I don't believe that Wii U is likely to get another 3D Mario platformer. New 3DS on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to see a quick Super Mario Sunshine port during what I feel will be a short life.
Super Mario 3D Land is already three years old and I suspect that the handful of New 3DS exclusives will likely be drawn from the GameCube and the Wii.

I'm pretty sure it's on the Wii U. I remember reading that the devs said that they would make better use of the Gamepad.

I'm not so sure about that, I think for a true 3D Mario game, they're probably going to want to go big and use the Wii U's extra power.
Definitely, as far as i'm concerned. I have fond memories of the N64 era when 3D platformers were coming out of our ears. They just seem to have disappeared as a genre when i don't see any reason why. I wouldn't even count super mario 3d world as a proper 3d platformer really, there is no controlling of the camera or real exploration. It's like that genre "grew up" and now there are countless 3d action games on PS and XB but on wii u we seem to have retreated to 2D platformers. A new IP would be a perfect fit here .
As someone else said 3DS would be a good fit for a game like this too. I was actually disappointed at the reveal of Link Between Worlds(although did thoroughly enjoy the game) as after playing a lovely looking version of OoT why are they going back to topdown for the next handheld game? The 3DS is perfectly capable of having a fully fledged new 3D zelda now...

People are quick to forget that Sunshine was built around the GCN controller. Particularly the clicking analog triggers, which neither the Wii U nor the 3DS have.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

They can get around that by utilizing extra buttons, use R to stand and squirt and ZR to run and squirt.

Except squirting was analog. The firmer your grip was the more water you squirt.
(Wow that sounded dirty)

I don't see why it's necessary to have that, we just need those two modes.

It's not necessary, but it would (excuse the pun) water down the gameplay.

I would be okay with Super Mario Galaxy 3. Hopefully, if it is a new Mario, it's something completely new because I feel like that is what is needed (at least imo). I really love SM3W so far, just bought it recently. However I miss looking forward to new open world Mario games since the N64. Like someone before me noted, I miss the platformers on N64 and definitely miss having so many 3D platformers. Mario or not, there should be more for Wii U.
Heh, heh. Well, it's painfully obvious....ahem.....The answer is...um ...oh right.....the answer..(farts) Excuse me. The...answer... phew ....why is it getting sweaty all of a sudden. Gasp, gasp. I just...need to... just.....give.......
(faints)
Are you saying Captain Toad:Treasure Tracker should be a platforming game?
(Gasp for air) No,..No. It's not like I had to suddenly ditch the supplies from a "27 MUST-NEED things a toad needs for surviving in the wild" book in my backpack and....(not be so gosh darn scared of nearly everything) just so I can actually star in a platforming game. Furthest from my mind. hahaha....(sobs quietly in the corner)
Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Nothing of the sort has been said. You read speculation.

Hardly, there's halfway which allows you to use FLUDD while running and full power. Not difficult to envision this working on a handheld or console without analog triggers.

As far as Nintendo is concerned, I'm confident they view Super Mario 3D World as a "true" 3D Mario platformer. That the gameplay style is different from that of Super Mario 64/Super Mario Sunshine or different from that of Galaxy is irrelevant.
Wii U got its 3D Mario platformer a year ago. Much too soon to even be speculating on a successor on the same platform.

They wouldn't confirm if it was on the Wii U or 3DS, but if it's on the Wii U they said that they would make better use of the Gamepad
This is a pretty far cry from that.
"If follow-up to Super Mario 3D World is to be a Wii U game, co-director and EAD Tokyo team leader Kenta Motokura says his team “might need to make even more use of the GamePad.”"
