Link isn't exactly known for his masculinity, and given how many times he's reincarnated over the years, wouldn't it make sense that at least one of those reincarnations was female? I know how this would pan out as is, as a cheap attempt at creating a strong female lead by gender-bending a previously male lead, but something about it just seems... right.
Edit: Included some nice pictures found by kyuubikid213. So far it seems like about 70% of you are against this idea. Some because of a stronger sense of tradition. Most because you don't want to see a male Zelda. We've discussed means of sidestepping the issue of a direct gender-bend for no reason by introducing the character as Link and Zelda's daughter, playing as Zelda herself, and even playing as Link's mom. The reasoning for this kind of change is for Nintendo, a powerful artistic force in what is potentially THE most potent medium, to challenge societal norms about gender roles, thereby directly addressing accusations of sexism present in their most popular series'.
What do you think? Would a new more feminine Link be a breath of fresh air or needless breaking of tradition?
As a character maybe, but a a lead in the main series no. I like the idea of exploring the ending of Skyward Sword, and the idea of Link's children in the games is cool, but I don't think it'd work.
I like the idea of a playable female protagonist, but I don't think she should dress like Link or be Link. I'd think it'd be cool to see a game where there are 2 playable characters, Link and Zelda. If this were to happen it could have multiplayer, and Zelda would have a more major role. It might require some adjustments to the standard Legend of Zelda game, but it could work.
And Samus should be a giant obese man with a full beard.
They certainly screwed her up enough in Other M. Samus doesn't tend to reincarnate though. It's always the same Samus in a linear storyline. Maybe if you wanted a male Samus, you could switch perspectives to a member of the Galactic Federation Army, like Anthony. Then you'd have a metroid game starring a black body builder! And no, I do not have a good ear for sarcasm...
