In November it became clear that homebrew was going to be a reality on the Switch, with a breakthrough declared for those most determined to use it. That process appears to be continually moving forward, with a Homebrew Launcher apparently coming 'soon'.
This was confirmed by hackers Plutoo, Derrek and Naehrwert, who appeared at the 34C3 hacking conference in Germany this week. They confirmed that they're working with the team behind the November announcement to finalise the Launcher, though no deadline was given beyond 'soon'.
The talk itself, regardless of feelings about the nature of such hacking, was interesting; after all, it delved into detail on what makes the Switch tick, and even the sorts of changes Nintendo implemented to make hacking tougher compared to the 3DS, for example. It transpired that the GPU - a stock NVIDIA Tegra X1 - was a bit of a weak point, as the chip is so well known and documented from other hardware that's readily available. The talk shows how many security gaps Nintendo has closed since the 3DS, albeit that hasn't stopped determined hackers.
The hackers themselves, in this case, are being very deliberate in what data and tools they're releasing; their stated intent is that the work will be used for homebrew, not outright piracy. Of course, the likelihood is that some will work on options to support piracy of Switch games.
Of course, much has changed since the days of rampant DS piracy. With this exploit systems need to be on version 3.0, whereas Nintendo is already well beyond that. Those that get a clean unit, keep it offline and then update from the Pokkén Tournament DX cartridge can install version 3.0, but that system will be restricted to that firmware for anyone wanting to utilise this homebrew exploit in its current form. As a result it's a very restrictive and niche option, likely to pass the vast majority of Switch owners by.
In any case, it seems a Homebrew Launcher is now close to being a reality on Switch, something that's always seemed inevitable since the system launched.

...Ok yeah I don't get this, we're not allowed to talk about homebrew/hacks for Switch, but articles show up about it anyways? Wat?
@Joeynator3000 Don't question it. The more you think about it the less sense it makes.
Don’t give them the promotion. I’ve never supported a hacker and never will.
There is good that comes from it and then there's bad.
Oh hey, maybe we get to play SNES games on the Switch after all.
You all knew this was going to happen, don’t deny it. Exploits are always found in these consoles. If you really can’t stand mods or exploits, then just ignore them. But I’m glad this is finally happening.
@Joeynator3000 these kind of articles are just the ones that generate ad revenue
@KnockKnock
And there is nothing illegal about it.
If they allow us to play our Wii U backups then that would be very helpful.
Great news. Can't wait to see what people can do with the Switch on their own
Well whatever, at least I know once Smash Switch happens I can keep the custom music.
If it does support piracy then shame on them! I will never support the use of pirating games. It is simply stealing! I don't care if people say "Nah I will use it as a backup because I already own the game". The reality is, people will misuse it. Developers deserve the sales they need. Well done for Nintendo for continuing to update the 3ds firmware to make it more secure, and I hope they do the same for the Switch.
Well some ppl love this news. Good for them.
@KnockKnock HAVE YOU BEEN TO SOCIAL MEDIA!? There's no such thing as ignoring them, once they appear!
Now that the switch will get homebrew, it's just a small matter of time before its completely jailbreaked, just like all hacked hardware.
Emulators ahoy, piracy will be rampant and Ninty can't do a thing about it
Playstation games on switch, hmm
BEST NEWS TODAY
@WhistleFish
Ninty brought this upon themselves by not giving any news of whether there will be VC on the Switch.
I'll do what I did with Wii U... wait until it's obsolete, and Ninty stops rolling out updates. If they manage to make it hack-proof by then, it wasn't meant to be.
@Captain_Gonru Wouldn't surprise me. They've done so with Twilight Princess (Wii).
@WhistleFish are you really saying yay to piracy? What if you made something you worked hard for and someone just took it for free?
@Don VC is coming next year with the online service, would you rather have a buggy emulator that does not work, if we had buggy VC people would be calling for homebrew, also we had VC very early in the Wii’s lifespan and the Wii still got homebrewed early
@ilovetotourz Why waste your time Whistle is way past logical responses at this point.
@Nintendoforlife Im kinda new here in the community (long time reader) so I dont know every troll lol,
"Hackers, huh. Bet they've got cool hacker names."
"Yeah... Plutoo, Naehrwert and, uh... Derrek."
@ilovetotourz Oh I wasn't saying they were a troll, I was just saying you aren't going to make any headway with people who take that position.
Absolute shame. And shame on you for promoting this idiocy.
If you love gaming or Nintendo, then you wouldn’t pirate games. It will only damage sales, and therefore damage support for the Switch.
yuk yuk yuk yuk
why the h*ll do you print shameful garbage like this ?
let the garbage hackers tell ppl about there garbage hacks.
BAD NINTENDOLIFE !!!!!!!
All the fools thinking homebrew is piracy...
Instead of constantly needing to update systems to secure against exploits, why don't Nintendo just employ these hackers to make said systems better?
@Monkey_Balls They could then another new batch of hackers will replace them and continue to do all the hacking they left behind so it's a never ending process.
@123akis Their making it so secure that their forgetting to remove that damn region lock from it.
@ilovetotourz Nintendo absolutely deserves every kick in the teeth that they can possibly get after they "forgot" to remove the region lock from the 3DS family.
@Timsworld it's been seven years bro, you need to get over it. That's an unhealthy obsession you got right there
@Timsworld They didn't forget, you crybabies clamored for it and now you have it. I swear, there is no pleasing the gaming community. Entitled sacks of waste, the majority of 'em.
@gortsi Isn't it a bit embarrassing that even after 7 years Nintendo still couldn't be bothered to remove that stupid region lock? Why did they even bother adding it onto the system in the first place? It ain't making them any money and it's an extremely anti consumer practice that rival companies like Sony and Microsoft have ditched for years now because they know how pointless and pathetic it is.
@onex Uhm I don't recall people asking for something as pointless as a region lock to get added to their systems. In fact I've seen more petitions AGAINST the damn thing then there are in support of it.
Why hacking is a cause for an article? This is very unprofessional on your behalf.
@retro_player_22 I know it's a never ending process as no system can ever be 100% secure, but I don't just mean exploits regarding security/piracy, etc (sorry, I should have clarified that in my original post). These modders/hackers seem to generally make a system better overall (regarding apps and what it can do, etc). A modded Wii is better than the base unit; a modded Wii U is better than the base unit, etc.
These guys aren't hiding away in basements - they are attending conferences to show off what they can do, and are obviously talented. Rather than be constantly behind and patching the exploits, surely it would be in Nintendo's best interest to have these guys on board and make better systems overall? If something has potential then why not use that potential...
Totally missed this update somehow. Great news indeed! I'm happy to see hacking on the Switch moving forward so fast.
Always a bit saddened to see the mindless naysayers here on NL. Everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion obviously, but 99% of the negative comments are about piracy, which this article isn't even about.
I salute the hackers that allowed me to freely use my legally lurchased NTSC 3DS games on my PAL system, and allowed me to use a microSD card on my Vita so I can stop deleting my legally purchased and downloaded games from my dreadful proprietary memory card.
@Timsworld well they have no region locking now, everyone is now in the future enjoying region free games while you are still in here complaining about it,
@Cosats
Feel free to ignore an article that doesn't allign with your interest. No one is forcing you to read the words contained within this article.
Show more detail guys so nintendo can patch it before it gets released
@ilovetotourz
The region lock was a stoopid decision. Region-locked 3DS units are still available in stores, and are still produced. The region-lock will never go away on official firmware. Sounds pretty relevant to me.
@Mikemario
Don't worry, there's a very specific way in which succesful exploits are exposed to the public by hackers. The exploit has been patched a long time ago btw, this only works on 3.0.
@TheGameSquid the 3ds is on its final years, Nintendo’s new current console supports Region Free, I honestly don’t expect hardware from 2011 to all of a sudden in its last phase to support region free
@TheGameSquid look I do not support region locking AT ALL, that does not excuse illegally downloading games, the other user came at me with Region locking even though I never said a word about it before
@ilovetotourz The emulator in question, Snes9x (which you can find on your own), is not buggy, not sure where you've been lol
@Mikemario
Uh oh, sycophant lol
@ThomasBW84 - Are you purposefully making your last NL article about hacking and Homebrew? That would be pretty funny, and something I might do, but I wasn't sure you had it in you.
I wondered when we'd get more info about VC.
I really don't see the point of this for the most part. I mean the Switch has some of the best indie gaming support ever seen on a game console. This seems like it's just there for ambitious young developers to test out some low budget games, but then again there is no shortage of tablets that already do that.
Another hypocritical double standard article. It beggars believe NintendoUK have a relationship with this site; who in turn are trying to keep their Switch/3DS exploit free for developers, and you post this smut as news?
@mikegamer I was talking about Nintendo’s own emulator to use for VC, also Nintendo has had some issues with emulation in the past, for example VC games for Wii U are really dark etc
@mikegamer mate i've used plenty of emu's and chipped playstations in the past . I've also bought multiple copies of certain Zelda and SMB editions over the last 30 years. Not happy with having to buy them again maybe later this year on the switch....
But
I think Nintendo has a right to it's intellectual property in a moral sense not just a legal one( unlike some other sh**ty film,television and music distributors ). They've given me and now my young family, so much pleasure over the years.
Don't give them promotion, in the first place. Piracy and cheating was rampant on the 3DS and it was truly annoying.
Anyway, with this exploit being locked to version 3.0 you don't have many Switches that will be able to use it, so I hope it doesn't become widespread.
Switch hackers can kiss my ass.
Eh, times have changed. Homebrew isn't what it used to be.
With constant updates having a modded system means you have to stay off-line, unless the homebrew scene has matured to the point you can update via custom firmware, and that takes years and usually you don't see it until the end of a console's lifecycle anyways. Switch is much less vulnerable than 3DS. I doubt we're going to be seeing exploits found with each passing firmware update. This 3.0 exploit very well may be all we get.
So.
Anyone who wishes to take advantage of this will be forced to not play any game from Mario Odyssey afterward, forced to stay offline, and basically just use the Switch for emulators. Which, btw, will also take years to be properly ported over with all the kinks ironed out. We're talking your basic SNES, GBA, maybe N64 but even that's not a given. And unless Nintendo does it themselves, I don't see GameCube or Wii running adequately on Switch, which would require an immaculate port of Dolphin. Not without someone with serious know-how putting a hell of a lot of work into it.
That all said, I have my second Switch on 3.0 for just such an occasion. My dream is, one day, at the end of this generation, to have a single Switch that is hacked so I can have all the current generation games as well as virtual console. But until that day comes (if it comes at all), I will just use a separate Switch for all the retro classics.
@subpopz they don’t promote doing any of this. They simply report on it. People would female dog if they didn’t too. Nintendolife is one of the cleanest most politically correct sites around. Don’t stretch the truth.
I've been against piracy my whole life, but I'm changing that stance these days. Any console shutting down their store, so I can no longer retrieve my games, will become a piracy machine for me.
Steam lets me own and retrieve 15-20 year old games. Why don't Nintendo keep the DSi store open on a server farm that can scale between their different infrastructures?
I'm still waiting for a new Vita hack. There's still no modern way of legally playing Crisis Core. A modded Vita would solve that.
Unless the game is in no way obtainble then I say Pirate away, some japanese games never make it to the west if they wanna miss out on potential customers or new ones its their loss.
Let's not talk about the devil. No one should know that the devil exists, we should just pretend that this is a kind and honest society, nothing bad ever happened. Let's be like the animals in the farm, keep growing fat from what the farmer feeds us. The farmer loves fat animals like us. 🐷
I'm not going to complain, it's pointless.
I do wish to ask for an honest answer from the staff, why exactly do you cover stuff like this? I know it is news, but nothing good ever comes from covering piracy or piracy related stuff like homebrew. Physically sold stuff that's not licensed (or is) on dead hardware is one thing, but covering the active seems to invite problems.
Im sure they will find another way to hack in they just can't help themselves.
I don't mind articles about this stuff. I find it fascinating to learn the inner workings of systems like the Switch. The hardware analysis for the Wii U for example was a very interesting read.
@Coffee_Drinker "It wasn't released in the West" isn't a valid excuse for using a pirated copy anymore. Because the Switch is region free you can just order a physical copy on Amazon Japan, use one of the dozens of import shops or create a Japanese eShop account.
@jomo32 Wrong
Boring... I like my Nintendo gaming console locked down, safe and secure with quality softwarem
If people want to write software for switch.... Why don't they just write software for switch..
I installed the homebrew launcher on my Wii. Number of games I used it to pirate? Zero. What I DID use it for: a number of useful, legit and interesting things, such as being able to make full backups of ALL of my savegames (vs. just the limited subset that Nintendo wanted to allow us to back up to SD).
Those of you SJWs who yell "homebrew equals PIRACY and is EVIL" are utterly clueless and totally missing the boat. If you don't understand what homebrew really is, please STFU. Seriously.
Everyone here attacking NintendoLife. They are just reporting fact. You all attack the reporting of fact but praise the garbage biased opinionated reviews here.
That’s called hypocrisy.
Note well, not all the reviews here are garbage biased opinionated reviews. Only a small number are.
@Timsworld while I agree with you, I don't think this will ever change. I don't know why they did it either, considering that their handhelds were always region free before the 3DS
@sremik
Hacking a Switch is not good for gamers at this point. Sure, maybe (maybe not) your the one guy in a MILLION who installs homebrew for just because you can? The reality is the Switch is the hotspot where a developer can make some money and help push Nintendo back to the top and allow some Independence to actual actually make it in the marketplace. Even the people that want to put ROMs on a switch are sidestepping Nintendo eShop and the upcoming virtual console and it is BOOTLEGGING. Think about it.
Okay, for the dozen or so Switches that haven't been updated in months and can never update again, I guess a couple of those might be able to use this. For the rest of us whose consoles are more or less up to date, it won't really affect us one way or the other.
@Monkey_Balls These modders/hackers seem to generally make a system better overall (regarding apps and what it can do, etc). A modded Wii is better than the base unit; a modded Wii U is better than the base unit, etc.
When you mean better, what side of the pond are you at? There at two sides to that pond. You are either the consumer or the creator? There's no in-between. If you meant better on the consumer side then you're clearly not helping the creator, if you're on the creator side then you're clearly not with the hacker. If a modded Wii and Wii U is better for the consumer then those consoles won't last as their inferior exploit will harm sales from the creators. Look what happen to Ouya and Dreamcast, Ouya is open source, easy to hack and even the creator want people to hack it cause that same creator was like all the rest.
Guess what happen to her and her company, it went under, people found ways to play games for free without ever paying Ouya any money and the only thing Ouya got was money from the console sale and even those weren't impressive. When nobody buy games that means no money were going to the developers, those devs don't want to create games for Ouya anymore thus no games for Ouya and when there's no games on Ouya there will be no consumer either. In the end it's a dead system, it's an open system but what good does it make when at the end of the day it's going to be just another emulation box.
Dreamcast is different from Ouya but like Ouya, Dreamcast failed on one thing. It's mod friendly and though that's great for consumer. The more exploit people took, the more money Sega and dev loss. Sega were already bleeding money after the Saturn and yet Sega made Dreamcast the system that consumers or hackers would say, yes free stuff is possible. I know people will bring excuse about doing homebrew and stuff with it but at the end of the day the main exploit for most people are the free games and those are what killed a product. Had Nintendo made a Wii and Wii U mod friendly, then Nintendo wouldn't be here in the gaming market today. Say what you like about Nintendo's anti-consumer policy but like I always said, there's a reason why Nintendo exist in the business world this long and not bowing down to consumer's nay-saying is one of them. They're not in the business to lose money, they are in the business to earn them.
And the piracy begins 😓
@ilovetotourz
Your talking to the wrong guy
I already own a device that plays all emulators, i don't need a hacked switch.
I have no problem with piracy, my government are all a bunch of pirate's, what's good for them is good for me
I use very old ROMS, not latest games, one would think we live in a righteous world, hmm far from it
@JaxonH
Can't see any reason why switch couldn't run the dolphin emu, the nvida shield had no problems with it, so the switch shouldn't either.
My jxd can't run dolphin but it's old now, probably buy the far superior version next.
Some N64 games run OK others don't but that's more to do with a unfinished emu, there are many unfinished emulators but some of them are still getting updates, many improve over the original Base machine.
Thx to my 2nd vita having Henkaku and homebrew, there are fan made zelda games like Navi's Quest and pokemon games, original doom and quake, my next hacked device will be the GPD XD, it looks just like a 3ds clamshell , only far more powerful
@WhistleFish
Nah, dolphin does not run that great on Shield. You might be able to get a few games running fine but it's going to take a lot of tinkering with Settings and a lot of games don't run good... dolphin on android is coming along but, especially for a device of that power it needs to be very good.
I know about GPD. I plan on getting the new GPD Win 2 in April. It's $700, so more than twice the price of Switch, but it's about as powerful as one so, it can run basically any seventh gen game. But because it's windows dolphin runs. It barely makes it, but it's just powerful enough to run good.
@JaxonH
Yep, that's what I mean, I know it's not perfect for shield but most emulators have glitches, it should be adequate for switch but obviously not perfect.
I have the old JXD S7800B, it's old nowadays compared to JXD SINGULARITY or GPD XD, which have better chip sets but it's fine for retro gaming
The GPD WIN is a great device, tbh i thought it was already released, it's not for me, can't get along with computer but the next gen of JXD and GPD handheld gaming devices should be more special, the next set of chips are equivalents of something from the switch upwards to ps4, depending on which ones they use. My jxd is mid tier the next chips are top tier but more expensive, probably a new device in 2019 or 2020
Actually GPD were thinking about doing a phone with a screen that rotates for gaming with integrated analogue and buttons, I would be interested in that
Like you, I will probably go get another switch and not open it, actually sod it I am getting another today
@Nincompoop What are you on about? It's a matter of keeping reports out of the public eye so as not to promote unauthorized conduct, not this fable fairytale nonsense you seem to correlate for no good reason.
3DS-style "stability update" to "improve user experience" incoming in 3, 2, 1... 😌
@Snakesglowcaps Really? They make reference to it no doubt being used for hacking. Re-read the article.
Prepare yourselves, firmware updates are going to become more frequent. Switch will surpass 3DS's stability quickly. XD
Seriously, though, who would even want a homebrew Switch so early on? Legal and ethical matters aside (everything to be said there is common knowledge and still doesn't deter everyone), it means no firmware updates, no eShop, no DLC... all for the ability to play older roms via RetroArch or something? Are people supposedly THAT desperate about virtual console? :V
More annoying that all these exploits frequently use holes in games themselves, which then leads to Nintendo removing said games from eShop until a proper patch. In terms of piracy thwarting game sales, it's getting plain freaky.
Don’t even know what the nibelsnarf homebrew is?! Sounds like the best cup of tea
Oh good it's just """"""""""""Homebrew"""""""""""" so its ok. Also Nintendo are jerks because <insert feature> is not on Switch yet so piracy is justified.
Hackers can pique their curiosity but I think it's shameless that they publicly share ways to compromise the security of these systems.
@tanookisuit pirates paid them to do so
@sremick Sorry but I'd much rather there be no piracy than the ability to make some extra backups.
Whatever benefit Homebrew offers is not worth the struggle niche game developers will have as their target audience bypass paying for their games.
@Dr_Lugae Homebrew and piracy have nearly nothing to do with each other. They are done by different people, leverage different exploits, and so forth. Please stop spreading nonsense if you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
@onex You bought a Switch, why should anyone but you be able to decide what you could and couldn't do with it? If you go buy a car and want to change the radio to a better one, or if you want to add a TV screen in the backseat to keep your passengers occupied, should the car company be the one to tell you whether you are or are not allowed to make any of those modifications?
@retro_player_22 Please go and read the history of the Dreamcast and the history of the Ouya, and stop trying to pigeonhole complex stories into a very narrow and, in fact, wholly incorrect worldview. Neither of those consoles (if you can even call the Ouya a console, when it's essentially a cheap Android phone with a controller) failed because they were easy to hack. 'Open source' also does not mean 'easily hackable'.
@the8thark If only that was true, sadly when you report stuff like this as news, you are promoting piracy. I have seen other news here with citations to ROM translation and video how to guides on hacking snes mini classics.
As for the reviews here, I don't trust them due to past of reviewing VC games using PC ROMS and 5 min reviews of WiiWare games.
@Coffee_Drinker The Switch is region-free so that argument doesn't work anymore.
I hate so much this situation. I don't want to hack my Switch, but unless a real photo viewer will be legitimately available I am very tempted by homebrews. I want the new Photo channel. I don't want to hack my Switch but if Nintendo don't give me what I want I can't help but think that homebrews could do it. It is so frustrating. Sometimes I hate Nintendo so much
@c2017nlifemedia They're done through the same exploits homebrew is directly associated with piracy because both involve compromising the the security of the hardware. e.g. the 3DS Cubic Ninja's exploit done for homebrew lead directly to piracy. The guy who found the exploit said: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-11-21-student-homebrew-nintendo-3ds
"If you release an exploit that's too powerful you might let people do whatever they want with their console - which can be great - but you also have the possibility of piracy... which isn't so great."
Homebrew is like if someone figured out how to open the lock of the backdoor of your house but never went in. Then told other people who to open it, pirates are the people who use the Homebrew's method to start taking stuff. Homebrewing hackers and piracy hackers are both looking for the same thing, ways around the system's security.
@Monkey_Balls That's Derrek with two R's...cool, huh?
When I bought my New 3DS XL, I thought "Hey, I could use my old 3DS as a homebrew device, and maybe get a new version of JNKPlat working!"
I was disappointed to find that, since I'd left the old 3DS to do updates, it was practically impossible for me to do so.
And therein lies the problem with Hacked Homebrew.
For someone like myself, doing things "properly" is a lot of time and effort that I really don't have, unless I give up my usual AGameAWeek schedule.
Bah, humbug.
@Dr_Lugae Your comparison fails because 'piracy' is a propaganda misnomer by the copyright industry (aka the industry that, doing nothing, makes a lot of money off the people who actually create) to indicate what is actually the creation of a copy. Moreover, time and again studies have shown no real impact on sales: someone who downloads a copy of a game (or music, movies, books, ...) without paying for it, wouldn't have paid for it anyway if gratis copies were not available.
@Jayenkai That's a name I haven't seen since the glory days of DS homebrew! If you still have an old AK2i or DSTT lying around, the process to making your 3DS homebrewable is fairly straightforward, and can be done on every 3DS firmware.
@c2017nlifemedia I’m afraid my only real DS "homebrew" carts were the Datel "Kinda legit" carts. Limited by my own sense of legal requirements
I did buy an R4, but it got given away to my cousin, and I kept playing with the homebrew cart instead!
you're unlikely able to play switch games or custom firmwares
@WhistleFish
Ya GPD Win has been out for a year or two. Were like $330. My brother has one. But the new one I'm getting releases in April. And it's probably more powerful than Switch, but because it's PC, The end result looks about on par with what you get on Switch, sometimes better and sometimes worse. DOOM gets about 45fps at 507p, so a little better than switch but it's also taking advantage of Vulkan, which consoles don't really get performance boost from. It can run stuff like GTA5 but, it doesn't have enough RAM (only has 8gb which isn't enough for PC, tbh) and it start stuttering once RAM fills up if you drive fast in the open world.
But yeah check it out. There's a form thread I made about it here with some info actually
yes, finally!
@c2017nlifemedia The car comparison is asinine at best. Yes, you are breaking your warranty when you modify your vehicle, unless specifically stated otherwise. The company doesn't mind because, 1 - you are still paying them for the car from whichever loan service used, and 2 - you just broke the warranty, so that's one less vehicle they need to worry about financially.
In the Switch's case, Homebrew, which is a direct avenue to PIRACY - Yes, it's PIRACY no matter how you feel justifying it, which is always detrimental to the creators - encourages people not to purchase software. This has a domino effect on 3rd party support, especially if sales are lost on digital wares. It will discourage companies from supporting the system. And we all know how that's bad news in the vidja games industry.
If you and a gaggle of "do-gooders" want to tinker with a licensed product you purchased, you are free to do so, sure. But do it in a forum somewhere specifically for that, lessening the potential damage done from those with ill intent who wouldn't have considered their devious methods had it not been presented to them without some digging.
@subpopz Oh the irony
Users mentioning homebrew = bad
Reporters and other people who make articles = somehow A-OK
Sounds awfully hypocritical to me, hmmmmmm
Who is going to do this? It will render the bulk of current and all future games unplayable. No online, etc.
If Nintendo care enough, they will update the firmware that all units ship with to beyond version 3.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure my new Switch unit shipped at version 1.0...
I don’t care in the least. Why would I want to void my warranty or potentially brick the console. It’s just stupid and the first step to piracy on the Switch.
A shame. I hope Nintendo does everything in their hand to stop it.
Typical. But of course, it was to be expected, so no surprises there.
I do have to wonder how the Xbox One and PS4 are doing in this regard, though. Back in the Xbox360/PS3 days, there were mod chips as well as relatively complicated soft mods, but overall it somehow seems to me that homebrew and hacking seems to be more prevalent/simple on Nintendo platforms.
Then again, besides the PS Vita, none of the others have so many platforms to hack, so that might also be a factor in the equation.
@gortsi And who do we have to thank for that? That's right it's good old Iwata who thought that these kinds of tricks were acceptable in this day and age. Can't say that I'm glad that he's dead but with the mindset that he had in regards to this matter he sure wasn't doing the gamers that he claimed to be any favors.
@ilovetotourz The 3DS is still region locked fool.
I think this is good news, hopefully, this gets Nintendo to get off their buts and make a great Virtual Console, to try and prevent people moving to a hacked system with working emulators as the switch would be the perfect retro machine on the go.
@onex Who said anything about warranty, and what is all this about loan services? What are you talking about? Also, can you give me one example of a neutral study (i.e. not paid for by the copyright industry, the big guys who take away the creators' money) which undisputably provides proof of a negative impact of file sharing on sales, or of any of the other far-reaching claims you make? Stop the propaganda.
I love how everyone is upset about this, all I'm worried about is playing the wii/GameCube games I bought with my money on the switch that by the way, I bought, with my money, and not have to pay a second time for the same game, also I want to be able to use themes but again, Nintendo is going to make you pay for more stuff you shouldn't have to pay for, so yeah I think that justify nodding, nobody's developing an ntr boot for the switch yet (mod menus) or a freeshop/tikshop, heck not even custom firmware, so calm down will you guys? Piracys going to take place weather they hack the switch or not (research flash cartridges and you'll understand what I mean) so you might as well not worry about it, I'll have homebrew on my switch asap but I'll still be paying for new content (I still refuse to pay more for games I already physically own though)
@ilovetotourz Nintendo emulators aren't that great, with the exception of the Snes Classic; games actually have the right colors, crisp visuals, and more accurate emulation altogether. NERD was responsible for coding it, on the Wii U, who knows what team did it, but it's not a very good one. Unofficial emulators, however, have superior accuracy and compatibility.
@Timsworld Any source that it was just Iwata who made that decision? Or are we just pulling things out of our asses now? Because Iwata was also president during the DS years and that wasn't region locked.
@gortsi He did state that he was in support of it as evidenced by this article about it: http://m.au.ign.com/articles/2013/07/03/nintendos-president-discusses-region-locking
I think 99.9% of you are getting excited one way or the other for nothing. In fact I think the only person here who is going to get anything out of this is @JaxonH due to his uncanny foresight
@Timsworld fair. But I still don't believe it's a decision taken by a single person, no matter how dumb it might be. Anyway the 3DS won't change, but at least the Switch is region free for anyone that cares, I certainly don't.
Retroarch on the Switch and playing old retro games from the NES to the PS1 would be a dream come true... it’s almost tempting to buy a second Switch just for hacking, but, I’m not hacking my Switch anytime soon, I’ll wait for the end of the generation. When I buy the Switch 2, I’ll hack it for sure.
@gortsi I fear that that will be the unfortunate truth.
I get trying to give awareness but i do believe this promotes excites certain people to a degree and makes it more tempting to participate in further / future shenanigans.
It is finally here!

@olrodlegacy Hackers are amazing, just don't use it for pirating
@loyalroyal1989 Yea, but I'm not buyin FF7, and all the other games I bought again, so...hooray for hackers!
@maruse Why???
