Topic: Considering Homebrew to play missing games

Objection

I hope this isn't a taboo subject or anything. I'm considering trying Hombrew for Wii in the near future for the purposes of surpassing the region-coding so I can play games like Disaster: Day of Crisis, Fatal Frame 4 and Captain Rainbow. The latter is rumored to be more likely to be released in Europe than in the US. I would still buy the European versions legit and I won't go through with this if there's a sign that Nintendo will see the light and release these. Thoughts? Advice? I'll consider them.

I would open the region-coding on my Wii if it wasn´t for the system updates. I´m a bit worried that they might "fix" the changes I´d done. I´m disheartened that awesome games like Tatsunuko vs Capcom won´t make it here, but I don´t think I´ll do anything about it.

I can´t see anything morally wrong with buying foreign releases though. I do it all the time with older consoles.

did you upgrade your Wii to System Menu 4.0 yet? if you have, homebrew may not be an option for you at the moment, as 4.0 rendered the Twilight Hack unusable.

If you haven't upgraded yet, you should be good to go, just be careful if they end up packaging system updates in with those games. updating your system with an update from the wrong region (a PAL update for a NTSC/US Wii, for example) will semi-brick your wii.

I am already on 4.0...I know that I'll have to wait until the next Homebrew fix. Anyone have experience using it? I'm only interest in the region-free-ing aspect.

I'm not the moral police, so I'd have to say go for it (when there is not other alternative). Maybe nintendo might wise up and realize there is actually a market for these games.

I use the same username on TVTropes and youtube. look me up!

Nintendo's just a bastard for import control. I don't think either the 360 or PS3 use region locking, and all Nintendo are trying to do is stop NOE stealing NOA's profit, and vice versa. Use homebrew and hope they fix their mistakes. Remember: The customer is always right.

So far I'm pretty neutral on the Homebrew thing. I installed the Homebrew Channel for the same reason: I wanted to play Shanghai and Mahjong on my Wii and there were Japanese releases. I bought Twilight Princess solely to run the hack; it looks like the end of the road for that one. I always throw every update on without concern because I can live without being able to run the couple of old N.A. Gamecube games I run through it.

GeckoOS is a nice safe way to run other region games. I'd definitely install the HBC; assuming you get it from someplace "legit" like wiibrew.org it's safe and can be removed like any other channel and makes no changes to your firmware. GeckoOS will run Wii games well and some Gamecube imports.

Ultimately I just bought a Japanese Wii because there were enough titles for me to justify it. I was able to get one that was unmodded cheap off of Ebay and GeckoOS could run Mr. Driller Drill Land, but not allow for the memory card formatting to let me save games (the truth comes out!). I can respect that having additional Wii's won't be for everyone (especially if you're wanting to run PAL software -- don't forget to use component leads and I hope your TV supports 576i/p -- otherwise stick with Japanese releases which are also NTSC), but it's just getting harder and harder to work around the region coding nonsense anymore.

The homebrew channel is pretty essential if you want play games like earthbound. Without it, I'm sure my wii would have a good layer of dust on top of it. Ever since I installed the HBC, I now turn on my wii every day to play something, before it was like once a week.

If you updated to 4.0, you're going to have to wait a while til the next exploit is found. It was a lot more important before the update because it allowed for SDHC cards, but now Nintendo has finally added that into the firmware.

I use homebrew ONLY so I can play Tatsunoko VS Capcom. It sucks, beacuse I really want to update, but that'd mean no more Tatsunoko for me T_T I'll enjoy it while it lasts. TvC is a fantastic game that'll never come to America.

I've thought about it... But I like having my warranty. I live 20 minutes from NoA Headquarters in Redmond, WA. I can drop it off and pick it up 3 days later.

Anyone know what GCN games don't work with the Wii now?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the gamecube is 100% compatible.

I'm thinking about going through with this sometime this fall. Anyone had major problems with HBC?

Like sean said go through a legitimate site like wiibrew.org and look for the hackmii installer. If thats the case its extremely unlikely anything could go wrong. It runs fine and still runs fine after going from 4.0 to 4.1 system update. Some exploits (twilight hack) might get patched with system updates but if you already have HBC on there its generally not gonna mess with it.
Also wiibrew.org does not condone piracy in any way and is really only concerned with legitimate uses of homebrew.

Just stick with homebrew channel and programs you can run off it. Theres a lot of stuff that lets you mess with IOS files and all kinds of other stuff. Stay away from those. Homebrew channel is safe cause its basically a channel like any other and doesn't mess with the wii enough to have any possible problems. Ive heard of some people bricking there wii but it definitely wasn't from just installing HBC.

The only concern is that if your wii dies and is under warranty if they find you had homebrew channel on it they may consider your warranty void.

Yep and they'll charge you extra to fix it. I've got no issues with HBC; the only things I've run to date are GeckoOS (I've run Japanese Wii/Gamecube games and North American Gamecube games with generally good results) and SDLMAME (rough, but works for older arcade games).

I would caution you against attempting to launch any online component in a game not from your region without further research; I think there's issues with that sort of thing and you'll also need to be careful about running imports that prompt for a system update -- that can definitely brick your machine. Before importing anything see if you can determine if there's updates on the disc and workarounds for it. Nintendo titles will probably be the main source of this (I don't know if Disaster Day of Crisis has any or not).

For peace of mind, I really do recommend buying an import machine if possible; the only import games I'm willing to run are North American Gamecube games -- the whole firmware update/online component makes it all too messy for me to want to deal with.

I might not have to do this now, if that fan translation project of Fatal Frame works out. Well, I'd still need Disaster to come out in NA. Come on, Reggie, pleeeease?
