Uhm yeah, actually I think most people are looking at the new tracks as the meat and potatoes of the kart experience. If they happened to tap into a sub genre with the older battle modes and you enjoy it still, hey that's cool. But don't be at all surprised when Nintendo is catering to its modern fan base who enjoy graphics and such.

I wish people would stop complaining about Battle Arenas. The Battle Mode in Mario Kart Wii was absolutely terrible despite having arenas.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

You're out of your mind if you think that a traditional battle mode wouldn't be popular in Mario Kart 8.

As for "graphics and such," I'm not sure if you're being intellectually dishonest or you just misunderstood me, but just in case, I'm playing older games because they offer a mode that the new one doesn't. If the new one did offer it, I would be playing it instead and it would be in HD. It may even contain this "such" you mention, and would indeed be appealing to a modern audience.

Arena-based competitive multiplayer is extraordinarily popular. It's one of the most popular forms of gameplay in the world, actually. Nintendo themselves is getting in on it with Splatoon, so it's not like they're just pretending that the audience of this "sub genre" doesn't exist.

But it wasn't terrible because it had arenas. Correlation is not necessarily causation.

That's right. On the other hand, I personally think that the Battle Mode in MK8 is new and fresh and a lot of fun. There are no Battle Arenas, but you can play with 11 friends online and there is a lot of space for everyone.

If they do make dlc arenas, I hope they give out some for free since arenas SHOULD have been there from the start in my opinion

after giving away a few they can then charge for more :T

I don't play the battle mode, so not a problem for me. I wouldn't say they shouldn't make battle maps but I won't buy them if they do (unless they are just really good maps that make me start caring about Battle Mode lol)

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Even one battle course would be a step up from what we have now. The mode itself is really well done, we just need arenas to really engage in it.

I'd rather have more courses than battle arenas if its a case of one or the other but not both.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

What if there was another pack with only normal tracks released at the same time? Is eight new tracks and eight new battle arenas really that much worse than 16 new tracks? Especially considering it'd be DLC and completely optional?

Honestly, I really don't get what all the fuss is about. I personally really enjoy the new battle mode and now that they've added the ability to put a map on the screen, itself, they've fixed the one major gripe I had about it. Granted, some of the courses aren't well-suited to Battle Mode (Sherbet Land especially), but I see nothing wrong with not having battle arenas. They even brought back elimination and left teams as an optional mode!

Mind you, I'm not saying Arenas wouldn't be nice, I'm just saying that for what it is, I see nothing actually wrong with how they're handling Battle Mode, especially since it hasn't actually been popular since MK64.

And for the record, I really didn't enjoy Double Dash's Battle Mode at all. The arenas were cool and interesting, but for whatever reason, it just seemed less fun.

Also @CaviarMeths and @YellowTails You guys ARE aware what the word "despite" means, right? It can usually be replaced with "in spite of" which most often implies that the thing it's in spite of goes against the general effect. In this particular instance, Wii had battle arenas, but that didn't stop the Battle Mode from being generally unfun. At no point does this even remotely imply that the Battle Mode was un-fun because of arenas. It simply implies that the arenas alone won't make or break the battle mode experience, which I completely agree with.

Then look beyond your own perception of things. Is it actually difficult to understand how someone else might not enjoy the absence of arenas specifically designed for competitive play? Or are you just shrugging it off and pretending it's insignificant?

Either way, it's a narrow approach. If you enjoy MK8 battle mode as is, then that's just swell. You already have what you want. Nothing really to gain from coming into the topic and telling everyone how they're wrong.

I wouldn't think that the two DLC packs announced rules out the possibility of an additional Battle Arena pack which might not include extra characters and karts. In fact it would seem to be in keeping to hold something like that back and then spring it on us.

I agree that simply using the regular tracks isn't good enough for battle mode. Some of them have wider areas like Moo Moo Meadows or Sherbert-whatever, but you can race around places like Toad's Turnpike forever and I don't find it that easy to turn around in some of these things. Arenas would be a nice addition from past games in the series.
