You may remember that, just last month, a total of 22 SNES games were spotted in the Nintendo Switch Online - Nintendo Entertainment System app. Ever since, and especially with Nintendo's public commitment to "boost the appeal" of its Switch Online service, we've been practically convinced that SNES games will make it to the console in the near future.
In an interesting turn of events, though, today's NES app update has reportedly removed all mention of the SNES titles previously discovered. Twitter user @itssimontime, who claims to data mine games, has spotted the change today, with his tweet being shared by previous leaker and data miner, @KapuccinoHeck.
Games originally spotted within the app's code included the likes of Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Star Fox, and Super Metroid, all of which would have rather literally "boosted the appeal" of the service pretty instantly. Of course, the reality here is that this still doesn't really mean all that much; we weren't supposed to know about the games hidden in the app's code in the first place, and Nintendo still hasn't confirmed whether or not the SNES games will arrive at all.
Still, the original evidence (and further digging) still has us believing that a SNES version of the NES app will appear on the console soon. Perhaps we'll learn more in today's Nintendo Direct?
What do you think? Are SNES games on the way? Will they arrive sooner than we think? Share your thoughts down below in the comments.

I'm confused. What app? Do you mean the one from the eShop?
They knew it would be noticed and did it to mess with everyone.
@ALinkttPresent yep. The Switch OnlineApp has its own 'game slot'.
@Lizuka Worse - scrubbing it lets us know it meant something!
This is gonnna mean something it 5PM ET.
Just saying.
@ALinkttPresent yeah people datamined the eshop's "NES classic" app available to subscribers of the Nintendo online services.
This said the removal of the SNES data makes me wonder if it might not be simply to pre'update release a separate SNES app built on the same architecture(explaining why the data was mined from the NES app in the first place) altogether to prevent the NES one from getting too crowded visually.
@Lizuka in this case I could imagine them releasing the games on a separate SNES classic app built from a copy of the same architecture than the nes app
I think they’ll drop the SNES Online today for everyone. It will be their big available now.
Whether I stay as a Switch Nintendo Online subscriber or not depends on these SNES games.
@setezerocinco I know, I have it. It was just confusing to call it an app since usually that's a word used for mobile devices, such as the Nintendo Switch Online app. Even things on Nintendo systems that aren't games are usually called applications and not apps (at least in my experience)
I do think that Nintendo will drop SNES online today as an ‘available now.’
Maybe they are planning to release it on a new app so people don't get confused and/or don't have to be "forced" to download a bunch of NES games that they don't want as it would all be under the NES app?
I can not wait to play the "Special Edition" of Link To The Past where I start off with every item on the final boss of the game.
Thinking is in line with others, makes sense that a possible SNES launch would get its own app. Especially for visual presentation.
"Because of the recent leaks..... We have removed something you want until you all can sit and wait like good customers. Spoiled little brats.
And this is the thanks we get. Can't believe this. We are closing out doors forever"
..... And nothing for the rest of the direct. Black screen for 30 minutes
If you want to play SNES games on the go don't mess around with the what if's of the Switch online apps, just get a New 3DS and enjoy them.
Maybe someone just realized that it's odd to store SNES data in a NES app to begin with? XD
Yep. 's comin', y'all.
But why would they put that data in the app if it didn't belong there? That's the part I don't understand. About the meaning of it all... well, Golf was also inside the Switch code and was never used, so...
@ReaderRagfihs I'd love to try those.
@JayJ but it is kinda bad the Wii U/New 3DS has snes games not to mention N64 on Wii/Wii U and all the Switch has is NES games...
Give us Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 games
Edit. That’s too much to ask for
Give us Atari 2600 games
@1UP_MARIO PS2 might be hard due to copyright... but M2 said there meant to be bringing Dreamcast games to the Switch as SEGA AGES... at some point.
If you understand all Nintendo does you're a genius or insane or both at the same time.
(But yea, digging the SNES games app concept. Perfect healing balm after the Metroid Prime 4 slight delay.)
Maybe they are removed becauseNintendo knows we know about them Nd are never giving us any more classic consoles...Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn!
why have data on SNES games on the NES app??
I think Nintendo planted it on purpose just to raise interest and measure the hype, and the work is done now
Given that the app is called "Nintendo Entertainment System Online" and not something like "Nintendo Classics Online," I'd always figured that additional consoles would get their own app each. It makes sense from a business perspective too; they could potentially include the NES games in all base subscriptions, while locking the other console apps behind additional payments. Obviously that wouldn't make the fans happy, but it would probably help increase Nintendo's profits while still increasing the appeal of their service.
Besides, at the end of the day, I think most fans wouldn't mind paying a few dollars more to get access to actually good classic games.
All most all leaks a rumors are fake
Probably a September release, doesn't make sense from Nintendo's position to release SNES earlier.
@ALinkttPresent apps is short for applications
Don't want nes or snes just N64 and GameCube
It makes sense, because it wouldn't be called "NES Online" if it had Snes games, no?
I'd imagine it would be a separate app for any SNES games anyway, which I like the idea of. And the inevitable SNES controllers to accompany them, which I would buy without hesitation. Really though, I would love to see some Japanese only games getting translated too, like Earthbound Beginnings on the WiiU. So I'd love to play the NES Fire Emblem games, or Famicom Wars without having to use my retron 5 and an unofficial English patch!
@ReaderRagfihs I wouldn't mind Atari jaguar games! I've never played one so I'd love to try it out!
Maybe so that a SNES app appears tonight after the direct? That'd make sense
@JayJ Ya plus a hacked new 3DS can play the entire library of SNES and ton of others.
@THENAMESNORM The 8bitdo SNES controllers are better than any Nintendo will provide and work in all games not just the app and not to mention a bunch of other platforms.
The obvious answer is they were testing the code internally and are now launching a separate app for the SNES ROMs.
An SNES drop today would be nice, even though my wife finally got me an SNES classic for Christmas. More value for the online subscription is always welcomed; especially if they add games that were not on the SNES Classic (I'm looking at you Pilotwings and Actraiser).
Always thought it was weird that the data for the SNES games was there in the first place. I like the idea of keeping the different consoles in seperate apps.
Hopefully a sign of things to come! I am leaning more towards it being confirmation of SNES games coming to the virtual library over it being just a coincidence. If this is real I will be one happy guy.
They better be.
@Jokerwolf yeah mate I've got a couple of 8bitdo controllers, they are amazing (except my SNES one which won't connect to my PC for some reason to update to allow compatibility with Switch as it's an early model) but the NES controller Nintendo sell for the Switch Online subscribers are brilliant, although as you've said they are restrictive.
The app probably just branched it's developement internally.
I would not be suprised if they have the main branch which main focus is stability,
And then a beta branch containing the future features (maybe SNES support) that will eventually be merged back to the main branch.
The removal of these SNES related strings could just be a cleanup job.
Perhaps Nintendo did it out of spite considering people stuck their noses where it didn't belong. But I can only resolve a couple answers from that. It was a test and never going to happen, or it will happen (in the app, a SNES app of its own using that as a test bed.)
I can't think of any other rational conclusion.
@VmprHntrD
Nah, They are only developing stuff that they believe is going to generate some $ for them. Why would they cancel their development just because the surprise aspect of the feature was ruined.
If anything they should be happy that people are talking about it and hyping it up.
SNES online is happening everybody!!! Yeah yeah yeah!! Stunt Race FX yeah yeah yeah!!
Guess:
The SNES online app is a copy of the one running the NES. They copied the app over and removed the opposite console from each app.
I still would love a VC though. There's a few games on all past consoles I would totally buy if given the choice. I know it doesn't seem to be in the plans at the moment, but that's that. Thing is, as small as I see the price, it feels like they are drip feeding us old games to somehow justify that price to some people, and it's a failing tactic.
I’m very aroused...
All I know is I was back on my SNES Mini again last night and just really love that system. I even just figured out how to start adding games from other systems as well (alongside the 30-40 additional SNES games I've already added), and I've now got the English version of Mother 3, Pokemon Fire Red and Shinobi III on there too. I'm just getting started. And I really do love that system--but it's mostly because of those awesome SNES games. So, my main point here is that I'd really love to see all those SNES games coming to the Switch online service too for all the people who own that system.
@Ludovsky this is exactly what I was thinking. They built it within NES as a module and now are removing said module to make it its own SNES app.
5pm PST can’t come soon enough ::biting nails::
SNES needs a separate app anyway. Hopefully that's the reason for this change. Direct on NES game release day feels suspicious too...hope for the best, try to keep expectations in check.
Wouldn't doubt it if they never put anything besides NES games on Switch Eshop. All of my adoration for the Switch is fading quickly. The Switch had a great start. After the great start they laid an egg. Smash was the only game that was good last year. Pokemon Let's Go seemed more like a Pokemon Go game than a Pokemon Nintendo game. Nintendo thinks we are happy to only get Indies. There's obviously a reason major companies aren't putting their games in the Switch.
I just hope if they add these that they don't increase the price thinking here more content pay more! I still haven't picked up the service if they add those games I might be more tempted to pick up the yearly sub, however if they increase the price to do so we'll see if i'm as interested or not.
I dedicate the song Lyin’ Eyes by the Eagles to Nintendo. You can’t hide them lyin’ eyes.
@Alto wasn't it 5pm EST?
I recall reading it directly listed at 2pm PST(5pm EST)?
@ReaderRagfihs Only thing I remember about the Jaguar were the commercials. Don't think I ever knew somebody who owned one.
What NES app? There is nothing like a NES app. There is just the Nintendo Switch Online app. It'd have no sense to have an app for each old console.
@Ludovsky I misread! You are 100% correct
Well if they're going to do SNES games can they at least give us more variety than the games we keep getting over and over again. SNES mini owners like me are going to be disappointed if there's too many of the same games we've already got.
They’ll announce at E3 and release in September, the online service anniversary date.
@Ludovsky That's exactly what I figured. SNES games wouldn't appear in the NES app. They'll have a separate one. Shame there wasn't an announcement today but it'll come eventually.
I hope to see Contra on the NES app next month. I would love to see Crackout (anyone remember that?) and Iron Tank. They really need to do more than two a month.
Was thinking of subscribing to NOL if the SNES games came out. I'll pass for now.
Don't worry guys we will see a trickle of SNES games by next year probably and finally get GameCube games by the times the Switch 3 rolls out. Why does Nintendo not understand that people want these games and will pay for them? We just do not want to feel like Nintendo is taking advantage of us? $8 for a 20-year-old game is not good pricing. More than 1 for NES, 2 for SNES, 4 for N64, and 6 dollars for GameCube games is a bit much. Also, consider a massive discount for packaging 10/20/30 games. Fans would rain money down on Nintendo. I know I would pay, but until then I will support modding NES/SNES classic because they just do not want my money. Hopefully, the new President looks into pricing before moving forward because he seems to be more open to fanfare done right, at least in Let's Play form, than previous ones.
No mother (3) no brother (SNES) Nintendo is not family friendly 😂
They are on to us dataminers! FEAR US NINTENDO!
Has this been confirmed before everyone gets thier knickers in a twist?
@ReaderRagfihs As long as the first game would be AvP I would be cool with that
@Ludovsky that sounds plausible. I'd rather it be a separate app, personally-- unless they had like a slider that let you switch between systems, but I could see them wanting to have a unique visual style for each app.
Best guess is the games were packed into the NES Online app for development and experimentation purposes. They may have been trying to figure out how to get the front-end to cooperate well, and removing the games might indicate that they decided against it to prevent confusion from renaming the app and/or because they couldn't figure out a good way to make the hybrid system work.
In short: This could easily just mean that they're going for discrete NES and SNES apps... which, with as bad as their library management front-end is in general, is HIGHLY appreciated.
