I feel a lot of games can, and sometimes are, made competitive by its fanbase, even if said game was not made with them in mind. Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Pokémon (debatable), Kid Icarus; I imagine Splatoon will be the same case as well in the future. Even if a game is mostly about fun, if there's any strategy involved, its fanbase can make a competitive scene out of it.

When the main focus of a multiplayer game is winning it is competitive by nature.
Competitive gaming has its place, but I hate how most of the competitive players seem to think its the only legitimate way to play Smash. This elitist thinking is disheartening. If you like to play without items and on flat surfaces, then fine for you. But as for me, I mainly like the crazy fun of it all.
This is not true and I'm getting really sick of seeing people repeatedly state this as if it is.
Whenever there's a debate about competitive Smash, I always think about the original Smash. In that game, the physics were wonky, the characters' movesets were wonky, and the items were silly. It was all just about a few of your favorite Nintendo characters fighting it out to see who was the best fighter. People try to play that game competitively, but that has always been "casual" to me.
I think Sakurai just wants to keep the series faithful to its original charm. I like to stop, take a moment, and marvel at what happens in Smash. Mario, Nintendo's mascot, battles against Sonic, Sega's mascot and a former major rival of Mario's, along with Mega Man the blue bomber and Pac-Man, one of the most recognizable video game characters ever. In Smash, all four of these characters can fight it out, and Color TV Game 15, the Japanese version of Pong, can briefly join the battle as an assist trophy. All kinds of items from Nintendo and Namco games can be used and the stages provide even more fanservice.
What I'm trying to get at is that Smash Bros. is a game that should truly be enjoyed. I'm fine with someone playing competitively, but I personally don't wan to get bogged down in details that detract from the experience. Side smash this and chain-grab that, I just want to experience the game! Smash Bros. is a crazy game with ridiculous light-hearted, cartoon violence and a treasure trove of Nintendo fanservice. I want to have fun!

Hear hear.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
@TeeJay - I saw it on the Club Nintendo website, can't find the message anymore though... @Grumblevolcano - I noticed. Any idea why that is? Hope I can still get the CDs. I haven't registered the Wii U version yet...
