Coming in 2022...

Looks alright, but also more of the same.

Yeah. No local multiplayer no buy. Game is fun but hard to play with the family. If the fix that then I’m interested.

@Northwind

Then how am i going to keep you there and splat at will? 😈

But seriously, the thing is its sometimes hard to land and not getting splatted right away. So thats my concern with it.

@WoomyNNYes

Yea i dont even do that. In the first Splatoon it was easier to do it with the gamepad, all you had to do was put your finger on the touchscreen, wayyyyyyy faster

@SquidOnTheRise I found with the touch screen you would take your eyes off the screen too much, a simple button press to see the map works better imo.

@GilbertXI BIG AGREE with all your words. The Splatoon franchise is one of the most inventive things Nintendo has done in recent memory, and it’s still got buckets of potential. Though the trailer didn’t reveal much (hence the number of people jumping to conclusions about ‘no new content’), I’m really looking forward see to where they take it.

@Octane Could they at least do say, 16-20 players at once? I think a Battle Royale is a must have for this game, it's too popular a game mode now and really takes advantage of larger maps, it'd be a shame if they couldn't do it.

@Bolt_Strike If they did larger map with 16-20 players, there would certainly be a downgrade in graphics, unless there's a creative way to do it, or Nintendo has found a way to squeeze more out of the Switch. There's a lot of detail in the current splatoon 2 maps, the glossy reflective ink, and characters.

I can see an 8-player free-for-all mode to take advantage of the new spawning mechanics, potentially with exclusive maps that aren't designed with 4v4 gameplay in mind — I'm not expecting more than 8 players as that would lead to many logistical problems; ink colors come in mind for one. Weapon balancing would also tend to be an issue, but I suppose that's a moot point as they'd rather go with the weapon pickups that featured in the Octo Expansion. Even then, I doubt they'd want to push that as more than a mere side mode for the time being, as seen from the first trailer which only showed the usual team gameplay.

Mostly hoping for a return of Salmon Run with some improvements to the mode (please have better matchmaking past Profresh), it was my favorite in Splat 2 but it's not at all guaranteed to return. Hope it lives on to see another day!

Dont get your expectations too high people, there probably wont have free for all nor battle royale. I personally cant see the appeal of those modes in Splatoon beside competing with current trends.

I thought the trailer hinted at a bigger single player focus and thats what i personally hope for.

By the way @Northwind i added you on Switch last night. If you want to join a Splatoon game one of these days.

@SquidOnTheRise Oh yea, you're totally right. Perhaps my wording was poor, but I'm not expecting any of these modes to be in development; I can see them happening, as in it's not completely outlandish as I would have likely replied had this discussion taken place for Splatoon 2, but to me they are simply in the realm of ideas, a fun "what if" to imagine and discuss. In fact, I actually tend to dislike free-for-all setups for all games anyways, it goes beyond battle royale and dates to before that became a trend!

A single-player mode of the caliber of Octo Expansion, if not a little larger, would be very welcome, but the root of Splatoon will always be the multiplayer component no matter what.

@Bolt_Strike @WoomyNNYes I mean, the way any other battle royale does it is by having external servers, so your device only has to compute a limited amount of things. But Nintendo is really stingy when it comes to dedicated servers, all their games are P2P as far as I'm aware. So I think they could do more, but you'd probably need dedicated servers at that point.

jump

@Octane I’m pretty sure Nintendo are doing an overhaul of their online and are changing their servers this year.

@jump Error, Nintendo, overhaul, change, does not compute.

I'm super excited. Splatoon 2 was almost a complete improvement over Splatoon 1 with really the only notable downgrade being due to the Switch's gyro controls. The Octo Expansion demonstrated just how capable the team is with designing fantastic and charming Single Player content and many of the changes they brought and added through Splatoon 2 were great indicators, especially with how cool and unique many of the later additions were.

The new movement options are them taking more official means of adding in some of the previous techs from Splatoon 2. The Squid Roll being a way of performing the Substrafing tech used by people.

So honestly I have high hopes. It's still Nintendo, so they won't meet all my hopeful expectations, but I still feel like it'll be a fantastic game.

I haven't weighed in on Splatoon 3 yet, and considering how much of a fan of the series I am, I may as well have my say.

Let me just say that I was never more happy to be wrong about something in my life. I thought we wouldn't be getting Splatoon 3 until Nintendo's next console. I thought putting another Splatoon game on the same console would be... kinda pointless? But then, COD gets new releases all the time, so I guess this is nothing new for shooters.

I can't really gain much from the trailer that we saw, since we didn't see a lot of gameplay, but the fact that this is coming out next year gives me hope that Nintendo is trying to add a lot to the formula. Splatoon 2 is great, but at launch, it really did feel like just an expanded port of the Wii U original. I am very excited to see more of this game leading up to its release.

I also really like how confident Nintendo is with this series. There was always some nagging doubt in my mind that this would end up like another suddenly abandoned Nintendo IP. But this is obviously not the case with Splatoon. I'm glad Nintendo realizes that this franchise could be huge for them in the future.

Splatoon 2 was in development for less than 2 years. The Splatoon team in general seems to be pretty good at working on multiple different projects at the same time. I'm curious how long they've been working on Splatoon 3. Octo Expansion came out in 2018 and there were datamines over the course of Splatoon 2's life regarding new modes that despite being consistently being worked on never materialized in the game itself. Could just be nothing, but it wouldn't be the first time we've seen the Splatoon Devs work on something that will find its way into the next game.

This is one of the games where I’m excited but it’s hard for me to see drastic improvements and changes from Splatoon 2. It was already an excellent game.
