I think it will get panned by critics but enjoyed by many, including me.
@AlexSora89 The rings as portals is no more off the wall than the rings acting as power boosts in the SatAM cartoon. I like the creativity of how they're being used.
@PixelTavern Just about any time there are voice-only actors in live action movies, the live actors get top billing. Even James Earl Jones never got very high billing in any of the Star Wars movies he was in. Is it always the right thing to do? Probably not. However, it's pretty much Hollywood tradition by this point, so good luck changing it.
@BorderlineJon I guess you expect it will be like the live action "Rocky and Bullwinkle" movie and the first live action "Garfield" movie then. I enjoy them for what they are, but they aren't exactly critical darlings.
@BulbasaurusRex Rings as portals is something that was in the Genesis-era Sonic games.
In Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it was giant rings that took Sonic to a special stage in an alternate dimension where he could claim the Chaos Emeralds, Time Stones, or Super Emeralds.
Even using rings to trigger the portal was in Sonic 1 and Sonic CD since they required you to have 50 rings to make the giant ring appear.
So, this concept is in the games, just in an altered form.
@BulbasaurusRex not seen either of those. Not sure either how you can expect a "critical darling" is possible from the Sonic IP.
@Burning_Bacon
True enough, but those rings - present even in Sonic Mania - were never known to be shrinkable, to the best of my knowledge.
@BulbasaurusRex
You tell me! MAN, that was bonkers.
@BulbasaurusRex Yeah it's silly really, wonder if Voice actor names would be better know if they actually got shown on the marketing material
@AlexSora89 I think in the comics they may have been, but it's been over 20 years sinces the last time I really read a sonic comic. Either way I'm sure they are taking some creative liberties with it, which is fine, as long as they don't the entire thing
@Burning_Bacon
Besides, Carrey as Eggman is just the best thing ever.
I like this. Wait, I like this...? What am I saying?
Quite a improvement, but its still a bit off. And it won't help the movie, it will still stink!
