What I can say is that, what I do like about Cloud getting in...is that the stage looks awesome. lol

Yeah, just like when they had Super Smash Bros X Street Fighter, this trailer specifically said "Super Smash Bros X Final Fantasy VII". He's representing his game, not the entire Final Fantasy series.

Still, it would be nice to see some more general FF representation. (After all, you have enough costume "slots" for classic cloud, AC cloud and all the protagonists from the first six fantasies [which were made for Nintendo consoles]).

I do believe they'll go the predictable route and just offer recolors based on characters from FFVII though.

Alright, I'll pack up my things and go.

So, the Smash presentation in December. I think it's possible that Sakurai will announce multiple characters he chose from the ballot. Who do you think he'll choose? Personally, while I like surprise characters, I hope he actually adds a character in that a lot of people want (i.e. very highly requested characters). Let's take a break from speculating on potential third-party newcomers, cut veterans, and just focus on potential Nintendo newcomers.

Inklings - I think they are very likely to be in Smash... but not necessarily through the ballot. I think that would be very weird if that's how they got in. They seem like a character they would add in to promote Splatoon, rather than "the people's choice!" But I do think they are very likely to get in.

King K. Rool - The king has a rather special thing going for him. Unlike a lot of other characters, he's popular in major regions around the globe (notably America, Japan, and Europe). This is big for him, as he has worldwide appeal. He's also from the Donkey Kong series, one of Nintendo's flagship series. Not only that, his fanbase is some of the most dedicated out there. They managed to get a pic featuring K. Rool as one of the winners (3rd place, I believe) in the last official Super Smash Bros. Photo Challenge on Miiverse. They've made a Twitter campaign, made fan-art promoting him, made countless mock-ups, and the support thread on Smashboards for K. Rool has over a million views. I'm sure some of this stuff has caught the attention of Sakurai at some point, especially the out cry over his Mii costume. With all of this data, I think he's a very likely candidate for Smash.

Isaac - I'm not too familiar with Isaac, but I do know that he's a very highly requested character. Sakurai has a fetish for pretty anime boys (why did I type that), so Isaac would be very appealing to him, I think. But Isaac has some things going against him. For one, his fanbase isn't very vocal, at least not on the same level as K. Rool's. Isaac also comes from a pretty small game series, Golden Sun. The series has only manages to muster up just a couple million copies sold. Despite this, he's still a popular character that people want to see in. So I think he has an okay shot.

Bandanna Dee - This is where I start to scrape at the bottom of the barrel for highly requested Nintendo characters. Bandanna Dee's popularity is an odd one. Most of his support comes from Smashboards... and that's pretty much it. He definitely has supporters on other sites, but Smashboards is the only vocal part of the fanbase. Despite this, I think it could be possible for him to get in Smash. He's from a huge Nintendo franchise (Kirby), and Sakurai has a tiny bit of bias to the Kirby series, so Bandanna Dee would probably catch his eye. A spear-wielder would also be interesting to see in Smash. I don't think his chances are that big, but not impossible either.

Paper Mario - Okay, I'm going to stop here, because this is pretty much where highly requested Nintendo characters end. Paper Mario would definitely be a unique choice for the game. A lot of people want him in, and he's from the Mario series. But that's kind of a problem (in my eyes)... he's from the Mario series. We have 7 Mario characters already (9 if you want to count Yoshi and Wario), so adding another Mario character would be overkill in a lot of people's eyes. Not only that, he would be another Mario (we already have Mario and Doc). Not to say he wouldn't be a clone (oh trust me, he wouldn't), but... he's still Mario. Whether or not these arguments hold any meaning is unknown, but I really don't think he's that likely. Sakurai and co. have limited resources, and I'm not sure if they would want to use them on him of all characters. But hey... anything is possible.

And that's (sadly) the only very highly requested Nintendo characters. When I mean "highly requested", I mean "VERY" highly requested. So that's why I didn't bring up Waluigi, Dixie Kong, and Krystal for example. They have their fans, but I don't think they're as popular as the characters I listed. Personally, I think the top 3 characters I listed are the most likely to get in. In fact, it would be great if all 3 of them would become playable. That may not happen, but having at least one of them in the game would make a lot of people happy.

Now Cloud is in I honestly think Snake has a huge chance considering how he faired in the ballot.

I have a feeling cloud wasn't a ballot character, at least I hope he isn't... I don't remember him being so highly demanded but whatever I will take him and try him even though I barely know him. Also doesn't he seem like he has some similar moves to Ike? I know he has some different moves but some of them are a bit similar if you look at his moves closely.

Also about Spyro, I actually would really like it if he makes it into the game, I used to play his games a lot. Although I think we are getting too many third party characters... let's get some nintendo characters please?

I don't really have any distinct views on Cloud in Smash, it's not a bad thing but I don't have the connection that lots of people have to FF7 either. I think of it as good in the form of him being another DLC character which is more than I expected before April 2015 (before the 1st April Direct, I assumed Mewtwo would be just a reward for buying both games and that would be the end for Smash content so kind of like the Casino Night Pinball DLC for Sonic Generations). I remember getting very confused with the combat system for the FF13 demos on 360 and just ignored FF from then on.

@NintyMan When the hype ends, it will be a sad, sad day...then again, they could just announce a couple of the ballot winners and save the rest for a regular Nintendo Direct, assuming some take a bit more work than others.

It could just mean that it's the last Smash-focused broadcast we'll get (we've had three so far) and any further DLC announcements would only be in regular Directs.

So... cloud won the ballot or am I missing something?

By last smash direct do they mean last smash related news or last direct solely for smash???

@TheGreatLord: I'm assuming last direct specifically for Smash. They could always announce one more thing in a regular direct. Also, what do you guys think the chances of the announcer coming back for this one are?
