Understandable. Most MK users just spam one attack and overpower most of the weaker opponents. Even more skilled players can have a problem with a mediocre MK user, since MK is pretty OP.

It says right in the article that they mean in Tournaments. (Tournaments? For SSB? Now that's a laugh)
I think you would be surprised how popular SSB tournaments are. I've been to a few conventions where they were big deals and I even heard of one school having a Smash Bros. club. Of course, I think having serious SSB tournaments seems a bit ridiculous, but it's not a rarity.

You'd be surprised at how much depth there is in those games. It's not at Street Fighter's level, but there are a lot of advanced mechanics and techniques.
Anyway, I'm not surprised that MetaKnight has been banned. I'm only surprised that it took this long for him to get banned. Pokémon tournaments ban significantly overpowered monsters like Arceus. Yu-gi-oh! card tournaments ban significantly overpowered cards like Monster Reborn. It only follows that the SSB community would ban its significantly overpowered character in their tournaments.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

I have won multiple Smash Bros Tournaments (in both Melee and Brawl, mostly against friends and around 3 tournaments at stores) by picking random characters in both. However, I never use the random button in Brawl because Meta Knight is the only character I cannot use. In fact, I always thought Meta Knight was a garbage character because he was always so easy to kill and smash into the ground when I played against anyone using him.

True, the SSB games have depth, but most of that is botched when you realize that there are too many random variables in matches to make the game "Fair". In most stages there are hazards that can kill the player, the random item spawning can completely tip the match in one person's favor, and a small handful of characters just have extremely spam-able moves (counter-able, yes, but only to really advanced players). Of course, I still like the games because they're games where memorizing button combinations and remembering which button does the high kick doesn't matter at all, but taking SSB games seriously is acting like Super Mario Galaxy is Super Meat Boy.
EDIT: Yes, you can remove specific stages from random selection and turn off items entirely, but the spamming of specific characters is still possible.
