Topic: Wii U's full potential

Hi!

I am wondering why game developers doesn't use Wii U's full potential to control games in Wii U versions, some devs are using them but some aren't. I hate to buy FPS-game where you can't use Wiimote Plus to aim weapon or car game where you can't use Wii Wheel to steer car, are Wii U games going backwards in development or what? Graphics is better for sure but gameplay isn't. I think Wii U's full potential is wasted in many releases, like Mass Effect 3 or Hot Wheels Worlds Best Driver, where you are forced to use thumbsticks to control brand new games, it is like going back decades in game development. Thumbsticks are inaccurate and not fun to use in games where you need precision in aiming or driving. I don't like wagling games, but some motion control in games adds lot of immersion to games, this is also negleted issue in most new titles. Wiimote is next best thing which was invented after PC mouse or PC driving wheel, it is quite accurate and fun way to control games. Using Wii U's gamepad as conventional way to control game should be optional and not forced option to control Wii U games.

Because developers are lazy. That's why.

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

I disagree that it's developer laziness. I think there is a vicious cycle that plagues Nintendo and 3rd parties:

1. Nintendo show developers how to make interesting games using their new hardware.
2. Developers (not all) make good and interesting uses of their new kit.
3. Nintendo fans don't buy these games because they don't review as well as Nintendo's own.
4. Nintendo strike gold with a couple of games.
5. Publishers commission loads of "Nintendofied" games which look like they're aimed at 1 year olds.
6. Publishers don't sell these games. Stop supporting Nintendo.
7. Gaming writes off Nintendo and almost completely ignores its games 'til it's next console.
8. Nintendo show developers how to make interesting games using their new hardware.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

Maybe it is vicious cycle, but it needs to be stopped, otherwise gaming is going back to stone ages. I bought Wii because of new way to control games, now Wii U is going backwards to thumbstick controls, this can't be happening. I though Wii was somekind of break through to game controls, now Wii U discontinued to use motion controls and is coming back to basic dull controlling method. I would like to use GamePad completely without thumbsticks, moving with screen only in my hands, It would be lot of fun and also more accurate way to aim. Controlling movement keys with moving GamePad accordingly half step right, left or when running taking two steps forward, when walking only one step forward, you could control leaning also by leaning controller or move controller up or more down to be able to go standing or crouching, it would be more fun way to play FPS-game. Why developers and also gamers don't see full potential for new hardware, why they always wan't to use same methods to control games? I have read that GamePad was meant to be aiming screen for Wii Zapper, great use for FPS-games, now it is used for aiming only in few games. Controlling FPS or car games with thumbstick is real pain, it has always been and never going to change and I don't like autoaiming it is like cheating. You are absolutely right, Nintendo should release some games like Metroid Prime Wii U and Mario Kart 8 which are showing how new hardware should be used correctly, but now these releases are too late, that is why nobody aren't going to buy anything. Who wants to play FPS game with thumbsticks anyway, when you know aiming could be done much more fun way and gaming is basically having fun, atleast for me it is, I don't know about others.

^ Thumbsticks are a "basic dull controlling method"?? You are in the VAST majority if you think its better to play a game with a controller that requires you to move your wrists and hands around instead of using an analog stick.

If it ain't broke, why fix it? Nintendo/Sony/Xbox tried to shake things up with motion controls and nobody cared, so they went back to the tried and true.

I've never heard anyone complain that analog sticks are bad for racing games. They have always offered fantasic control in all the racing games I've ever played. In fact I would say they are more precise than motion control seeing as you have more dexterity and subtle, nuanced movement in your thumbs than in your wrists. Though I would agree that IR pointing is more precise for shooting games.

@Nintenjoe64
I think your point three is the meat of it all. People moan at third-party developers but seem to forget the economics of game development.
If I owned a software studio I would not develop games for the wii u at this time, if ever.

What's the point of taking a chance, working hard and spending money to produce a wii u game with all the bells when you have so much going against you, namely a tiny user base that is reputed to alienate third-party games.

Ultimately the truth is that the major third-party developers (or rather the vast majority of developers) don't need Nintendo. They did well enough without the wii and will most likely do just as well without the wii u.This is not a bad place to be if only Nintendo had made the most of it. With all the billion$ made last gen they should have invested some in growing and expanding their studios to create more games because the reality is the games are not going to come from anywhere else.

Analog thumbsticks are real pain when playing car games, there is accuracy but it is really annoying to try to streer car with your thumbs accurately, it gets frustrating very fast. Have you ever played Mario Kart or Need For Speed with Wii Wheel, it is much more fun and even more accurate way to play car games than thumbsticks. Also FPS-games are annoying to play with thumbsticks, very inaccurate and you certainly need aiming assist to be able to hit anything. I am really sad that motion controls is wasted opportunity for many players, I don't like using thumbsticks for other than platform jumper games where they are originally designed. Playstation and Xbox are all the same, trying to be fun but when you have to control all games with two thumb joysticks, there just isn't any fun for me, I want new better ways to be able to control games, otherwise I could just go back to playing PC games. Wii was pioneer and I hoped Wii U will continue as successor, but now I see many gamers and developers are going back to old controlling method, it seems everybody still like to play games with their thumbs, I don't understand why this awkward controlling method is so popular. Mouse is much more better controller for FPS-games and PC wheel is much more accurate way to control car games, playing those games with thumbs isn't fun. If Wii U games refuses to continue motion control support, I have to go back to playing PC games. I preferably buy PC version, if other option is to play game with thumbsticks only. I just want to be able to enjoy games on my couch, thumbsticks isn't right controller for every single game, please make more controlling options for Wii U gamers.

I have played Mario Kart with the Wii wheel and I didn't think it was more fun or more accurate (it was perfectly fine though). I mean, at no point when I was playing MK7 on 3DS did I think I can't control this without a wheel. The controls were fantastic as they always are whether it be D-pad, analog stick or wheel. Mmnn, being a gamer and hating to control games with your thumbs is certainly quite a quandary you've got there (kind of negates 30+ years of video game history!) Maybe you should just stick to the PC versions for those particular genres. FPS isn't my favorite genre, so I can't be entirely sure, but I believe some of the ones that have been released on Wii U have support for Wii remote.

Call me old fashioned but I prefer the traditional controller. I would use the classic controller pro over the Wiimote on games that supported it. But the Wiimote I thought was fun for somethings. I did like the Zelda games with it althought Skyward Sword controls were much better than Twilight Princess, IMO.

I'm honestly not that impressed with games that use the Wii remote with the Wii Wheel to steer. This mainly has to do with the fact that motion plus hasn't been utilized in said games. Mario Kart Wii isn't accurate AT ALL with the Wii Wheel.

That's why Mario Kart 8 will probably be the best motion controlled racing game for a good while. I can't speak for Need For Spped: Most Wanted(I haven't played it), but I'm assuming that uses the motion + technology in the GamePad. Sonic and All Stars probably would have had me using the Wii Wheel to play, but since they didn't use motion + in the Wii remote, I just stick to standard controller schemes for that one.

It's motion + or bust for me at this point.

A lot of the time the Wii U version is more of an afterthought than integrated into normal development, and quick dirty ports are brought forth with appended Gamepad mechanics.

Main reason for my complainment is that I just bought couple of games for Wii U where controls need to be improved, Hot Wheel Worlds Best Driver and Resident Evil Revelations. In Hot Wheel you can only use thumbsticks to control car and it has so huge deadzone which makes very hard to control car accurately and winning is nearly impossible, very frustrating game and I wasted my money for game which isn't fun to play. Other game is Resident Evil Revelation where aiming accurately with thumbsticks is very hard, especially when there is multiple enemies attacking, I would like to have option to blast monsters with Wii Zapper or atleast be able to aim with Wii U's GamePad. GamePad is designed to be aiming device so why developers don't use it, option to aim with gamepad would be more fun and more accurate way to control FPS-games, I think Wii U is going to be another wasted opportunity in game development, too bad. Is there any game where Wii U's GamePad is actually used as aiming device, I would like to try that game, perhaps next Metroid game?

EDIT:
Here is link where Wii U's Game Pad controller was originally designed as screen accessory to Wii U Zapper
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/wii_u_zapper_would_d...

Nothing prevents developers using GamePad as aiming device for FPS-games, even without Wii U Zapper
