Put your hands together for the half-genie hero, Shantae, who celebrated her 17th video game birthday a few days ago.
Yes, the WayForward mascot created by Erin and Matt Bozon started out life on the Game Boy Color in 2002. Although the character's first game sold poorly due to the fact the Game Boy Advance was already out, Shantae was able to bounce back later on in 2010 and has never looked back.
To celebrate the big occasion, WayForward posted the following message on its Twitter account:
If you're wondering what's on the horizon for the purple-haired character, WayForward is currently developing a new game in the series for the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms. This fifth entry is expected to be released "later this year" and is tentatively titled Shantae 5.

I need more Shantae games in my life WayForward please
They've had their ups and downs, but their best games, like Contra 4 and Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, are some of the best handheld games I've ever played.
Looking forward to Shantae 5!
Not gonna lie: Shantae has impressed me despite me having doubts back in the day. Here's hoping Shantae 5 is a true return to form to Metroidvania format. I liked Half-Genie Hero, but it kind of wasn't the "Shantae" game I wanted.
Wow, 17 years old, a great franchise that I think deserves much more and I hope that Shantae 5 has that success. Happy birthday Shantae!!
XD
And yes, I repeat it and someone would have to say: Shantae for Smash!! she deserves it. ^. ^
After almost 18 months (1 year and a half, that is) checking the eShop offers on a weekly basis, I ended up buying Shantae: Risky's Revenge Director's Cut for Wii U two weeks ago, at its whole price. I bet this week it gets discounted on the occasion of the anniversary.
@SakuraHaruka She’s already in
would have been nice if we got like a special bday sale or the original free.
@edgedino The original was plagued with problems that later games fixed. I'd like to see a remake of the original using more modern design elements, so the game would be less of a chore.
had a great time with pirates curse but felt let down by half genie hero. both games had stellar music!
@SakuraHaruka
Fully agree with that ,but it seems unlikely this time. Still happy birthday to my favourite indie franchise
Collection for switch please?
Shantae is great! The controls are tight, the art work is superb and the humor is hilarious. These games always put a smile on my face.
@Alexface Not sure if a collection is warranted, considering two of the 4 games are already on Switch.
That said, I think Shantae 1 could greately benefit from an HD coat of paint and some QoL adjustments. Maybe they could also include the original game as a bonus.
I loved Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. Still need to finish Half-Genie Hero. I like it, I just go distracted.
I'd like to play the first game sometime, and the second.
Congratulations, Shantae and WayForward. Here's to other 17 years.
17 years of games, an 8 year wait for Risky's Revenge
always tempted, but never purchased! What are the best versions? I may keep an eye on upcoming sales
@StephenYap3 Ya, I liked it a lot but it wasn't a proper metroidvania like the others.
We can haz eshop dizcownts?
Love this series and am praying against hope she is one of the Smash fighter packs. I really want them to remake the original game too as I still think it's the best and most robust entry in the series.
@StephenYap3 Couldn't agree more.
I unknowingly celebrated her birthday by beating Risky’s Revenge for the first time that very same day.
@Patendo - Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse are the best. The story really flows on from the former to the latter too.
Awesome. Love Wayforward and Shantae. It's like family at this point. I look forward (Wayforward lol) to Shantae 5.
Happy Birthday Shantae! Looking forward to 5.
@SmaggTheSmug ya but I guess its more of the point of the original being what it is rather then it being perfectly good.
@edgedino I can see why you'd want the original to be shown as it was, but IMO a Monkey Island Special Edition would do the game better.
Original Shantae is not a very good game. I attempted to beat it before getting to the new ones, spent many months and gave up. It just wasn't fun. The new ones are way better at this, often reusing the same enemies, but in a less frustrating way (read: not spawning right in your face and taking like 5 hits to die each, while also forcing you to grind for gems for a really long time to get any upgrades).
@SmaggTheSmug I nvr said it would be fun. but would be nice.
@Moroboshi876 I bought all of them for the WiiU and would double dip for them on the switch if they were released as well.
hint, hint Wayforward
@Dirty0814 Before I bought it I asked WayForward on Twitter if there were plans of a Switch port, and they said not now, so I made the decision.
Ohh yea I can see that but things can change. If they do I will buy them for the Switch as well. I have them all for the Ds and WiiU. I even own the Gameboy ones. They are games worth having in my opinion.
