Topic: Should Nintendo be taking the Oculus Rift more seriously?

Oculus Rift is expected to have a consumer release sometime in 2015. There's a huge amount of hype surrounding this device and anyone who's played it seems to rave about it. Some past games and experiences have really stuck with me, playing Combat on the Atari 2600, running around in Super Mario 64, starting up Altered Beast on the Genesis, or playing Quake online for the first time. I have a feeling the Oculus will represent one of those special historic moments in gaming history.

I'm a little concerned that Nintendo seems to dismiss the importance of Oculus. How important is the upcoming VR revolution to you guys? Do you think Nintendo should take the technology more seriously? Maybe it simply doesn't matter to you. Just wanted to get some of your thoughts. Thanks.

I read the following article earlier today and I have to say it sounded pretty appealing:

What are they supposed to do about it? I don't see Nintendo making their own, and even if they did I don't see them matching the technology.

No console platform cares about Oculus Rift.

The only community that should take it seriously is the PC community. The console platforms will either produce their own VR equipment (like Sony) in due time, or let nature take its course and wait for the price to fall so it's viable for their system.

Either way the release of OR is not something Nintendo really needs to concern themselves with.

The only people who should be caring about Oculus Rift and Morpheus are PC enthusiasts and PS4 gamers. Aside from that, the GamePad and Kinect camera aren't even fully utilized as it is, so it doesn't make sense why anyone would really even move on to VR headgear, including Sony. Oculus Rift makes more sense than Morpheus, at least.

Also:
Wii Fit Board + GamePad/Wii remote+ = VR
Eye tracking, sound recognition, and movement controls via Kinect = VR

Bro pls

Calling standing on a plastic board and waving a remote around like you're on fire virtual reality is a bit misleading

Using your logic my Galaxy phone is virtual reality as well with its eye tracking and movement controls. Comparing that to Oculus Rift is an injustice and I don't even care about the thing.

It is still a form of virtual reality. I wasn't comparing as much as saying that there are other forms of VR that don't require something to be strapped to your head. Will the Oculus Rift and Morpheus make the visuals more immersive? Yes, but Nintendo and Microsoft still have motion controls and other things to also make software more immersive.

Even something as simple as gyro controls in 3DS or PS Vita with things including the AR camera stuff can be considered VR. It's all about what is going on in the software and how you interact with it,

Think about it. Oculus rift is just TV strapped to your head. Strap the Wii U GamePad to your head, have a game with gyroscoping, and tada, "virtual reality"

Virtual Reality will be the next Wii Remote from what I'm seeing, and if it catches on it could be the future standard of gaming. It's too early to tell where it will land on that spectrum, but I think it might be a little late for Nintendo to allow the Wii U to use it.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Honestly, these virtual reality shinangans look about as enticing as those roller coaster arcade machines, or those rides at theme parks with a screen in front of you, then your seat changes to "immerse" you.

If anyone has ever been to Disney Land and gotten onto the Star Tours or went to go see the Honey, I shrunk the Audience. I would consider that kind of like virtual reality. Those things were really immersive when they came out.

It mainly just sucks that these headsets are only for 1 person, and buying more than one is going to be a grip of cash. Alot of people don't even have 3D TVs or surround sound systems.

Because wearing a piece of crap on strap on your head and using keyboard + mouse and you sitting on yo' butt is totally virtual reality.

No, its a Fakebook thing. Its just there to extract all kind of information from you, like Fakebook always does. Has nothing to do with gaming, or serious gaming for that matter.

A lot more so than my galaxy potato phone or the balance board, yes.

You're discussing 2 different things. OR is purely the experience on the game output side, while Wiimotes/balance boards/whatever is the experience on the game input side. The only Wii U game I know of where there's VR feeling on the output side is the golf game in Wii U Sports Club.

Wasn't Nintendo working on something related to the Virtual Boy? Like they registered some mark or domain or something...
